Why the 300 PRC?

Спорт

There are plenty of 300 "magnums" out there, so why did I choose the .300 PRC and how is it different or better than other big 300's?

    i love the 300 Win Mag, it’s an amazing cartridge. However, I’ve had the opportunity to compare a decent factory 300WM rifle with a much cheaper 300 PRC rifle. the 300 WM was great but the 100 yard accuracy was not so hot. maybe 2 MOA on a good day. the cheap Howa 300 PRC shot between .75-1MOA groups right out of the box. what you said (and what Hornady says) about that chamber spec is absolutely true in my experience. the 300 PRC is really specced for accuracy right from the factory. Outstanding cartridge! i think to match that accuracy with a 300 WM I’d need to get a custom reamer and chamber set up.

    I never expected to buy a 300 PRC but went for a CVA Cascade XT and I’m very impressed with the accuracy and happy I made the purchase.

    I love my RPR magnum. I found it to be tighter than the gen 2 rifles.

    The 175gr SMK was specifically designed to stay supersonic past 1000yards from .308 sniper rifles.

    Great info in here. Funny this shows up as I'm looking at replacing my RPR in .338 LM in favour of something that shoots .300 PRC because I just cannot get my hands on Large Rifle Magnum Primers and I kind of want something between the .308 and .338 LM.

    Thanks for watching. Unfortunately, the .300 PRC also uses large rifle magnum primers. Just keep your eye out for these primers and you will get them.

    @@sdkweber I’m sure they are around some where. I should mention I shoot left handed and as you’re probably aware there are no left handed RPR’s. I’m also looking at the per shot cost of .300 PRC versus .338 LM.

    @@TheIamfrustrated There is a pretty huge difference in cost per round as you may already have figured out. I am seeing Hornady Precision Hunter Factory ammo for the .338 Lapua priced at $127 for 20 ($6.35 per round) (out of stock) while the Hornady Precision Hunter for the .33 PRC is only $55 for 20 ($2.75 per round) plus it is in stock. I also picked up some of Hornady Precision Match .300 PRC on sale for only $48 for a box of 20.

    @@sdkweberfor your information you might want to check out Peterson Brass because they are making a new version of 300WM Long brass and they explain why the old brass doesn’t last as long because of the way the chamber is cut. The new brass is the same price as the old brass, but it will last longer because the new design is sized to the correct SAAMI specs diameter of the chamber. Just found this out at the beginning of the month and thought I’d would share it with you and your viewers to know.

    What are the two bullets that you used for the 338 LM and 300 PRC comparison?

    Good question Steve. I used the Hornady 4DOF calculator for all these and specifically the 285 gr. ELD Match (.338 LM) and the 225 gr. ELD Match (.300 PRC).

    Why would you get a barret over a full custom build with an amazing chamber? Not judging. Just wondering.

  • @sdkweber

    @sdkweber

    8 ай бұрын

    I am not convinced that is what I would do, but it is quite appealing to simply buy another barrel kit and use the same rifle/scope etc. The chamber and overall impressions I have of the Barrett MRAD is excellent so I am not sure a custom build would do much more for me. But the MRAD is still new and I do not have many rounds through it yet.

    Why do you think the gov chose 338 Norma mag and 300 Norma Mag for their Mk22 MRAD system? It's kind of a head scratcher to me.

  • @sdkweber

    @sdkweber

    It is puzzling to me also. But the military does not make decisions like we do. I read the 300 PRC "was chosen for its high ballistic coefficient, high muzzle velocity, and devastating terminal effects on target. This is the preferred anti-personnel round for engaging targets out to 1500 meters." But the PRC has all that plus longer barrel life. The .338 Norma is even more of a head scratcher as it seems to fall short of the .338 Lapua.

    Another one to look at is the .30 Nosler. The 300 PRC is excellent. Just last weekend my son and I were consistently hit an 18" steel plate at 910 yards under windy conditions. The .300 PRC bullets are "mapped" using Doppler radar and all this is available through Hornday's 4DOF, allowing me to get a hit on my second shot at that range (the wind pushed it right on shot one so needed one more click). From that point, we rarely missed. I am not sure the Nosler will have that available and its not chambered in lots of rifles. Thanks for watching and posting.

    I get a little tired of hearing about 308 being used to win competitions and how the military used it in sniper rifles for so many years. Sure the 308 can still do everything it did in the past, its not getting any better than that. No body is consistently winning any PRS, Bench rest or F class competitions with 308 anymore. We now have plenty of cartridges that are far more capable, many from factory rifle and loading.

  • @sdkweber

    I hear you and agree. The .308 is limited and is not a 1,000 yard rifle. I talk about in my videos because I have a .308 Win. plus lots of our viewers are familiar with it and can relate to it, so it is a good comparison. Thanks for watching.

    @@caesar5555 I was actually surprised by the ballistics of the 300 PRC and how it kept up with the 338 Lapua. The .338 is a tremendous round and certainly has the advantage in terminal ballistics.
