Why the F-14 Tomcat Is Such a Badass Plane

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The f-14 tomcat jet- The f 14 tomcat, however, chalked up its extraordinary combat record in the service of one of the United States’ bitterest rivals, Iran. In this episode, we are going to talk about the story of F-14 Tomcat. Is Tomcat really retired? and why everyone still love it?
The F-14 Tomcat was the US Navy’s carrier-based two-seat air defence, intercept, strike and reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft was developed by Northrop Grumman to replace the F-4 Phantom fighter and entered service with the US Navy in 1972.

Tomcat vg and wing design especially gave him a unique and "variable" behaviour during dogfight. A primary factor that allowing tomcats to beat eagles in several occasions. Their phoenix missiles are powerful weapons. It shame that us navy regulation to do visual identification before they got a "clear to engage" order, thus rendering phoenix unuseable. Lots of pilot definitely feared phoenix missiles as they wouldn't be able to see one coming their way at mach5, whenever they engages the tomcat. They no longer need original ordnance and Grumman spares to keep their big cats in the air with sharp claws, they design and manifacture their own, in their national aviation industries facility. At its lowest the IRIAF is said to have had about a dozen Cats still flying, but that number has been increasing over the last decade. The last report I read on this matter mentioned over twenty airworthy (which, I know, is not necessarily the same as combat ready) IRIAF F-14 A's, the goal being the forty reza is talking about. The airframes are solid, since they (unlike the USN F-14's) never took the beating of numerous catapult take-offs and arrested landings on carriers which they were designed to sustain, as the IRIAF only flies them from landbased aerodromes with regular tarmac or concrete runways. If they would somehow manage to upgrade the systems and software to modern standards, possibly with help from Russia or China, they're set for at least another decade, maybe even longer. They don't need to be able to bud heads with 5th gen. Western fighter planes, they just have to be able to keep the airforces of their neighboring countries sufficiently respectfull of their capabilities.

I was on the last aircraft carrier that the f-14 that did deployment on which was my first deployment. When I say from the maintenance standpoint I was happy to see that thing go. I was in avionics we had a cable that was I want to say about 100 to 150 ft long that we had to work on. And all the components on it was so old I would look at tech manuals that were 20 to 30 years older than me. But as far as capabilities and just badassness it was one of a kind. And I really feel fortunate to be able to work on it.

Many times I would be as close as 75 ft from a tomcat powering up its engines getting ready for a take off the feeling of the power you could feel it through your body it was awesome. I was about 21. The pilots would give me a thumbs up never got tired of it. I got to watch the tomcat test fire it’s gun very cool. I still live close to Grumman and I miss the sound of those cats overhead.

Every few years I check back in to see if by some miracle or chance Grumman has convinced us to bring it back in a modern form. I know it will never happen, but I will love and think about this jet for the rest of my life. The F-14D Tomcat's were Beautiful, Potent, and Lethal aircraft. They, unto themselves, made a lot of people consider Joining-up just to be Associated with the Tomcat squadron's. And if you've EVER seen one fly, Especially at any airshow's, you simply couldn't take your eyes off of them........They were, BAR-NONE, Extraordinarily Beautiful when Flying!! The pilots always seemed to know what the folks at the Air Show's wanted to see: Afterburner's brightly lit, Swing-wing's moving WHILE the Aircraft's flying, Very High-Speed passes, (and Wonderously LOUD!!). Just a REAL, GENUINE American Engineering MARVEL.........And it's ALL OUR'S!!! Pure American. You just can't beat that. P.S. Just a little footnote: The Tomcats had an all-titanium wingbox designed specifically to handle the stresses incurred with their swing-wing design........as compared to the General Dynamics F-111's all steel wingbox which was much heavier and weaker than the Tomcats' wingbox.

I was an airframe mechanic in the United States navy in the 1980s and my bird was the F-14A and later the f-14 + , (with toughwing mod) and I was good at my job. This is not a boast, it's a demonstrable fact. So I say that for context in which to make this comment. The F-14A, A + and D are/were the best flat out fighter still to this day. By "flat out" I mean that the were the fastest at sustained speeds and their size and speed really didn't harm maneuverability much at all. As a missile platform, nothing rivaled their capacity and they made a fair reconnaissance platform. Their 20mm Vulcan was capable of devastating firepower. BUT.... They were a maintenance nightmare! As a pioneering airplane it used a lot of very new technology, like composite materials and fly by wire technology. They were a mass of static hydraulic leaks. When birds were put into a hanger, you automatically put pans under the aft ends of the nacelles, under the ventral fins. The flap/slat and wing surface control system was hugely problematic when flying ACM (the toughwing mod really helped solve those problems) and the wingsweep system used a pneumatic airbag to seal the bottom surface of the wing to the fuselage and we spent a good deal of time repairing and replacing those. All that being said, when everything worked, when it was up and up and FMC, it was a bird to make your heart swell with pride. Although I always thought it resembled a large, grey roach when it was taxiing, (now anyone from my old unit who is reading this knows who I am), in the air, it was magnificent to watch the wing sweep and the wing surface controls constantly making automatic adjustments while cruising at altitude. The FA-18 is a great airplane but it is no replacement for the F-14. I'm 63 now and 30 years out of the Navy but I still miss the job sometimes. The Navy? Not so much.
