I think the question should be 'why are mechanical watches generally round?'. The hands rotate around a central axis which dictates a round shape. On a digital watch with a display for content, it's the display which dictates the shape and that is a rectangle.

It makes sense from an aesthetic look. It already is going to be difficult to match Apple Watch functionality. Maybe it makes most sense to go with the aesthetic separator. Apple's complete control of the vertical integration is arguably paying off most with the Watch. It answers why even Samsung and Google related tech sites talk of 'why can't they make a really good Apple Watch competitor'. It isn't because they don't have good people/engineering and they are not trying, it is that Apple's singular control of the ecosystem. Top functionality for a Watch relies on the smartphone. iPhone-AppleWatch currently has a built in vertical integration advantage that will be tough to beat for the foreseeable future.

@@gr8dvd ik the answer to some of these questions the iPhone has a 12 mp camera because more than 12 wouldn’t necessarily be usable as software would struggle to harness all that the sensor captures for example look at the Samsung galaxy s20 ultra it had over 120 mega pixels but people found when you took pictures it would simplify that 120 down to 12 megapixels infact the later Samsungs downgraded the megapixels of the sensor as 120 was simply impossible to harness at the time. As for the 2015 to 2017 MacBook failing that would be a result of them departing from what made the MacBook THE MacBook they got rid of ports making versatility harder added scissor keys which we all know how that ended up and focused on making it thin and more aesthetically pleasing instead of making it functional at the same time. And apple before Steve Jobs return or after they kicked him out was failing they struggled to make products consumers could connect to and they overall weren’t as dominant and as innovative as they use to be until they bought “next” computers and repositioned Steve.

This. The example shown in this video from a google watch was just a poor example. Moving the button elements to be around the edge in a curving motion would free up a lot of space and purhaps allow a message to be even bigger than what is possible on the square display as the width of a circular watch can be wider than a rectangular display on a watch. I think Apple just did a rectangular display to develop a distinctive look, not because of its design benefit. A functional circular display is 100% possible. Id look at my garmin fenix 6s I wear and argue it makes very good use of its circular design. Even if thats a bit of a apple to oranges example.

I recently got samsung watch as I wanted round watch and I have android phone, I decided to create an app. The problem is the cordinate system used in all these frameworks are cartesian but for circular device what you need is a mix of both cartesian as well as polar coordinates system. Well, you can't have both so there will be lot of calculation based on the safe area available for various widgets so the RECT usually used in ui frameworks will be needed to replaced with more general Polygon and it introduces a lof of complications. Hence square watch. I have my round watch even though apps need to be specifically written for exact size.

I think it also has to do with user profiles. It is probably the case that Apple users view their smartwatches as extensions of their iPhones - so yes, for Apple users, it makes a lot of sense to have a square-shaped smartwatch. But I struggle to say the same about a Garmin user or even about a FitBit user. Those people want a WATCH (in a form factor that resembles what they see as a regular watch), but with features that make it smart. Personally, I find it very weird to read and send texts on my watch - I use my smartwatch (a Huawei, BTW) to track my sleep, my heart rate, my SpO2 and other health metrics. That is what I want out of it, not to use it as an extension of my phone (an S22 Ultra - I also have the Galaxy Watch 4, but the battery life is poor).

@@rick_terscale1111 Then why do people want a circular smartwatch? It’s a digital computer on your wrist with a digital screen which makes no sense for it to be circular. It’s called a watch because you wear it on your wrist. And by the way some traditional analog watches are also square in design.

Agreed!! Apple should test the market. Produce a round faced Apple Watch for a couple of years and see how the sales go. I mean they chopped and changed the design of the iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle numerous times in the past, so it shouldnt be an issue for Apple to do the same with Apple Watch, to try out a round watch face. If sales are good then they can continue with it. If sales are bad then they can cancel it. The video states that Apple has 29% of the market. But a serious company, a trillion dollar company, should be setting their goals high and aiming for say 60% of the market. And if they want that 60% share of the market then they should be able to reach that target simply by creating a watch that those who prefer round watch faces want. Apple have all that money yet they're not willing to trying something different???? Whatever happened to "think different"? Now they are "think same!". All their devices are now sqaured up, rectangular, boxy devices. From the forthcoming MacBook Air to the current iPhone to the AirPods Max to the iMac and Apple TV..... all boxes.

the others companies that use round design usually implement a bigger screen size just to be able to fit the same info that Apple watch. So more points to Apple for actually knowing how to use the space in a smart way.

Other manufacturers tried to carry on a traditional watch's form, which only does one function, telling the time. The way the mechanics and so on work, its got to be a circle. The Apple Watch is a piece of tech, it doesn't need to use geometry and math to turn gears to show the time, it needs to show digital information. Said information has only ever been efficiently conveyed through square or rectangular displays.

The big issue stems from trying to cram smartphone UI into a watch, and that’s why smart watches haven’t really taken off. Just like how PDAs were trying to cram a PC UI into a pocket device until the iPhone reinvented the UI for smart phones. Smart watches need to completely reimagine their design philosophy and I think improving AI assistants are the key to that.

It's kinda obvious. Who buys an iPod these days. Everyone is buying smartphones and iPhones. Some people use music via their Apple Watch and other smart watches. Many people are streaming music content these days, therefore no need to have a device that stores music. The times have changed. The technology has changed. The times have changed because the technology has changed.

In my case I don’t really care about the extra things, all I want for a watch is to tell the time, sleep tracking and a timer (or an exercise app that does this), so I can skip Apple products like the Watch. I just watched this after the Pixel watch teaser that Google presented in its IO conference. The bezels were extremely fat and the Apple watch looked very nice compared to that. With Series 7, they have made the watch look better with more smooth and curves edges. So people rumor the Apple Watch 8 to be more boxy like the iPhone and have flat edges. That would really suck.

The Apple Watch is not square it’s actually more rectangular. I believe the future designs will incorporate a wider screen thus increasing useable surface area by logically following a perpendicular expansion of the arm. In fact, it won’t be long before the actual watch strap will become “smart” because that’s just more surface area not being used

The only disjointed aspect ratio is the circular icons on a squircle display. The circular icons would look wayvbetter on a circular display but they rolled with it probably indicating a last minute change... I mean the idea of a squarer display is to fit more content in that space so using a square-ish display and rounded icons is kinda counter productive. I just think it would work better if they refreshed the watch OS to look more in line with their hardware design language.
