A lot of cloud companies use the airport code for their data centers. Like SYD2, SYD7, IAD1, IAD9, or LON3-6. Funny story: a group of four data centers in Dallas are on the same property, but not the same building. So when you want a DC tech to go change out 50 failed drives, you gotta check which building it's in, and if it's not the one with the parts crib, and it's raining, they have to get a truck to move them. Can't use the golf cart which is what they normally used to get between buildings.

There is also the Denver International Airport, DIA. Of course, there's no confusion because the airport code for DIA is DEN.

Yeah but DCA and IAD are like 10 mins away from each other but Denver is on the whole other side of the country

The Denver International Airport didn’t open until 1995, decades after Dulles’s code changed to IAD.

DEN was the code for Stapleton International Airport in Denver. In 1995 the new Airport was designated DIA. DEN is not the code for Denver International. DIA is.

It was also code for Dead In Air, so changing the letters just made sense

IAD still makes sense because it stands for International Airport Dulles. And DCA stands for District of Columbia Airport.

id think the reverse made sense. ADC makes more sense specially when spelled out.

Of course, people kept making so many mistakes that after the code was changed, the *name* of the place was changed. Here in the DMV we all refer to IAD as just "Dulles," but so many tourists & travelers (especially from overseas) couldn't tell the difference between "Dulles" and "Dallas" -- especially when the names are spoken -- the official name is "WASHINGTON Dulles International Airport."

Up until hipsters thought renaming DC metro area as DMV was cool, it stood for Dept of Motor Vehicles to us Washingtonians.

I used to prefer Dulles over Reagan but as traffic got hellacious, I would only go if the price was worth it. Now they have a metro line going to Dulles so I may start flying into Dulles again as it was usually slightly cheaper than Reagan.

Doesn’t United have 2 terminals to themselves? The C and D terminals are all United I’m pretty sure

I was standing in line at DCA and overheard the ticket lady telling a couple that the were at the wrong airport. They were supposed to be at IAD. I thought to myself "what a sucker, they're st the wrong airport". Then I went up to the counter and the same lady told me I'm at the wrong airport. Now I'm the sucker!

Dulles airport is not in Washington DC. The airport is approximately 30 miles away from Washington DC . It is in Virginia, so really the airport could be called. VIA ~ Virginia international airport.

Actually it was due to air traffic controllers making NUMEROUS mistakes routing aircraft into the DC Metro arriving into DIA now IAD (International Airport Dulles) and DCA (Reagan)

IAH Intercontinental Airport Houston!

This happens in Cincinnati too - Cincinnati Airport is a tiny little GA airfield in the middle of nowhere. Meanwhile, Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport is one of the largest airports in the country, ,but isn't actually in Cincinnati, so people in Cincinnati just go to the nearest airport and end up in the wrong place.

I drove limos for a while. She came in to LaGuardia Airport so she assumed she was leaving from there. Her travel agent didn't plan it that way. Fortunately the porter at LaGuardia picked up the mistake. There's a myth that one can drive from LaGuardia to JFK in ten minutes. On a normal day it's impossible to do in under 45 minutes. The stars were in alignment and there was no traffic on a Sunday morning. I actually got her there in ten minutes. So ... Check and double check your tickets and ask questions!

Ironies of all ironies is both Dulles (IAD) and Reagan National (DCA) are located in Virginia. Thurgood Marshall BWI near Baltimore is actually the ideal airport in the region.

Mixups happen in Houston all the time with IAH(Bush Intercontinental Airport) and Hobby(HOU).

Interesting. Especially since DCA, or Reagan National Airport, only goes a certain amount of miles and only in the USA. Dulles flies everywhere in the Americas and Europe. Also, it's well over an hour drive in the afternoon from Reagan to Dulles if you mess up.

They are pretty close to each other, so I guess worse comes to worse, if you did show up to the airport early you can make it to the other place with an Uber in about 30 minutes...

Uh.... I've been booked to change planes arriving in Dulles and connecting flight out of Reagan.... Gotta read those bookings when they're made.... discovering that on the way to the airport or arriving in Dulles would've been a bad scene

A large number of Europeans buy tickets to Dallas instead of Dulles or vice versa. I thought that it must be a rare occurrence until I met someone who had done it.

The real reason is probably not to use a triple letter agencies designated abbreviation.

I do, they can't use "N" as that means NAVY for the first letter... NEWARK uses the E W and R is all...

I am one of those travelers that showed up at the wrong airport. Mistakes happen.

Orlando International Airport used to be McCoy Air Force Base before being converted to commercial use. They just never changed the code from its military days. McCoy - MCO.

At least it wasn't DOA or DIAF.

It depends on where you are going in the DC area. If you are going to DC itself it is closer. But I go to Bethesda, MD and find Dulles easier to get to.
