8 Reasons I Stopped Wearing a Smart Watch

Ғылым және технология

In this video I share 8 reasons why I stopped wearing an Apple Watch after wearing them religiously for 4 years. I am not trying to downplay the benefits people may get from smart watches, I’m not trying to talk people out of wearing smart watches, I’m just sharing my journey with watches.

I wholeheartedly agree with Reason 7, being the short life. I owned/wore an Apple Watch Series 5 for years, until the battery started to crap out and barely got a day of use before having to recharge it. I initially preordered the Series 9 until I had a reality check and decided that spending $400 every 3 years on an item that does the same functions as my phone (which I carry with me everywhere) is a poor decision financially. For that reason, I purchased a Timex Expedition Scout for $50 at Target and haven’t looked back. I appreciate not being connected all of the time. The watch does everything I need it to do, and I can display some of my personality. One of the best financial/tech decisions I’ve made in recent years.

All the reasons you gave were actually true. I live in india...so we can get a smart watch from 2000 to 40000 rupees. There is hardly any difference between the two from a distance. Why do we have to complicate every aspect of our life? All of us are already addicted to our phones..why add to it! The reasons about privacy, phantom buzz, charging and updates...all make sense!

I guess it depends on your wants vs your needs. I don't like taking out my $1k smartphone on a jobsite, where there's a good chance of it dropping or getting damaged in some way. It's in a rugged case but looking at the watch is just easier. Also, "the find my phone" feature saved me multiple times. My watch is really just a tool, like my drill. As far as emotional connection, I grew up watching James Bond and Dick Tracy talk and watch TV through a spy watch. I can do that now, which I think is cool. I own a regular mechanical watch, that I wear after work or when going out.

Regarding the phantom buzzing I had the same issue but with my phone... I'd get a phantom buzz on my upper-left thigh where the phone would normally lay in the jeans pocket. I found that beyond bizarre and I turned off vibrations overall. I really do think there's something to our body being condition by the tech around us and our body does adapt and expect that stimulus... or entirely fabricates it, it seems, hence the phantom buzzing.

I have owned a number of smart watches and most of them have been a pain in the backside. The touch-screens are sensitive to wet weather or sweat and will often start selecting unwanted functions on their own. And remembering to charge the dam things! I've gone back to an analogue watch for now, but what I'm really after is an attractive, stylish digital watch WITHOUT smart features. And I'd prefer one that doesn't look like it came from planet Zog and isn't two inches across.

Another good reason: Is it a good idea to be obsessed with your health metrics. This can be anxiety inducing and when you are alerted to an issue you spend all day worrying about it and there is no guarantee that the information will be accurate. Just use an ordinary watch to tell the time and use your phone for everything else.

I loved this video!! I got a samsung frontier s3 and loved it for the few months it worked great, but then the GPS stopped working and the step counter wasn't nearly as reliable as my separate tracker, which I was trying to eliminate. I already disable all notifications except calls on my phone so I wasn't worried about double harassment on the watch. In the end I decided they're useless. I love my exercise tracker and I don't need it to do anything else. I'm really close to downgrading to a cell phone that just makes calls because my tablet provides access to all the fun stuff I want without the incessant annoying notifications from calls and texts. Tech should be only as invasive as you want. We do not need to be in abusive relationships with corporations as well as the people we're already hemmed at the hip to!!! Lol!!! I love my friends and family. Samsung, apple and Google, and their cousins do not warrant the same kind of devotion!!!

The "phantom buzz" is real for some people. I've experienced it to. That's part of why I've considered not using one anymore. People really weren't designed to always be connected to the "grid". Currently I'm wearing an Orient automatic. I like the peace and quiet. Also, I'm not entirely convinced that's it's safe to have a Bluetooth/wifi radio almost constantly attached to your body. Sure I use Bluetooth earbuds bud not all day long.

I have been an Apple Watch user since 2017 and 95% agree. The thing is that I appreciate the aid in improving my health now that I have a chronic condition. The watch has for sure helped me, and that's invaluable. But, but... yes, the lack of uniqueness and character, the square shit, the battery oh the battery! the short span life (I've owned the series 2 and 5) ... because of the health compromise I am going to continue using smartwatches but no more Apple watch... looking forward to a Garmin Fenix 7 pro. it seems to be solid, the lack of petting with the battery at least guarantee that the battery won't die before 5 or more years, unlike the Apple Watch, after only 2 years it's at 80% of health and start to spontaneously die during workouts even at 100% of battery charge... there are many more advantages of Garmin over Apple for my use (topo maps, physiological parameters, battery life, training stats) and taste: not square, but round as a circular timepiece, measuring a cyclical parameter: time.

Yep. I wore my Apple Watch Ultra for one year. I got an automatic watch and sold my Ultra today. I paid $800 ( for the ultra) and the day the new one was announced, it dropped in value by half. I got $460 for it after fees and taxes. The main reason I got rid of it was because I thought it was a backup for my phone so if my phone ever died I could use it. My phone battery died. I tried to use the Apple Watch Ultra ( with $15/month data plan) and none of messages went through. It waited a while, they all turned red. When I contacted ATT they told me the phone has to be on and connected to the network for the messaging apps to work. 🤯 so it’s useless! Apple can try and sell that to someone else. If they fix that problem I might buy another one but I think I’m over it. I like my automatic watch a lot. It’s a micro brand but has a Swiss ETA 2824 movement which by itself is worth as much as I paid for the 300m dive watch with a sapphire crystal and an oyster bracelet.

Mine is the opposite.. I am selling my regular watches but will keep only maybe 3 to 4 pcs.. & will start to use my apple watch mostly & daily because I want a useful watch with lots of health features that will take care of me like a personal trainer & doctor.. I can tell time even in my phone so a regular watch is useless for me.. I need a watch that has health technology because I am a fit person & a gym goer.. I always keep track of my health so I need the apple watch a regular watch is useless for me & for me a regular watch is just for formal use when I am going to a formal event only.. but 6 days a week I am at the gym & I even keep track of my sleep.. So a regular watch for me is a dumb watch & useless.. People wearing traditional watches do not care about their health & maybe do not exercise & not a sporty person.. because I believe that if you are a sporty, gym goer & fit person then a smart watch is a must.. But for me I have quartz watches, solar watch, mechanical watches & an apple watch because for me all are good in their own different purposes.. but the most useful for me is the apple watch next is my casio digital watch & last option is my mechanical watch just for formal use..

Does all fitness watches track data? If not, I think i should just avoid the apple ones?

  • @Watchcastage

    @Watchcastage

All fitness devices will track data, and if you do not have to connect them via USB to your computer, it will have an antenna to broadcast that data to your phone/computer. I can’t recall if it was Fitbit or Garmin, but military bases were discovered because the running GPS data was published and they found that people would run around the perimeter of the bases. So I think all of them have some amount of risk.

I stopped, wearing wrist watches, and then bought a Apple Watch. After a year, I sold it. I have not worn a watch in three years. In fact, when I looked back most of my life, I did not wear a watch. Yeah, I almost always have to watch with me. when I was younger, I carried a wristwatch in my pocket and later on, I started caring real, honest to goodness, pocket watches. I started out with cheap courts, then went to more expensive courts and then finally to mechanicals. I’m 55 and all I now years is a pocket watch for my phone.

You can set the Apple Watch to Auto update when it comes in contact with chosen WiFi, you can turn the haptics off, you can turn sleep tracking off, you can turn blue tooth off to stop it sending information to your phone if just GPS model, I like sleep tracking as proven one of the most reliable sleep tracers out there, I like the step counter as encourages me to exercise, yes charging it daily but if you drive just plug in then as does but take long, can be used as remote control for many camera to, there are also plenty of positives to owning one, If you don’t like it sell it or just don’t by one lol 😂

Also, a traditional watch can be resold if you take care of it, smartwatches cannot due to battery lowering process. They are also heavy dependent on software, which changes all the time. Companies dont update it often and i know this from the headphone wirless industry. They do this all the time, a 2 year old smartwatch may no longer get updates. Traditional watch will allways have value due to the fact that its not based upon software, its hand made. Even a simple digital Casio can last you years and years.

As someone who doesn't own a smart watch atm and thinking of buying one... i stopped the video after point 2 and now typing this comment. I already disagree with the first two points. I don't think the watch keeping check with your health is a thing that im going to be scared about. And the second point, it manipulating you to check your watch?? Its just a signal to see if someone texts you just like a regular phone would.

Nice video but he said nothing new to me. After years of owning Apple products I kind of felt a little proud for not having ever owned an Apple Watch until a couple of weeks ago. I finally gave in but for a different reason. I’m a fan of “real watches” not a snob but I like them. The reason why I got an Apple Watch was because I decided I needed to go back in shape so would start adding cardio exercises and I wanted to take advantage of this technology. Anyways, after weeks of research on cheap smart watches I thought, these are good but look at these ones that are a little more expensive but they even look like a classic watch. Then I read about accuracy so I landed on the Fitbits which are not that cheap and I continued my research and found that the Fitbits and Samsungs are good but for people who are in the Apple ecosystem it’s a no brainer to go for the Apple Watch because it covers many areas including the accuracy. So, here I was. I started looking at $30 watches, that became $70 watches, then $170 watches and I ended up buying an almost $400 Apple Watch…🤦‍♂️ I don’t regret it though ‘cause I look at it as a piece of tech just like a phone. I didn’t get this AW with the intention of passing it down generations or anything like that. I just intend to use it for 8-10 months then sell it when the new one comes out and get it with a little discount with the money I recovered from the previous Watch and I could keep on doing that for as long as I want just like I do with my iPhones. About the tracking and security situation. I don’t mind them knowing my health situation and I don’t really wear it all the time because as I said before, I bought it mainly for jogging.

My Apple Watch doesn’t track my steps accurately at all even had the nerve to add 60 steps while I was sitting and eating for 15 minutes. I got it to track steps since the cheaper ones weren’t working correctly thinking this was going to be a better investment. I give up trying to find one now and I’m returning the Apple Watch. I was excited for this function but it’s too faulty plus I am worried about the Bluetooth exposure being so close to my body.

@@sls4170 Well we are immersed in EMF all day and night anyway. We are constantly bombarded by RFR from dozens of wifi routers at home from neighbors, at work, in the streets, etc. Also, the Radio and Tv antennas. There’s no scape. I was pretty worried about this too for a long time but I decided to stop worrying about that so much or you might end up like a germophobe after your first class of microbiology in Uni. About the accuracy, I’ll leave you with two videos: - kzread.info/dash/bejne/mHielM2SeamTo6g.html - kzread.info/dash/bejne/oXmhsJiDmaetdpM.html
