The “built like a tank” phrase used to describe how durable, tough and safe some road vehicles (usually Benzes) are needs to be retired. It doesn’t make sense if you think about it. My neighbours were tank mechanics in the army in the 80s who were taught by two generations of tank mechanics, and they always laughed of how all tanks (current and past) are pretty much coddled by their crews so they won’t let you down by breaking down. They had to be attentive to Oil & filter changes every 150 miles, constant engjne and transmission and alignment maintenance , endless cleaning of its interior and engine bay, and tuneups of its weapons systems. And they were cumbersome to drive and drank fuel as if the liquid was plentiful and was flowing in a stream by the side of the road for the tank crew to scoop litres from. An appropriate term would be “Built Benz Tough” or something else like that.

The GLs are really nice if you can do some of the repairs since the parts are reasonable. I have a 2008 GL550 and every time I took it to the dealer the estimate was between $2,500 and $4,000 to fix the issue. I started to do all the work several years ago and I'm almost up to 150,000 miles now. The ride, the power, the stereo, the space is really nice and it still looks great for an 08.

Since my GL I have become a very proficient Mercedes mechanic. Any dealer level work (Larchmont NY) did under warranty I have had to go back and do over now that it's out of warranty. Plastic trim = $hit. Rear bags, intake manifold (got a code and any bolt intake related was loose including the TBI). Striped skid plate bolts. Runs like a raped ape for such a big vehicle. Still love it though.

Bought an 07 GL320 for my wife (at the time) a few years ago. I own a mechanic shop and it immediately needed a transfer case and a pair or arnott front struts. She loved it and it drove great (167k at purchase). She hits me with a divorce not soon after, and wants to keep the Benz I bought her. Fine, whatever. In a years time, she takes it to another euro shop and drops 10 thousand bucks on it! The ac compressor gave out and she got a $4K Estimate and called me up. She was throwing in the towel and wanted to dump it. I gave her 2,500. A $500 compressor kit later and I have a truck for the most part I love driving. Has 250ish K miles on it and needs the engine dropped and resealed, but that’s not hard for me. I want to make it into an overland type rig when I get some spare time. 10/10 would not recommend one for an average person.

Try to look at the fuel lines coming from and too the fuel filter, over time they get cooked and have tiny cracks that spray fuel like that. Just put the ignition in on position and don't start the engine and after a few seconds you will see the lines from the tank inflated from the pressure the pump is building. Just repeat on - lock ignition with a 30sec delay in lock position to bulid enough pressure to spot the leak. But don't start the engine and leave it to idle if u got fuel on the exhaust and dpf because if unlucky it decides it needs a regeneration, even in idle it will bring exhaust gas temperature between 250-500°C and in hot days even 800 degrees witch may ignite fuel and oil or even dry grass ! . Lot's of good luck and health I wish u guys from România!

They are pretty bulletproof cars actually, OM642 is used in all the Sprinter Dodge and Mercedes Vans you see driving around delivering stuff. There are a few problematic areas but timing chains are definitely not common, same applies to transfer case (the fix is new case at around 3-7grand or an $80 Borg chain to fix stretched old ones due to massive torque they output). I have had to rebuild my turbo and did so for $160 as a DIY job. So in other words worst Mercedes for Hoovie, best/easiest one for the Wizard :) I own an ML320 CDI same year as this GL but with regular suspension. It is a true workhorse and continues to work like a fine piece of german engineering! 200K miles later. I will run that car into the ground or 1 million miles whichever comes first! Sidenote Hoovie if you decide to keep, add the Brabus D6 (III) package! For the little money you can get a used one for, you will then have 272 hp and 440 trq :D

Bought an '07 ML63 AMG (W164) with 58K miles for $24K. The car had lived an easy life in Newport Beach and was very clean. Thought I was getting a good deal at the time. Of course...not even 1500 miles later the dashboard lights lit up like a Christmas tree and the gears were slipping. What I learned was the transmission life for the AMGs is a lot shorter than on the ML350's (I had an '09 model too) due to the far higher HP & torque. $19K dealer estimate to replace the transmission was heartbreaking. After a good deal of searching I was able to get it rebuilt for $6500 plus a 3 year warranty via private mechanic. Since then the only other issue has been front right air suspension replacement for $1K. It hasn't been cheap, but I've taken it on multiple family trips well over 1K mile roundtrip each & it's become a beloved family SUV that my son will soon inherit.

No problems for 2 years until transmission needed a rebuild. Upgraded GTB 2260 turbo, EGR delete oil cooler o-ring replacement, DPF delete, tune and it's pretty reliable since. Now I know to look elsewhere.

Average 30 mi per gallon on the highway. Tows just about anything I want to put behind it. In about 20,000 mi I'm going to have the timing chain replaced just for general maintenance. Well, I had the diesel GL on my list of used suvs I am researching. Your comments on a S class suv are right as the materials and fit/finish are better that the other in the same price point. This tends to help understand why I think, but can help wondering about the whether they were taken advantage on the 6 suspension repairs, etc. This is the CDI version, so was wondering if the bluetec versions fixed some issues or is it guilty by association? Filling the DEF is not a detrimental issue, it is a simple supplemental requirement that need it to meet emissions. All DEF equipped diesel will shut down if driven dry I believe. The put the bluetec in a few years of S class (S350), and they were $90k...so are they also disasters waiting to happen. Feels like a future KZread opportunity!?

my dad bought 2 gl450's. one was a standard and one was a 4matic. he wanted to fix them and sell them. he started with the standard and made a cool 12 grand. but the 4matic was apparently sitting somewhere where water could've gotten in the computers, so its literally hell on wheels. the shift stick on the side of the steering wheel sometimes turns on the windshield wipers. if you cut the wheel a bit too much to the right, one or both of the rear windows go down. the air suspension is constantly on, and doesn't relax. the lights on the dash go in and out, its leaking oil, it has a issue with the air fuel mixture, the horn doesn't work, the headlights decide when to turn on, the tpm is constantly lying, the tailgate doesn't close,, and I'm just starting. but it is a wonderful truck when it works.

I had the 2013 ML 350 Bluetec. Drives great when it runs and decent milage but it rather sits at dealer shop floor. Within a 6 month period at under 60,000 miles this CPA Mercedes needed new bluetec emmissions system $5,500 at dealer, new engine mounts $350 at local shop, replace o-ring seal to leaking oil cooler $2800 (the o-ring is only 3 bucks) at a local shop and then new intake manifold as the freaking plastic rods for the intakes deform from heat. I totally agree with you that the Mercedes CDI/Bluetec diesel engines are the worst cars to own. What a sad replacement for the dependability of past Mercedes diesel cars.

A number of years ago my mother was looking at buying a gl500 or a Landcruiser. The Mercedes we saw was 5 years old and was falling apart inside, the airvents fell out off their holders, some of the compartments couldn't shut anymore, the leather looked like it'd endured the arse of millions and the interior trim fell off. It drove and rode very well though (Not as smooth and the Landcruiser, but close).
