Adobe Flash is a multimedia technology that powered some of the most iconic websites in the internet’s early days like Newgrounds and Homestarrunner. It allowed content to be viewable whether you were on Mac, PC, or Linux, and it became so popular that almost every website had some form of Flash technology. But today, the internet looks a lot different. Flash has gone extinct, and Apple had a lot to do with its demise. So in this video, I’m going to explain the history of Flash, and how Apple accelerated its fall.

    I actually appreciate content creator to create a little smooth transition or introduction to their sponsor. However, there should be segregation of the sponsor message and his actual video content. The sponsor message here is way too smooth, I didn't catch on to it without listening fairly carefully. I'd rather change it to something like: "This has allowed services like SquareSpace to create web sites optimized for multiple platforms while being easy enough to create for non-developer. SquareSpace, our sponsor of this video, is a " instead.

  • @taylorbroad8941

    @taylorbroad8941

    @@leojei Yes. The thing is, you need clear separation from content to sponsor. Here unfortunately there was no clear separation between the sponsor read and the script until you got into the clearly defined talking points present in EVERY SS ad read. If you're not careful about this stuff, you get into FTC rules violation territory.

    @@evm6177 I really wish these "how Apple killed Flash" videos would cover the "originally written" language Apple tried to sneak into the App Store developer agreement. Jobs was so afraid of Flash app exports that he was willing to ban *all* third-party development tools - no Unity, no Unreal Engine, etc - just so Adobe's product would suffer. People wonder why Epic is being so belligerent in their lawsuits today; this is why. Apple almost banned their game engine technology a few months before they were going to launch it. I can absolutely concur that Adobe killed Flash though. Remember the whole "premium features" shitfest? For those who don't remember, they tried to get *existing Flash users* to pay for the ability to cross-compile other software to Flash Player, by locking down certain combinations of features (e.g. Domain Memory and Stage3D) behind a revenue share agreement. It's the kind of move that made a lot of financial sense to Adobe's accountants and *nobody else*, and it almost certainly scared the remaining few Flash holdouts. It was "Leave the platform now or become part of Adobe's pocketbook".

  • @HNedel

    @@SuperSmashDolls the only reason epic is so belligerent is that they don’t want to pay the 30% tax. That’s it. Games using unity and unreal engine were available on the app store long before epic launched fortnite or started their lawsuit.

    A good portion of photo, video, and digital creatives are on the platform so Adobe can't just give up on MacOS. They had to get over it. Even through the whole flash ordeal they tightened their relationship with apple from like 2015ish. When MacOS moved to 64bit, adobe was one of the highlighted case studies for rewriting mac apps for launch. Same thing with the Metal, the touch bar, and now Apple silicon processors.

    Former Flash Product Manager here. You actually did a remarkably good job on this. There’s very little that I would argue. I would have included that HTML5 became what it is largely _because_ of Flash. Also, the way we enjoy video on the internet today is largely due to Flash. I also think your characterization of Adobe’s “attack” on Apple was exaggerated. They were actually less aggressive than many of us wanted them to be. In any case, well done!

This all apps and games could have been entirely free accessible in browsers... as if the dev's wouldn't adapt and start create games which would have nice ux for mobile users.. what a shame. I bet things would have turned out different had Flash remained with Macromedia still in business, they had more capable technical team hands down. 🍷Selling Flash to Adobe was a make or break deal, guess they broke it finally ! I used to be a Flash animator / content developer.. Got laid off watching the technology world change around me after HTML 5 & CSS took over after the advent of iphone / iPad. 🤓 Whats truly sad is the rich interactive content that websites & presentations had with slick intro animations will never come back. The whole flash legacy experience was Retro scale incredible in keeping the users hooked on the site.. anything felt possible back then with flash.

    I used Flash almost exclusively, I loved its creative platform which so many designers and developers used to create absolutely stunning works of art. That exactly what many of the websites were: they were works of art, with incredible, programmed interactions. Nothing since has come close. Apple not only killed Flash, it also enabled a website world that looks boringly the same, site template after site template, same unimaginative boxes of content placed in different locations. What a loss!

    Another item of note: in that “Thoughts on Flash” letter you showed, Steve Jobs says that Flash player was the number one cause of crashes on the Mac, which is definitely an overstatement. That said, Flash was slow and buggy on a Mac, but the reason was that Apple, for very understandable security reasons, had decided to restrict hardware access for programs like Flash Player. The restrictions were so severe that Adobe had to implement some hacky workarounds in order for their player to run with any kind of smoothness, which led to the instability of the player. Also important to know, this was just one facet of the bitterness between Adobe and Apple. For years the Apple and Adobe pair was legendary: Apple provided the hardware and OS, and Adobe provided the creativity software. Adobe, noticing how more users were choosing Windows platforms over Macs and knowing they could get more optimised performance and hardware access on PCs, decided to focus their efforts on the Windows versions of their software, which seemed like a bit of a betrayal to Apple. Also, Apple’s Final Cut Pro was invented by Macromedia just three years before Adobe acquired Macromedia, but it couldn’t be released because of licensing issues; Apple acquired the code and the development team and released it as their own, competing product to Adobe Premiere Pro, using staff and software that would’ve been Adobe’s if the timing had been different. So really, the issue is more complex the more you dig into it.

    Its not rly a shame on them, its how it has to be. If adobe didnt want to take the time to complete redo it or make flash open source, it should be killed. Html 5 is completely open source and a million times easier to develop for. In my opinion its apple’s product and if they chose not to include it because of security reasons that adobe refused to address, then thats fine by me. Adobe is clearly at fault here, they were too closed minded to see that what they were doing wasnt going to push the industry forward, apple made the decision to back html as it had way more potential and would allow for wayyyy more development on the platform.
