@@Makabert.Abylon No, you didn’t, lol. There’s a reason why life expectancy was low in preindustrial times: factors such as famine, plague, casual disregard of human life, and limitless warfare caused downward pressure on your ability to you know, survive. Imagine if the above comment had said this: “Life expectancy in revolutionary Russia was only 30, but this is mostly due to infant mortality. If you lived through all the famine, plague, and civil warfare, then you had a great chance of living to 70!” If they had said this then we would rightfully all call it ridiculous. Not only that, but what is this logic of, “it’s only infant mortality!” Like, you were an infant at one point. You would have had the same chances of living as all those infants who died. So, that is to say, you likely would have dropped dead like a fly on the wall in those times, just like all those other infants.

As the demand for labour is now low, poor people have very little to bargain with against the people in power. Combine that with the mind control the rich&powerful now have through things like tiktok, instagram, facebook, youtube, etc; an organised rebellion is becoming pretty much impossible. Maybe we're heading towards an even darker dark ages again.

He was full of bizarre theories like that, some of which are famously found in his book Jurassic Park, State of Fear, and others. Iow there is no evidence whatsoever that humans were less prone to such conditions as near-sightedness in earlier times; they just didn't have the means to treat them nor were inclined to report such matters among ordinary people like they do now. "The peasants were often in the middle of a rich mans fight back then". How is it any different today? Lol I like how he emphasizes 'back then' like we wouldn't know that he was talking about the dark ages, as if to divert away from the obvious reality that a lot, if not most wars are still like that today. This absolutely includes U.S. wars. We still have immoral knights in different forms who are protected by power and the more vulnerable people in the society still suffer because of them. Absolutely naive and avoiding reality to think we have evolved past that completely

As someone whose focus was medieval European history, I certainly hope no one actually thinks this is 100% accurate. Because it's absolutely NOT. So many myths in here! I kept cringing and wanting to leap into the comments section, until I realized there were SO MANY inaccuracies that I'd be writing a 3-page essay debunking all the misinformation, and no one would ever read it. It'd be only to my own vanity, "Someone on the internet was WRONG but I corrected them, pat on the back to me!" I will just say, the most iconic myth of the middle ages that grates on me is "people didn't live as long." The truth is, if you lived to see your 20th birthday, you could expect to lived to see your 70th birthday. Living into your 80s was not unheard of. Saint Hildegard von Bingen lived to be 81. The "average lifespan was 30 years" myth is based on a misunderstanding of basic statistics. If you have a population where 100 people are born in a single year, and 50 die before the age of 20 due to childhood illnesses, injuries, brawling, being drafted to fight in a war, or childbirth, then some armchair scholar might say, "Aha, the average age expectancy was 30 years!" Technically right, because so many died before the age of 5 due to common childhood diseases. But then someone creates a video like this and says "People DIED VERY YOUNG in the medieval times, most people died before they were 30." It would be more accurate to say "Most people died before they were 5" but they that confuses everyone. It leads to people believing that medieval peasants must have married at 12 and began to have kids in their teens. Nobles did that to secure bloodlines and treaties, but the average age of marriage for a peasant was in their 20s. After all, you want to make sure your spouse can survive past puberty, and people back then knew that teen pregnancies were dangerous to the mother. Childbirth deaths were high enough WITHOUT starting at an unhealthily early age. Don't get me started into the myths about a peasant's diet. They ate healthier than you or I do. It could even be argued that their diet was more healthy than that of nobles. "They ate rye bread full of seeds and nuts." Dude, we call that "artisan bread" now and it's $7 a loaf at the bougie grocery store, as opposed to $1 unhealthy processed white bread, the bread of the upper class.

They were dark ages because of the Muslim invasion taking place. Stealing land, technologies and resources. Commercial routes that were safe at Roman times, became pirate swamps. So commerce became less on Christian lands. Words and good intentions only work for those who are willing to listen and act on good faith. Reason is that good intentions and words do not work for Muslims of Jews is that once you are convinced that you are chosen by god you believe yourself to be above the rest. Thus every possible evil becomes justified in your mind. Relative morality is the excuse for the weak minded and the immoral. If your morality is relative, then you have no morals. When Christians had enough they joined forces and went all Deus Vult on the Muslims and Jews. With some success and some failures. Mostly success, as Christians not only survived but thrived. At least until atheism settled in. And people started worshiping money as their god.

Quick little rant adding on to what was already said about vikings. There is a some evidence that some raiding groups would not raise and slaughter villages. Most of them wanted gold, and would take the quickest path of least resistance to take it. If locals didn't attempt to fight back the vikings would often pay them no mind. Besides, why destroy a village when you can let it recover and raid it again later. Additionally, taking slaves weren't usually done on gold raids, this being because the raiders might not have had enough room on their ships nor food and blankets for slaves. Typically when slaves were taken it was through raids specifically planned for that purpose. Also it is likely that serfs/peasants who lived in towns had halfway decent lives. Obviously they'd eat the less refined foods but when you live in a place where goods were constantly flowing through and centralizing then you have better access to said goods.

The reason people call it the "dark ages", is the lack of written records (since most of the germanic tribes who moved in after the Romans left Western Europe were mostly illiterate, and most of the sources that do survive were written down long after the fact) and scarcity of archeology from the period. So really it's the period of time that we're mostly "in the dark" about.

Danish heritage ended up as part of Yorkshire DNA. My paternal grandfather was a Yorkshireman, so I have Dane in my ancestor. When Wiliam the Conqueror took over England, he attacked the Danes of North Eastern England, it is known as The Harrowing Of The North. There are rules in Magna Carta about fishing rights on rivers and streams, because fish were eaten on a Friday, as a religious duty. The knights who went on the Crusades killed anyone and everyone, Muslims, Jews and Christians. Some showed viciousness that would not be seen again until Hitler's elite soldiers during the Second World War. They believed that all the people in the Holy Land were their enemies. They were very cruel. Interesting fact, the Doomsday Book Wembley the town in London, that now has the English National Stadium, is mentioned as Wemba's Lea, which means the fields of a Saxon Lord called Wemba. Harrow a town nearby now famous for its public school is mentioned as church land belonging to an abbey. Today there is a late mediaeval church in the public school's grounds. That Arabic translation was done by Jewish translators. Life expectancy in medieval Europe was lower than it was at the height of the Roman empire, having collapsed along with that empire. It wasn't until after the Industrial Revolution, that life expectancy increased again. That's a rough life.

This period of time hasn't been called the Dark ages in about 50 years or so. There's the low middle ages and the high middle ages. When you start with a title that's not accurate it doesn't really provide any sense that the content is going to be anymore accurate than that.

I'm glad someone else has noticed this, most of the stuff covered is from the Middle ages, not the dark ages! The channel is American and it shows, they think anything older than 1776 is prehistoric.

If you want to belittle someone because of their nationality, at least be more worldly and use the right identifier. America is the American Continent. I’d have taken North American but it’s the United States that you’re referring to. Unless you think that this English speaking channel could be ran by a Spanish speaking Columbian?

@@Mordant.Melodysin British English the terms 'America' and 'American' refer specifically to the United States and people from the United States, respectively. If I wanted to refer to people from other North American or indeed South American countries I would have named the individual countries.

The historical inaccuracies in this video are too many to count. Historians don’t use the term ‘dark ages’ and they are only considered such because there are not a lot of primary sources for research. But a few of the things we do know are that much of the clothing you show is not medieval. The plaque doctor is a 17th century costume. The life expectancy is skewed by infant mortality so those who did live past childhood lived into their 60s. Anyway, you have a lot of subscribers so people obviously enjoy your content, it would be great if you consulted historians for the information.

If you wish to nit pick do it correctly. The average age of mortality minus children was 55 years old, however we should include child mortality as its not insignificant data. Modern Scholars tend not to use the term dark ages but many still do, it was also prevalant in 19th and 20th century etomology so does apply modern scholars and historians do still use the term such as Robert Sallares and others. Its a cartoon i would not expect it to be accurate depictions as far as clothing. Ease up and chill if you dont like the content just dont watch it.

I disagree with the statement at 4:25, about unprecedented access to services for mental health in our modern era. It is a silent epidemic of our time. Any "services" available are only for those who can afford to pay; and too often are only about pumping people full of drugs to keep them quiet. If "services" were available in the middle ages, they certainly would have been out of reach of peasants and serfs. Don't look too closely, you might notice that not a great deal has changed.
