Why the Air Force made Lockheed invent a stealth POLE
When Lockheed’s legendary F-117 Nighthawk first entered service in 1983, it brought with it a revolution in military aviation. After decades of focusing on the development of higher and faster-flying aircraft to avoid enemy air defenses, the Nighthawk proved that, through a radar-defeating design, a subsonic aircraft could actually be more survivable.
What followed was decades worth of stealth innovation, competition, and advancement… but before the Nighthawk could change the world, it was up to Ben Rich, the head of Lockheed’s famed Skunk Works at the time, to sell the Air Force on the idea.
And in order to do that, Skunk Works first had to invent a stealth pole for the Air Force.

......I gotta be honest: Kinda making me want to Invade your nation, with that dad joke. 🤷♂️ you honestly got me to me think, for the first time ever, "Nah, I was wrong and didn't look at it from your side fully, Germany. The whole Invasion of Poland thing.....I understand where you were coming from a tiny bit now, Germany. I mean, morally....I wouldn't have acted the same (I mean, make a snarky, unfunny post or something. don't kill people and try to take over the world about it. Geez.) but.... I almost get one of your points now, 'Circa Just Before WWII Germany.' " Poland: who needs em? 🤷♂️ I shouldn't have to say this but: ☝👆 .....all jokes. None of it was meant seriously. I just don't want SJW's or White Knight type of people to get confused and offended over a joke. I also don't want to be rude and feel obligated to hand feed the fact that it's a joke to Poles. A joke, Poles, is meant to be funny and not actually an insult, in this case. 👍 😉

The f117 has to be my personal favourite aircraft ever. So iconic and imo, so aggressive looking. Blew my mind the first time I ever saw pictures of one.

It was a flying brick, though. Not very good at being a fighter. It was mainly a proof of concept for radar stealth technology.

What’s so incredibly complex about this? Isn’t it almost self evident that if you detract a radar wave away from an object attempting to be detected, and identified , to me, it seems like basic physics and Geometry. I don’t think I know it all, but it seems like a pretty simple principle to me. Playing Billiards is a simple geometric/ Physics game, nearly anyone can play with some simple obvious action/reaction Newtons law. It seems pretty simple to me. I have cataracts, so I know I probably makemade oneword spelling errors here, because I can’t always accurately determine what letters U I touched. Anyway…… I couldn’t see well enough to fix all my errors. I come from a science family on my dad’s side, so maybe that’s why it seems simple to me.

Too bad Chinese got their hands on a crashed f117 in serbia and reverse engineered the shit out of it. Along with all the secret documents hacked from boing and lockeed martin servers by individuals paid by china. USA did all the r&d and china built their J20 and H20 based off it without all the hassle & cost. Having an edge in technology doesn't mean shit when you can't protect it. And thanks to all these, China now rivals USA's world domination.

I love that moment where a person who has grown to admire someone great in a field that they are passionate about, wins an award on par with something that the person they admire would win. It then takes them a bit of time to realize they are the next generation, they are the legend now, the person who will be considered one of the best in their field for the coming future. We all already realize it, but it takes a minute to soak it in. Congrats on the award, we all know just how good you are at what you do.
8:59 ...Of course. Even when it comes to building a pole, Lockheed still manages to find a way to somehow screw-over Northrop.
Alex your professionalism and humble approach is so refreshing. You deserve all the accolades and positive vibes you receive. Keep up the great work.

An award well deserved, and many more in the future. Your work is second to none.
CONGRATULATIONS! Having grown up on a diet of flying, pouring over the big, hard-cover Jane's books and memorizing aircraft specs (wish they'd bring them back), watching Wings, etc, etc, I know what professional aerospace coverage looks like, and you deliver! I am elated that you received this prize and recognition, and hope it aids in propelling you forward in the field. Cheers!
It was funny that they would raise and take down their F117 models between soviet satellite intervals to keep it from being seen but they were able to take that infrared picture of White Sands and were able to see the silhouette of what was on the pole just from the shape of the Nighthawks shadow making a cool spot on the sand lol. Awesome video man, always love learning something new about that old plane :)

Congratulations on being recognized with the award, and congratulations on another outstanding video. I knew they had put a model on a pole but I didn’t know about the fascinating story of the stealth pole. Very interesting!
Simply a great video deal please keep them coming

Great video. I love your research, knowledge, presentation and passion that comes out in these videos.
When they were testing the have blue stealth model on the radar range, the technician asked them to make sure it hadn't fallen off because he couldn't see it. The plane was actually still on the pylon and just about the time a bird landed on the have blue model, the radar technician says I see it now. This is not a direct quote but it's in Ben Rich's book about the skunk works. It's a great book if you haven't read it I strongly suggest it.
Congrats on the award you deserve it. You do a great job bringing us Defense news without no bull crap which is hard to find. Thanks Alex USA

Congratulations! You worked hard and diligently!
Congratulations on the award. I'm not surprised at all as both your writing and videos are world class journalism. I hope you win several more.
As I said to some friends, your videos mix an overview of technical stuff with sources for more detailed research into various topics. Its quite a hard work to distill such stuff without dumbing it down. Despite me not being a military (or aviation) buff, I quite like because of the tech.
Congrats Alex ... well deserved!

They had a stealth ALCM (AGM-129) but it had issues, so they ditched it in favor of staying with the non-stealth design (AGM-86). May as well let the Russkies know the nukes are coming and give them a few moments to think about what they did before the end arrives.
Great stuff! Very interesting!

Best story about a pole on KZread.
Congrats man, you deserve it
I've seen that pole or it's sister! I've been to lockheed's radar test range facility in the SoCal high desert when that facility during a family day tour when a relative worked there. Clearly all of the test models and other sensitive stuff was hidden. The pole had an asymmetric calibration model mounted on it. We got to go down to the bottom of the pit where it retracts underground. Also got to see the radar image of the calibration model. Interestingly one of the radar images they showed us had a bird flying through the test range and the bird was significantly more reflective than the pole or calibration model. The radar array was like a drive-in movie screen. Very impressive stuff to my then teenage aviation fanatic eyes.
Excellent
Congrats on award - you deserve it! Pls do some tutorials on radar in general, including gems like the POLE. Thx 🤓
This certainly gives new meaning to the term, *_"pole position."_* 😊😊😊
congrats on the award mate! keep up the good work

I love the story!!!
sandbox news never miss a drop? why not never miss a grain?
Congratulations!
It was so good, bats in the hangar were flying into it at night. from the book, Skunk Works. (the F117)
Line from the Rich book: there was a panel screw half a turn loose, radar had no problem seeing plane. A tech fixed the screw, plane disappeared. Stealth is not just construction, but insane maintenance requirements too.
When I heard a Blackbird landed on the model, I was confused and astonished. The I realised an actual bird was spoken about, not the aircraft. Well deserved award too
well deserved award 👏
