Why The Apple Watch Has A Red Flashlight

Ғылым және технология

If you’ve ever tried using the flashlight on your Apple Watch, you may’ve come across this red screen. Apple has never mentioned why they included it, but it does serve a useful purpose. And that’s what you'll find out in this video.

The flashlight I use (Zebralight SC600FC mkiv Plus) has a 0.15 and a 4 lumen mode that is extremely handy for stage work, and is super floody to help the actors see. When outdoors though, it can run all the way up to 1800 lumens, which exceeds the light output of vehicle halogen bulbs.

The idea actually originated from the military, red light interferes with the night vision headsets but at the same time. Red light is also good for search parties at night so each member of the search can work without interrupting each other. And a less common use for the red light found on military flashlights is to not give away a group position especially to their adversaries who may also be using night vision.

"When you're in Theater Mode it defaults to the red flashlight" This is the kind of attention to detail that I love about Apple. Like, when you close all tabs in Safari, a new tab with your bookmarks opens up automatically. Yet in Google Chrome, if you close all tabs it just sits an empty app, forcing you to open a new tab yourself, which is obviously the only thing you can do, so why not make it automatic? Not so intuitive. And just one example.

I have been using the red light (from RGB bulb) in my room for a very long time, because normal light (white or warm) just tires my eyes, never thought there's so much science to it. And while it does not tire my eyes it also let me have clear views to every surrounding.

I spend a lot of time in dark places and although I don't have the Apple watch feel like it is a feature I would use a lot. I can get around pretty well in the dark and would certainly appreciate a less obtrusive and vision preserving feature such at the red light. I doubt it was for darkroom photography though, I wouldn't trust the red to be "clean" enough not to affect my prints. Certainly for night photography, however.

I can confirm that what he says is the same thing that an Apple employee at Apple Store Venice was saying to one customer (I was listening the conversation between the two while watching the products). At that time I was impressed by his explanation I thought it was his personal interpretation but still very smart and it made sense; seeing this video now let me think that is the official reason of that function and that was the official version of Apple about the red flashlight (maybe the employee was educated by Apple in some class). Didn’t know that the red flashlight was linked to the Theater mode though I noticed that sometimes it would popup red instead of white but I thought it was because it use the last flashlight you have used... nice to know it’s linked to theater mode instead! Nice video!

I bet it has a lot to do with how much power it draws to run that bright whit light too. The watch battery is so small to begin with. I know reducing screen brightness on my iPad or iPhone can more than double its run time once it hits low-power more and I start to pay attention to it.

I knew about red light preserving your night vision already, I came here because I couldn’t figure out why my watch defaults to red when I turn my flashlight on. But I keep my watch on theater mode 24/7 and didn’t realize that makes the flashlight switch to red. So thank you, I also learned a lot of other things from your video. You definitely earned another subscriber

Would the red light really be of service to a photographer in the dark room? I though it had to be a specific colour of red in the dark room and also any light entering could cause issues with the undeveloped negatives. For any film photographer out there, how practical is this for the dark room?
