Why The Book of Boba Fett Failed

Ойын-сауық

We have finally condensed our thoughts and opinions about the Book of Boba Fett into one final video!
The Book of Boba Fett is a disappointing chapter in the life of one of the most beloved Star Wars characters of all time---a show that suffers from fundamentally bad writing and a distinct lack of focus. In typical Disney fashion, the show is unable to commit to the grittier, darker themes inherent in its initial premise of being Star Wars' first Crime Drama. As a result, the Boba we get is only a shadow of his former self, a character devoid of personality as Disney tries its hardest to make him into a run-of-the-mill good guy instead of leaning into his ruthless past depictions.

That's a classic symptom of Disney star wars. Big and flashy but with no creativity. I mean even think about some of the character design and names of planets in the sequel trilogy. They just don't feel like Star Wars names and locations. It's like certain types of Modern art or somebody just throws some paint and gasoline on a chunk of concrete sets it on fire then sells it for a million dollars

@@RabidNemo People love Mando, and that was all Disney StarWars. Lets be real about the issues here. Its not "corpos" (jesus, that word sounds childish). The problem was Robert Rodriguez. He's a shit writer and director by all objective standards. The people who think the director is always right and the producers are always evil dont understand anything about the filmmaking process. Not having a plan (once again) was the problem with Disney's execution of this show. Sequels? No planned throughline. Solo? Unplanned reshoots and multiple director changes. What happens when they DO get their "corpo" fingers into the pie? Rogue One and Mando. Kathleen Kennedy is arguably THE most decorated producer in Hollywood history, yet she/disney/writers/directors horribly botched the sequels by not having a set plan and setting boundaries for the creatives to create....and then made one of biggest TV shows of all time (Mando)..because of planning and not giving TOO much freedom to the creatives.

In regards to the Hutt Twins. I think it really sums up the entire show. They come in, are built up to be a major part of the show, and then just vanish abruptly. When I first watched this show, I thought it was OBVIOUS that the Hutt Twins were laying a trap for Boba because otherwise their actions would make no sense. I kept waiting for them to come back...but it never happened. They're only in the show to give Boba a Rancor in order to have a riding scene at the end. Because it's fan service. Jabba had a Rancor, so must Boba. That's it. They're just a tool really, not an actual character.

To add in more to Boba's rather strange background before this show, Boba has had a long list of cancelled projects that would have made him the main lead or a major role. To explain his rather comical death in RoTJ, Star Wars back then was originally planned to be a 12 movie saga, but Lucas lost motivation as a result of his divorce and the films being rather expensive to make so he made RoTJ the last movie in the OT. Boba was originally going to be the main villain with Jabba as the secondary villain of the 3rd film. Because of the shift plans, Boba was killed off quickly just to jump to the Death Star II battle. After learning of his popularity, Lucas gained a strange fondness for Boba and attempted to capitalize on said popularity by trying to make a solo film with him. But as you can guess, it got delayed many times and eventually cancelled. In the Prequel era of Star Wars, Lucas was trying to make a Star Wars tv show known as Underworld and it was initially rumored that Boba would have been one of the main characters to explore the Underworld of the Star Wars universe. To add more to it, the cancelled 1313 game was originally going to reveal that the main character was Boba and serve as some advertisement for the Underworld show. Both projects were cancelled as a result of the Disney buyout. Disney also attempted to make their own Boba movie like the Anthology style like Rogue One and Solo, but as a result of Solo bombing in the box office, once again Boba's movie was cancelled after many delays with shifts in directors. So to see Boba FINALLY getting the main lead role in his show and to be so mediocre and a different direction for the character that didn't even make any sense was a big slap to the face of Boba fans after many of his projects getting cancelled like that.

Also about Boba's mercy, he also acts merciless AFTER the sand people. When he arrives in the Mandalorian (not the other way around), he holds a bantha stick, meaning this takes place after his walkabout with the sand people. In this scene he is just as boba-esque as he is in the og trilogy, literally shattering stormtroopers. So yeah, he's merciful before he's supposed to become merciful, and he's merciless after he's supposed to stop being merciless.

Great point. I agree, his characterization in Mando S2 is weirdly a lot more in line with his movie persona despite being mere days (?) before the start of this show. He is far more aggressive and deadly. To add to your example, when he meets Bo Kattan and she insults his father's legacy he immediately threatens her with violence and proceeds to fight her sidekick Koska. Hell, even his voice in this scene sounds way more menacing than anything in BoBF.

Totally agree! Disney has this sort of ability, at least with me, where upon initially watching on the surface its enjoyable and you walk away thinking "oh that was a solid episode" while quietly noticing flaws and problems that don't bubble to the surface and become apparent until you reach the conclusion of the show and think "that was it?". It's hard to describe, but feels like I'm being duped for daring to be excited for a new star wars experience. It's when I watch videos like these where the dots I've subconsciously accumulated and one's I hadn't even noticed all connect and I see just how mediocre it all was and how poorly everything was executed. It bums me out to see stuff that could have been a really cool idea on paper get kneecapped by bad writing and bad execution. Unrelated but, I love your dual narration. it's a neat style I haven't seen much of before. I think having these larger video essays where you both participate is really cool because you both get an opportunity to voice your precise thoughts on a whole season or film. A bit of constructive criticism, I think the way you tag team these videos could be a bit more smooth. The key to making videos like this work is to have good synergy and compliment each other's roles neatly which I believe you're both capable of given the excellent quality of the video and editing displayed here. I also saw a comment talking about meme use, I kind of agree. I'd say you can definitely work memes and jokes into the fray it just need to be more smoothly and with more finesse. gotta make the humor fit more naturally and work to serve the script a bit better. Don't give up on humor just refine it, it adds a good layer to the video experience. Also this is the last and most subjective point, but don't be afraid to rag on Disney for the more egregious things, they are a billion dollar company with practically unlimited resources so I think it's fair to be a bit harder on them sometimes. ultimately you guys did a wonderful job and it'll be great to watch you grow, the fact you're already debuting with this level of quality is awesome and the future looks bright.

I think the main problem with the series is that Disney tried to throw the old Boba Fett out the window and replace him with someting new. From The Mandalorian I can only suspect that they really didn´t want a bad guy in the main role so they invented a copy. When that didn´t work they tried this... My main point is that there was a prefectly good story to build from. In short: After the battle of Endor Han and Leia return to Tatooine in order to solve Han´s financial problems. Soon they enounter jawas and a captured Fett who suffers from memory loss after the Sarlac inicident. Although the end of the story is disappointing, we see a Fett who is much more in character and (when he does remember who Han is) clearly is out for revenge.

Someone already said it but there is too much corporate control. That's going to be the problem with Star Wars for as long as Disney owns the property. They gave Boba's character to Din Djarin while calling him an original character while a ruthless bounty hunter is neutered. Mando while "good" is overrated, the first season was arguably more creative than season 2 which was a member berries springboard season.

@@77SBCR yes, and at 1 point James Cameron's Avatar had the number one box office, or still does. Does that make the movie groundbreaking or good? Not really it was a mediocre film that relied upon spectacle and novelty to make its money, and Eternals, and Black Widow hit number 1 as well? Are we chalking that up to merit or because of the few actual new movies in theatres due to Covid restrictions? I'm sorry man, WandaVision really wasnt that good, nor were any of the tv shows, did a terrible job of trying to make the viewer sympathize with the villain(Wanda). Loki was alright, but I was expecting Loki and Mobius TV show. Not the "Sylvie" show. It's fine if you like bad content, people like The Room. Also I thought you were talking about respecting the source material? What's this about badass females? I have no problems with badass females, there were a couple in the original LoTR movies. You're sounding like you're trying to project things onto me to strawman some sort of argument I never made. I am also referring to the casting of Tilda Swinton in Doctor Strange, great actress, but it was done to appeal to China, and then also making characters gay or bisexual, or race swapping characters even though it is not canonical to the source material. I never cared for Rey because her extreme levels of power clashes with what we know about the light side of the force, that It requires years of discipline and training. I don't like what they did with Finn because because they made a brainwashed child soldier defector into comic relief when he could have easily been one of the most interesting characters in the series. Why are you making arguments against me that I never argued or rebutted for in the first place? Am I misunderstanding something here?

I actually enjoyed the first 2 episodes a lot; thought it was an interesting subversion of the character, and his early decisions (outside of not killing the dog) could be explained as self preservation, then undergoes actual change through his time with the raiders. However, once that plot line was dropped the quality fell off a cliff and never recovered (not counting mandalorian season 2.5). If they had stuck with just explaining how Boba became the man he was in the Mandalorian, and relegated his gang wars to B plots for future Mando episodes, it would have been a stronger show for it (or, at least, a much more focused show).

I also get them wanting to use the actor who played Jango previously to be Boba... But the guy is in the 60s I believe and it's unlikely they could have had him do a lot of physical scenes. They could have put a stuntman/younger actor under the helmet for action scenes; maybe that would have worked better. But I think the narrator is correcting saying that this show had no idea what it wanted to be. I'm also certain that there was a lot of studio interference and parts... Just has that feel. On its own and not comparing it to the mandalorian I thought it was okay as a show but not really worthy of being Boba Fett's show. Same basic script with a new character maybe that would have worked better? Still need a lot of tightening of the script and characters given more to do but I think overall it wouldn't bother us all so much if they hadn't used a known established character

This was rather well done. The switching of the narrator was an interessting idea, the script was decent too and the visual editing wasn´t bad either. But it feels like this is two different videos with two different ideas stitched together. The beginning was leaning heavily on memes and references, while the second half was a lot more leaning in the more traditional video essay direction. The one thing i actualy disliked was the looping background music. It didn´t realy fit the tone you were probably going for and it was distracting at times. All in all a solid video, espacially for such a young chanel. I will stick around to see where this is going.

Thank you for taking the time to share some constructive criticism. Funnily enough some of the things you mentioned are things we agonized over when making the video as well. For example, we also weren't sure about the dual narration, but we had been watching the show together and this was our first "big" project, so it felt right that both of us should take part in this particular video. That being said we are aware that it's definitely not the norm, and some future videos will only be narrated by one of us, depending on the show/topic (e.g., we have a video coming up early next week about House of the Dragon which Ax narrates alone). And the music is something we debated for a while---I spent a whole day trying different songs and even no songs (ultimately we agreed that our voices just sounded better with at least some bg music, but we definitely understand how it could be distracting for some, because at times we felt that too). All of this is to say: we're still experimenting with what feels right, so feedback like this is genuinely appreciated. The point about front loading the memes is definitely something we hadn't considered.

@@mattmurphy7030 It has been a journey figuring out which format works. For the actual individual episode reviews (if you look at our Boba playlist you can find all of them), that is exactly what we do, just have a coversation discussing our thoughts on the most recent episode. The issue is that given the timing constraints, and the fact that we both have pretty busy non-youtube jobs, they aren't at all as polished as this was. And, for what it's worth, they did not get a lot of views. We are still trying to figure out what the next steps are, but our current plan (subject to change) is to keep putting out these longer more polished video essays every couple of months, continue with the individual episode reviews for the shows we really care about (so, likely Kenobi, LotR, and House of the Dragon at the moment), and then do a few smaller one-off review and exaplantory videos in between. The next month or so until Kenobi comes out should be pretty busy for us. Ax is going to be spearheading some character primers for House of the Dragon to get people caught up on the lore before the series comes out, and YungDeegs has a couple other series he is watching for which he plans to produce some content around shortly as well. Regardless, all suggestions and feedback welcome, excited to see what new directions are in store for the channel.

Yeah; when I was watching the show, I kept trying to find a way to explain how it could have worked, even though I knew that this wasn't working. My reasoning was "If I take the character that I saw in the Clone Wars, age him up to the ruthless bounty hunter we see in the show, and then look at the Sarlaac Pit as the lowest point of his life after the death of his father (because of his connection to his father's armor, feeling like a failure for being beaten so badly and being robbed by the jawas), then I can see the starting point that this character is coming from and how everything after that is a change." I personally think a scene of Boba breaking down after he got out of the Sarlaac Pit but before the Tuskens found him would have provided a decent status quo to start the character from to justify how he acts later. By the Mando episodes, I was furious and stopped making excuses. Leaving out an emotional scene after the Sarlaac Pit wasn't just an oversight in my opinion, it was disrespectful of this character. Because the show acts at the end like Boba Fett went through this massive character arc, but they a) never established what he changed from, b) it's not clear in the show what made him change, they just spit out a few half assed excuses that don't add up with what we've seen, and c) the show had gone out of their way to not focus on this character for half of it's run time, and now all of a sudden we're supposed to think they put effort into making this great character study? I was more angry with this tv show than I was in Rise of Skywalker; that's how manipulative and lazy it felt to me. And I didn't even care about Boba Fett before this

With that said, there were still plenty of quality episodes in our opinion, such as S1E6 The Prisoner, S2E7 The Believer, and S2E8 The Rescue. I and most people I know thought it was far from perfect, but that it was worth watching otherwise and that it's probably going to be part of the live actions characters and intrigues that they're creating. It wasn't perfect, but it still was more fun watching it than watching most TV Series as far as I'm concerned (I'm not huge on marvel, and Star Wars is pretty much one of the few more "space and/or fantastic and/or super power stuff" franchise that I enjoy watching.). I've read a lot of comments saying that it somehow ruined the character of Boba Fett, but I couldn't disagree more. We never knew much about canon Boba, and there's still plenty of room for stories about Boba being a ruthless cold blooded killing machine before Episode 6......Expecting a guy to survive the Sarlac pit and not come out of it a different man would have been a weird artistic choice IMO. An entire series about Boba just being mysterious and nodding his head would have been boring IMHO (he could still do that in series precedes Episode 6, he just wouldn't be the center of attention 100% of the time.) They made his transformation from lonely revengeful badass almost unbeatable warrior/bounty hunter/killer by having him being captured by the sandpeople, being sick and to their mercy......proving his worth, become part of the clan, having the lizard experience (looked like the Sand people's interpretation of the force/the way it has a place in their own specific culture.).....and then Boba got overconfident and got his whole clan except for the warrior, killed (and seemed particularly depressed about that Tusken kid). That's enough events for turning Boba into an evolving character without erasing opportunities to be the bad ass bounty hunter he was in plenty of other projects.........and it's not like Boba's going around giving his rivals flowers and money.....He still is has some pretty badass abilities. I'm confident that he'll show up again in other shows.......could be very interesting if somehow Windu and Fett face each other........I'm not certain an older wiser Boba would kill him if it happens after TBOBF.......if it happens before Episode 6? He most likely is going to try..........Heck, maybe Mace is going to give him advices before getting killed and these advices are what will give him the strength to survive the Sarlac + Tusken.....I just hope that they will do it well. No matter what direction they chose for their character, I just want them to make sense and be well explained. (Luke briefly wanting to kill Ben in between Ep 6 and TFA doesn't make sense with the character, and I'm not sure how they expected us to accept that the guy who wanted to save Vader at all price because there was still good in him, was unable to see that Kylo could be saved and focus on that instead of entertaining the idea of just murdering him.......Just an example of a character evolution that wasn't well handed (It's going to take some seriously good writing to retroactively make this one have some sort of sense.)

Wrote this a while ago on another video... I’ve been saying this since the third episode. Fett is a bounty hunter, the entire definition is that he kills or hunts people for money, his work principle is literally “cash > life”. He is *NOT* a noble character. As a crime boss, he should be an Al Capone type figure, collecting protection money, enlisting killers, fighting gang wars and killing all in his way. What did we get? 30% _The Last of the Mohicans,_ 40% "I'm gonna clean up this town”, and 30% _The Mandalorian. _ The beginning should have been him escaping the Tuskens, not befriending them. The Tuskens aren’t good guys either. They try to get us to feel bad when they’re massacred, but they literally enslaved Boba at the beginning before beating him and depriving him of water. They’re bad creatures, by default. I see it like this: He could somehow free himself as they sleep (what's he even staked into? It's all sand!), use his chain to strangle the watchdogs and any guards, quietly steal some clothing and supplies, hop on a Bantha and ride off into the night, he'll be miles away before they even wake up, anywhere's better than waiting around for them to kill him. Such a scenario has been done before, in _A Fistful of Dollars_ (1965). Clint's in an even worse state than Boba is in the flashbacks, and through his smarts, he manages to kill two guys and sneak out unnoticed. kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3-Kq9WEXam_eLg.html

Very well said. What's frustrating is that the skeleton of a good story is there, it just never really gets to be built upon. The whole Tusken plot (despite providing an occasionally cool scene now and then) is just really out of place in the show. Clearly one (or more) of the scriptwriters were huge fans of Last of the Mohicans / Dances with Wolves and struggled to shoehorn the themes from those films into a show that really wasn't able to do them any justice. Even if you accept that the Tuskens were good (which, agreed, is a hard pill to swallow), they basically are just fridged in order to provide a plot-motivation for Boba that neither he nor the show needed. Just poor writing all around. And don't get us started again on the failure of the crime boss/mafia elements of the show... too disappointing.

@@certainpointofreview I tell you, even with all the horse pucky we've been served up lately, I'd still kill to see a series (with an all-new creative team) about Boba's early days in the bounty hunting profession, with Daniel Logan (Young Boba from _Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clone_ (2002)) back in the role. He's in his mid-thirties now, but he still looks youthful enough. Still, he's not getting any younger and we should jump on this before it's too late. That was one of the mistakes they made with Temuera. Sure it's great to see him back, especially when you know he's been wanting this since 2002, but this should have been done ten to fifteen years ago, not when he's 60. Daniel still makes costume appearances as well, and it only makes me want to see him as Young Boba more, because he absolutely kills it. facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=428056275345283&set=pb.100044227429607.-2207520000..&type=3

What was the name of that trio of boba Fett books? The bounty hunter wars? I loved that post RotJ story. I think boba acted more like the mandolorian in that book than he did in the streaming series. Very quiet and reserved but always had a plan and was one step ahead of everyone.

Simple: they had one episode of dreadfully written material they stretched out to 6 episodes & 2 of them didn’t even include boba. Disney writes things based on points they feel they need, not on the characters ie. “we need a portal, a cgi battle, a plane getting eaten by an alien, 20 snarky jokes, etc.” Book of boba rarely had moments that werent blatantly idiotic. The most famous bounty hunter in the galaxy who pilots Slave 1 climbs out of a sarlac pit & suddenly is anti-violence & pro Tuscan raider? A crime lord who commits no crimes? A man who never removed his helmet but not never wears it? A galaxy renown killer who gets beat up constantly by random tatoine guards? A confident cold assassin who suddenly is a weak, pushover coward who needs a girl to pull his nuts back down? A smart & cunning killer is suddenly a bumbling Homer Simpson in space getting duped & bewildered by everyone he meets? Trains still exist to rob? Everything about the story is dumb. Even practically - he climbed out of the pit with his armor on, why would he go back to look for it in the pit & do some stupid face-first maneuver to find it? Real boba would have killed all the Tuscans, tracked the Jawas who took the amor, killed all of them & burned their ship, & continued to track & kill everyone on his way to finding his armor so he can go get vengeance on Han Solo & Luke Skywalker for his embarrassing demise.

I rly love ahsoka as a character and am so excited for her show, but if it’s just going to be another book of boba fett, then I wish they would have killed her off in rebels season 2 in her battle with Vader. Disney needs to show why ahsoka is worth making a show about and focus on interesting writing and not just nostalgia or bad character development.

Boba Fest should never have had his own series. He is an antagonist, not the protagonist. As popular as he is (he's one of my favourites, if not favourite, SW character) he should be used sparingly and defiantly remain mysterious. He should have been the main for supporting protagonist for the Mandalorian season 2 onwards, if anything.

I don't agree with that. Because Boba has worked as a protagonist (Anti-hero) in the Expanded Universe. Look up things like Boba Fett: Twin Engines of Destruction or the Boba Fett Blood Ties or Boba Fett is Dead comics. Or any of the older novels (Even if they are outdated by the prequels). Those are more compelling stories for the character than whatever the hell Book of Boba Fett is supposed to be. The problem put plainly is the absolutely horrible writing in this show, it feels so limp wristed and Boba is hardly the same character, like he needs someone to tell him what to do? In the old canon, Boba was crafty enough to out wit 5 Bounty Hunters and still deliver Han to Jabba. On his own. WHERE WAS THAT CHARACTER?

You're certainly not wrong on some of the problems with BOBF but overall I still (mostly) enjoyed it. A few tweeks here & there, Episode 5 & 6 transferred to Mandalorian where they belong, making 10 1+ hour long episodes, showing Boba, Mando, & Fennec giving the mod scooter gang battle tactics & firearms training, & showing Danny Trejo & Boba & the Rancor training together would have helped tremendously in my opinion.

21:00 While I agree that Boba didn’t have much of a character in the original trilogy, he was a character. Boba Fett’s reputation in the galaxy is the Respectable and Legendary Bounty Hunter. Judging Boba from behavior (for this examination, I will look at his development in the films and not any third-party media: games, books, shows, or comics), Boba displayed aspects of bravery, respect, moral ambiguity, stoicism, intelligence, skill, and seriousness. Boba first appears as Jabba’s (a great crime-lord) bodyguard (building his reputation as respectable), then is hired by the Empire to aid in the chase of Luke Skywalker (showing his skill), and in all cases, is shown to be a formidable obstacle to our heroes. Even when Darth Vader (a man who is known for his intolerance of failure) alters their deal, Boba - to his face - demands compensation from Vader and is granted his request. Boba is neither good nor bad, as he works with whoever can afford him (in contrast with the show’s representation of him, and I’m not buying into the Sarlacc psychological change of his morality). There is even subtle characterization when Boba flirts with one of the cantina girls in Episode VI. The Book of Boba Fett had much information to work with when developing Boba’s character (especially when including third-party media) but missed the mark. Imagine how interesting a morally ambiguous crime-lord or bounty hunter show would have been.

To be honest his character in this show just confused me, he was trying to be the stern boba but would also awkwardly crack jokes at bad timing and it would take a second to even realize that he’s making a joke. It just didn’t know what it wanted to be. He just changed to a wise old man out of nowhere, it was odd. It was also weird that he just decided he wanted to be a mayor or whatever to a town he didn’t even come from. Like why

  • @hk1371

The thing is that you can have a character that is mostly serious have a few jokes here and there. Take John Marston in RDR1. He has 2 decent jokes that don't ruin his character or seriousness. The first one is when he scares the professor he is protecting, saying he'll hand the man over and "watch them tear (him) limb from limb" only to say he's joking and then deliver a plan. The joke was for his own amusement rather than a Marvel "Laugh now" moment. The other is in Undead Nightmare where he tries to calm a woman down who is worried he will hurt her at the start of the zombie apocalypse. He says "I don't bite", playing on the usual way to reassure someone, only to chastise himself for the misplaced humor. These jokes don't take anything away from Marston's intimidation or seriousness but add a little to his viewpoint and works well with his character, to the point we laugh with him or his own identified mistake. But the ones you mention with Boba feel like we are laughing at him rather than with him.

It might be because I'm not a diehard know-it-all star wars fan but I genuinely liked this series as a filler between season 2 and 3 of the mandalorian, and I think that's what it's purpose was. Give some backstory to how Boba Fett survived and why he's back, then tease at season 3 of the mandalorian. No, I don't think it warrants a second season since it's simply be dragging things on for no reason.
