Ep. 111 - Choosing a PRC Cartridge

Спорт

On this episode, Seth is joined by fellow marketeer, Judd Jarzynka, and Assistant Director of Engineering, Joe Thielen. This episode is centered around the “PRC” family of rifle cartridges. Specifically, the topic of “which one should you choose?” The guys break the conversation down by application and share their thoughts on which they would choose in a variety of scenarios. It’s sure tough to play favorites in the PRC line, so you may feel the urge to collect them all!

I had bought both the 300prc and the 6.5prc in anticipation of the 7. The 300 is definitely Thor's hammer! With a little weight and the right muzzle brake, the recoil is very manageable. Im currently working up a load for the Barnes 208gr LRX bullet but would love to try the 190CX. With that being said, the 6.5 is my baby. Its everything I want. In fact I will probably build a 2nd rifle in that caliber. The 147gr ELD-M has been devastating on everything Ive shot. Looking forward to a 7prc build for a friend very soon. Thank you for your continued work and development on these new cartridges and these high BC bullets. Its making long range shooting easier for the average person.

Great video, love yalls podcasts. I guess my only question, right now Hornady has a factory hot rod in the 7RM, (that I have) with the 139 gr SST at 3240 MV, any thought to adding that weight to the 7 PRC, then that would truly cover everything from groundhogs to elephants lol in the 7 PRC. Thanks again for doing these podcasts.

Thanks for this Hornady Podcast. It was interesting to hear the perspectives from each of you. My cartridge proposal would be something along the lines of similar velocity to the 6.5 creedmoor in 7mm option. I have heard people doing a 7-6.5 PRC wildcat, but it would be nice to have a factory option. I also think it would appeal to those who don’t think 6.5 is enough, but also want something with a bit less recoil.

I shoot a 6,5 PRC as hunting and sporting caliber in a Ruger Precision Rifle here Germany. I dont mind the weight as my hunting is from a high stand for safety reasons (angle toward the ground) only and the walk to that is seldom more than half a Kilometer. I need a minimum of 6,5 mm bullet diameter and the 6,5 PRC compliments my 6,5 Grendel. Great Podcast as always. Greetings from Germany 🍀👋🏻.

I’m honestly more impressed with my 280ai. 300prc I see zero advantage over a 300wm for hunting. Just my honest opinion.

I'd like to suggest barrel contours and dimensions as a topic for a podcast, specifically the question of what barrel contour do you need as you move up in cartridge size? The Remington Varmint/Sendero (Proof Sendero Light) is very popular, but has a very short shank which may not be ideal for large magnum cartridges like the 300 PRC. We've seen issues in testing carbon fiber barrels with these larger and more powerful cartridges. I notice that Proof no longer offers barrels in Sendero Light contour longer than 22" for 7mm and up. What's your recommendation on barrel contours and material for larger, more powerful cartridges like the 300 PRC, 300 NM, etc?

I run short barrels on 5 of my guns. Remington XP-100, in 7mm RSAUM (17.5” bbl; 162 ELDX @ 2850 fps), 30 Nosler (18.5” bbl; 210’s @ 2825 fps). The 7mm PRC is the one I’m likely to do next in a rifle with at least a 24”-26” bbl, or the 6.5 PRC in an XP-100 with a 17.5”-18.5” bbl As much as I like the 300 PRC, I’ve got a custom 300 RUM that leaves the 300 PRC in the dust, but it’s a custom chamber that basically fixes the issues with the SAAMI chamber. Nice podcast. Keep up the good work. No need to run faster powders for shorter barrels either (well documented by handgun hunters/shooters over the past decades).

I think the 6.5 is the best all around hunting round of the three. Short action for a light rifle, least recoil, and basically 270 (or better performance. That’s a winning combo. I also think a 7mm on the 6.5 case would be cool. And maybe a 338 on the 300 case.

For my purposes here in Alberta, and I've hunted BC a lot, the 6.5 would do fine, a 7 would too, but, a either would have to be in a carefully built gun with the right stock on it. The stock makes more difference than most people would ever believe, design and material it is built in matter. Can't have suppressors here, no use for a brake, so it'll be a 24" bbl either way. I'm not running out and buying a PRC, don't need it, I have used 7-08 on everything up to moose, had 7RM's and a 338WM and 450-400NE, still have a 300H&H too. The go to now is a 30R Blaser, will test out a 6.5CM,, the 7-08 and the 300 are there, if I want to use them

Great discussion 👍 I just bought a 6.5 prc barreled action for a precision build. I did about 3 months of arduous due diligence for making the decision. I have a 300 WinMag, 7mm Rem Mag as my "big guns". With the choices in factory loads and especially with developing hand loads, both of them will do anything I want to do, at the cost of recoil. I want to get into the LR target arena and I just didn't feel like my 25.06, 22.250, 7.08, or.308 win were capable of being competitive even with load development. There's just not a selection of really high performance projectiles and with the case limitations, I figured I should get something made for the task. Would it be fun to have a 25cal prc? Sure, but it's basically a 6mm and we've already been there and done that. A 270 also occupies an in between area plus with the 270wsm, what you don't like about the regular 270 can be achieved. It would be cool if better projectiles for some of the existing calibers were developed, that would be fun, but I get it ; for the cost of R&D you probably would never make the money back or they would be cost prohibitive for the consumer. I think you guys did exactly what should have been done, by taking 3 popular and common rounds and working them to the endth degree 🤙 Thanks again!

I went with the 7mm PRC with a 22" barrel. I chose it for versatility. From pronghorn to brown bear, I think this could do it. Are there better choices at those extremes? Sure. But is there a better choice for doing ALL of that? I doubt it. I haven't shot anything but paper with it yet. Shot some of the Precision Hunter but I have a box of Outfitter I want to try. I would love to see a 25 PRC! (In a true short action, rather than the almost-short action of the 6.5") Something like that might put my 25-06 out to pasture. And maybe I'll get a 375 Ruger for that brown bear.

225 eldm out of my 300 prc going 3000 fps(26” barrel loaded with max load of lrt off hodgdon 1-8” twist) flatter than the 180 eldm going the same muzzle velocity. Checked with 4dof. With a 7 prc you just need a 30” barrel to hit box posted velocities. It’s sad to see that the 7 prc doesn’t hit advertised velocities. Will you add the 6.8 western, you mentioned the .277 prc as an option, it would just be a remake of it.

I love my 6.8 spc. The 120 sst absolutely SMACKs under 300 yards. However, it’d be awesome to get more distance with the same bullet diameter. The reason the Grendel and 6arc perform better at distance is that they have the long, high bc bullets. The spc came out right before that took off. So my challenge is this: a high bc 6.8 sst packed into a creedmoor case, as an option for ar10 platform as well as bolt guns. It would essentially be a 6.5 cm necked up to 6.8 but would probably punch harder for any naysayers to the 6.5 effectiveness on deer. The 6.8 western missed the mark by having a larger case diameter, so it isn’t applicable to the ar platform.

I absolutely love my 6mm PRC and I would love it if Hornady adopted it and started making some factory ammo for it. In my experience, it can do everything that a 6.5 PRC can do within about 1000 yards (at my high mountain altitude anyway) but has much less recoil which allows for better follow ups and shoots extremely flat which helps with any ranging errors. I've taken coyote and elk with it, nothing has required more than 1 shot with a 110 grain Hornady Atip traveling at 3340 fps or a Cutting Edge MTH 88gr at 3630.

My thoughts would be a 22 PRC, but I have no idea how that would compare to the 22 ARC. I picked up a 7 PRC, 22" barrel, and can't wait to get to the range. What suppressor should I get for it? My priorities are light weight and compact size. And, I'd hope to have dB of less than 140 for the shooter.

That's more or less impossible in a 338 caliber. High BC 338 bullets start up at 275-300gr. In order to push those, you need a long action or more. Even a 33 nosler doesn't really have the capacity to shoot high bc 338s. You need to step up to the 100gr+ case capacity to shoot those. So... 338lapua, 338 norma. The 338rcm was a ballistic twin to the 338-06. You can still find rifles chambered in both, but 338rcm brass more or less doesn't exist and factory ammo is long gone. It's pretty easy to make 338-06 brass. But high BC bullets it cannot push.

most dont use a ten pound rifle when hunting that is heavy so more recoil for most. a decent length with a can yes. half mile is 880 yards not 800. as for tge 300 PRC who needs it or wants the recoil? very very few for most the 6.5 is plenty who gets an elk tag? or needs something for bears or moose/bison? few need more than the 6.5 with that CX bullet. if you have a 7 rem mag maybe tune that. for many a 6.5 with a smaller calibre for varmints and similar will cover most things they do and need. the 6 creed or an old 243 with classic stock or a 222 even.

@@RepublicofTX Thanks captain Obvious. The point I’m making is that’s a lot of velocity difference for 2” less of barrel and is much greater than the 25-50fps loss per inch of barrel than is commonly seen as your barrel gets shorter. So is the muzzle velocity listed on the box of Hornady ammo bogus, or is it an issue within the ammo itself like too slow of a powder selection to work with the shorter 22” barrels that are becoming more popular on hunting rifles as more and more people hunt with suppressors?

Any tips on reduced recoil loads or ammo for the 7mm PRC? Years ago, Hodgdon published a lot of specific reduced-recoil loads (including for the similar 7mm Rem Mag), but no longer has them on their website. I would prefer one good rifle with good scope (instead of two lesser rifles with cheaper scopes) but would only rarely need the full power and range of the cartridge. Most of the hunting round me is 200 yards and under. Back injuries make recoil painful these days (and I am a little guy to begin with), so I am looking for a solution that makes both my back and my wallet happy. FWIW, the dual-purpose nature of the 277 Fury would appeal to me if it were more common and less expensive. The lower pressure brass-cased rounds would work most of the time with the occasional hybrid-cased load for bigger game and or longer distance. The 7 PRC makes more sense in the real world, though. Thanks

Get a good rifle that fits you well with a break on it and recoil won’t be an issue, personally I’m a big fan of my Weatherby vanguard in 7 rem mag. Has the factory matched radial break, could shoot it all day without any discomfort. Just swapping my out recoil pads can make an astonishing difference in felt recoil, I’m impartial to limbsaver pads but there are plenty of good ones to try. A stock that fits you, a muzzle break, and a good recoil pad makes a 7 rem Mag into something anyone can shoot. As far as reduced recoil loads both Hornady and Remington offer factory loading with managed/reduced recoil last I knew. Federal used to offer some but I heard they stopped. Not saying this as a replacement for hand loads, just that a box or two to see how they do it may be a good place to start towards developing your own load.

@@scottcraig5164 I just have a fondness for 7mm. The question is more out of curiosity than anything else. A decade or so ago, Hodgdon had published low recoil hunting loads for many cartridges, including magnums. mostly using H4895. Currently the detailed loads are gone and the instruction is to use H4895 with this qualification: "This works only where H4895 is listed. DO NOT use in a cartridge where H4895 is not shown." H4895 is not shown for the PRC's (although, interestingly, loads for Accurate 5744, another powder used in reduced recoil are listed for 6.5 PRC and 300 PRC). edited to add: found a copy of the old H4895 load data on the Terminal Ballistics Research website by searching for "hodgdon h4895 reduced loads".

@@scottcraig5164 5744 is one of those powders that ignites well in low volumes and is used for reduced-recoil loads.. Accurate (now owned by Hodgdon) says that the its low-recoil formula is to start at 40% case volume (measured to base of bullet). For example, the 6.5 PRC load listed for the 147 ELD-M starts at 30.2 grains of Accurate 5744 and only produces 2386 fps, which is considerably slower than factory 6.5 Creedmoor loads with this bullet. For example most full power loads for this bullet with the 6.5 PRC use closer to 60 grains of propellant and produce velocities roughly 500 fps faster.
