I’m probably sure most people don’t know how trade-makes work. As far as I know a trade make only applies to 1 particular Contacts. So Apple can be trademarked by Apple for all things tech but an Apple grower can still call there Apples Apples. And the Olympics can treatment 2012, 2016 or 2020 in the Contacts of a Global sporting event but a calendar maker can still put the year on their calendar. I’m sure there are exceptions and other technicality’s but having a trade mark on something doesn’t mean anyone else can’t use it. Also trade marks only apply as longed they are enforced by the trademark holder. So there’s that too.

I am usually the kind of person who calls things by exact name like iPhone, iPad, etc but I still say iwatch instead of Apple Watch.

This is somehow reminding me of how Apple had to brand their "AirPort" products as "AirMac" products in Japan. In Mac OS 10.8, they dropped the name for built-in Wi-Fi interfaces, likely to follow iOS, and was to me, a welcome change.

I’m pretty sure this has been answered in your older videos about Apple’s naming strategies.

I think in addition to that explanation there is a shift going on at Apple & their naming strategy - away from i-product names altogether. When they started the i branding it stood for internet-capabailites, which isn't sth special nowadays. In order to set the companie free from this i-branding they started to transform the naming of products to a variety of branding-prefixes: apple card, apple watch, homepod, airpod, airpower etc. I don't think that there will never be a "new" product line with the i-prefex ever again (in my opinion they should even consider re-naming existing product lines to bring more order and logic to their product naming)

Hey, Apple TV was formally revealed as iTV - although, if I remember right they pointed out it was a placeholder name until it’s actual market release.

Remember when everyone called the iPod Touch an "iTouch"?

You don’t look at it enough to call it, “iWatch” Perhaps when they make an actual Television, “iWatch”

I knew back in the day that Apple was going to have problems with using the "i" as there were countless generic products out there that started putting the "i" in front of everything. Though I do think the iWatch and iTV names sound dumb. I had heard someone already had the icloud domain, and sold it to Apple for millions of dollars. And back in the day, I had thought of trying to buy "i" domains in anticipation of future Apple products and services. But then I abandoned that idea when it was apparent that Apple were going to stop putting the "i" in front of everything.

As a brit i immediately thought about ITV. It isnt a small company at all, its the largest independent broadcasting company in the country, and has had that name since the 1950s. No amount of money would make them let go of that trademark.

ITV in the UK has existed as a name since the 1950s and stands for Independent TeleVision. Originally I used by the ITA (Independent Television Authority) as a generic term for their individual franchise companies when the UK had only two television channels which were labelled ITV and BBC on sets. I remember our first television set had a single rotary switch with two positions.

The reason that it was not named “iWatch” is because Apple didn’t want people to be cautious about the watch, because it sounds very eerie. iWatch kinda seems like it would mean “I watch you.”

Additionally, this has been a constant issue with most other Apple products that start with “i”…in which they had to either pay or settle in court with whoever owned whatever name. Basically, Apple got tired of all those legal problems that would result in the company losing a lot of money…so they’re opting for options they already own (but still sound good).

also pretty common that additional gear is called apple XYZ, like the watch was an extention to iphone, so appel watch, trackpad an extension of imac, so apple trackpad etc

Here in Brazil were I live we also have an iPhone made by another Brazilian company called Gradiente. And this name came before Apple iPhone released

There's a computer for restaurants that is just a tiny box that generates a display taken from the point of sale system and presents simple row of buttons to do things like complete the current item; it's called "IPAD" and has been around for decades. It appears to still be sold under that name.

Funfact: iOS was trademark from Cisco to. It was the OS on the Cisco Networkdevices like Firewalls and Switches

Back in 2000, my IT services BU used iWatch as part of our services to customers up and down the whole East Coast, probably predating all those trademarks.
