I've done it and it's freaky, but it's definitely "fake" if you define fake as an optical illusion. My face melted into something like Emperor Palpatine from Star Wars. Just a slight movement of my eyes broke the illusion immediately.

thats just a setup for your brain to get spooked by itself. mirrors are not smth "natural" since if you or the surroundings dont move nothing will (unlike for example a reflection in water". It takes kids a few good years to even get a grasp of the fact that their seeing themselves and some dogs will even try to attack their reflection in a mirror, its just hard for the mind and even more so the subconcious parts to perceive the properties of it. And while youre learning your brain is altering anyways and if youve been going for too long it will be exhausted and some of the barriers protecting your "sanity" if you will, are losened and thus it will start projecting like crazy.

I believe mirrors do indeed show more things than the human eye can detect alone, all light is reflected regardless of what spectrum they are in and perhaps the mirror acts as a "filter". I wish more research would be done but not much funding goes into it. I've dabbled with LSD and looked in mirror for a few, as long as you keep your logical thought process you will do fine.

This was a big thing in my elementary school, especially when I was 8-9... Everyone was talking about scary rumors about what they saw and whatnot and I haven't seen a horror movie since :)

You guys should try this at different distances. One of my favorite variations was standing about 5 feet away from a full body mirror. I started to dissolve into the background, and it made me look like a transparent ghost.

Now I won't be happy until a Candyman vs Bloody Mary movie comes out

this is something my relatives and I would do on long car rides at night. We would stare at each other in the dark and describe what we thought we were seeing then make up a story about that “person” to pass time. We never made up any scary stories and I honestly think it was before any of us even knew about Bloody Mary, but it’s interesting how much your state of mind affects it!

Just tried this on snap chat cause I was in bed so didn’t want to get up to a mirror. Just as it started to work I got a notification so the screen lit up, making my the reflection of me get much brighter. Nearly had a heart attack lol

When I first heard Jason say "Shambling mound of road kill" I started to laugh, but then I realized he might be thinking about an actual experience he had... idk how to feel about this or if I'm overthinking it.

There was this one Nightattack podcast where Jason and Brian were talking about a roadtrip they were on where they witnessed this one dude get run over by an SUV. His legs turned to mush, blood everywhere, he was in a ton of pain, and his dog was licking at the blood. Jason tried to calm everyone down and call 911, and apparently it was an awful experience

I think this disconnect thing has happened to me before without me trying. Like I’ll be lost in thought inadvertently staring in the mirror and it will be like I’m seeing myself for the first time or like it isn’t me or something weird like that. I’m probably a spooky environment and a late night away from actually experiencing the Bloody Mary aspect of the event

I used to scare myself when I was little by making a face at myself in the mirror and just staring at myself until my brain didn't register it as me anymore. Moving my head didn't help. As long as I kept my eyes locked on my reflection's, and I'd stopped noticing my muscles making that face, it was like I had no idea who was looking back at me.

I've got this weird self-made semi-superstition against looking in the mirror if I have to run to the bathroom in the middle of the night. No clue when exactly it started, but between having dim lights and being half asleep and probably having watched or read or even written something spooky before bed, my brain probably has a solid basis for telling me to stare at the counter lest shit get weird...

Disconnect happens all the time if I stare my reflection in the eye in the mirror, and it is *deeply* unsettling. I avoid mirrors.

It says something about the human mind's ability to trick itself that I still felt afraid while I was watching this even though there was never going to be any visual sign of it happening. Edit: 1 year later, Jason's conception of Bloody Mary as a vaguely humanoid mass of ragged flesh and blood-matted hair is still terrifying as a mental image and deserves to be realized in an actual horror film.

So, onw common tool in many magickal paths is a "Speculum," aka, a Black Mirror (yes, the show is based on that, but in that case screens). The silvered back is replaced with Obsidian as a way to recreate the effect of using a mirror in darkness, thought to be a gateway to other worlds. Ancient magic practitioners would gaze into the black mirror and begin to see things that weren't there (known as Scrying). It also worked with reflective crystal balls and black bowls of water. What's most interesting though is how it is used in Goetia, aka ceremonial daemon summoning. Through the long drawn rituals described In the Key of Solomon, a small group of 2 or 3 would "summon a daemon" through the Speculum. One person would be assigned to gaze into it while they all call the daemon to come forth, until the scryer suddenly felt its presence and took on the role. Now, I think that what is happening in that moment is exactly what's happening in this bloody Mary experiment. The scryer feels that they have become replaced with something else, and the hypnotic nature of the ritual further cements that. I feel like ancient magick was merely "mechanized psychology," and the reason it even worked is that no other explanation was given. Hell, even when explained, it probably still works.

When they blew out the candles I was kind of expecting a jump scare.

yo i tried this myself and holy shit that was an adventure. i used a rather large mirror and a lamp i usually keep in my room. I'm rather fidgety/trembly so getting results was hard as i literally could not stop my eyes from focusing, they just kept snapping me back to reality the longer i would stare at myself (i was staring at like the mid point between your eyes and above your nose . it took a solid few mins im not sure it was prob a long time, but after many position changes and a while of just staring at myself i started to see things, blue like auras kept forming around me, then as i kept trying certain facial features would fade, first my eyes then my mouth, these features would turn to a fleshy tone then to black. Then i started to stare into my own eye, i would stare into my right eye, this is when results would happen more frequently and drastically. It would feel like parts of my face were now a part of the mirror, coming forward as i had been messing with a 3DS, and it would be in its own plane some how, a complete feeling that, that was not my face. It would look more dead, aged, tired, soulless. It was pretty freaky but overall a pretty rad experience.

It's interesting you talk about the mirror and the dead. About seven years ago a great uncle of mine died. Here in Ireland we have wakes, and this was the first night of the wake. The body was in the room with a mirror. I had come around again the next day to find the mirror covered. Upon asking why, my great aunt (the deceased's sister) told me they had to cover the mirror. It transpires that the night before, some time after the guests had all left, a couple of my great-aunts were sitting in the living room chatting when they heard a loud cracking sound followed by glass breaking. They ran into the room with the body to find the mirror had cracked and broken in places. It being rural Ireland, they immediately covered the mirror, saying they should have done to begin with. I guess the old superstitions are fading a bit. I have no idea what caused it, but I've often hypothesised it might have had something to do with rapid expansion and cooling. There were a lot of people in the house - particularly that room - all day. Their body heat may have caused the temperature to raise more than normal. Still, I'm just guessing really.
