Why Teen Titans: The Judas Contract is Disappointing

While the 2003 Teen Titans TV show tackled The Judas Contract storyline, it was not a 1:1 adaptation. This is where 'Teen Titans: The Judas Contract' comes in; a DC animated film that attempts to do the original material justice.
Does this film from the DC animated universe work or is The Judas Contract disappointing?

Well the prologue from the Killing Joke at least sets up the fact that Babs is Batgirl and why her getting shot is so important to not only Batman but the audience. it still connects to the story. the sex thing between her and batman is just a call back to the JLA episode where old Babs tells Terry that she had a thing with Bruce

You see, my main problem with these animated movies is that they are too short for the stories they try to tackle with, don't get me wrong i like them a lot (specially Batman vs Robin and Justice League vs Teen Titans) but they would be way better with an extra 30 to 40 minutes to flesh-out more of the story and better set up relations between the characters.

They didn't even show 📺 us how Terra joined the Titans..... They just skipped it..... Unlike Teen Titans we saw the evolution of who Terra was and how she became the person she was.... This was forced and rushed... I like Nightwing and Starfire.... But I don't think we had to see them meeting as an opening.... It should have been the introduction to Terra and how she got into the team.

So many problems with the film, and I think the basic flaw is a pure misunderstanding of the source material and the unnecessary changes to the cast of characters. The comic is a masterpiece for many reasons, and Tera herself is really only a minor part of it. A great movie like "Gone with the Wind" or the 1959 "Ben-Hur," takes a character and totally evolves that protagonist so they've become a different person by the end of the film. The comics version of ths story is set against the backdrop of doubt leading up to Wally's decision to leave, Dick's move from Robin to Nightwing, and the questions about Donna's backstory. The Judas Contract is a crucial part of the evolution of the Teen Titans in the Perez/Wolfman authorship. The time constraints you point out are completely valid, and even if they had not made these confusing and out of context cast changes, this is not a 90 minute story. This is a "Gone with the Wind"/"Ben-Hur" tale.

  • @CoreIdeas

    @CoreIdeas

EXACTLY! While I gloss over a lot of the material (Brother Blood, Dick turning into Nightwing, Jericho, etc), I'm only doing so because the adaptations don't delve into them. While it worked for the TV show, the film tries to be "faithful", while ignoring the build up and team dynamics that made it what it was.

You're right. On paper she would be the best Terra. Take the hero titan that fails to be a hero and is almost murdered for her attempts at heroism, then taken in by Deathstroke and forged into the. villain Terra. She's torn between the hopefully Terra she was born as and the cynical Terra she was forced to become. The ability to relate to Damien would only increase. And then have the 2003 beastboy no friends line moved into Slade's sexual exploitation and betrayal. Wow, that would hurt, a lot. You really are right, on paper this could have been a great evolution of Terra, but it wasn't fleshed out for us to care.

I hated how they tried so hard to make her a blend of not only her psychopathic and irredeemable comic version, but also her tragic and caring TV series version. To me at least the effort just didn't pay off and I couldn't decide whether she was truly worthy of her redemption or not cause let's be honest. She only truly felt sorry after Deathstroke backstabbed her. If he hadn't she would have done jacksh*t to help the Titans.

I know you went over the changes with Terra's character, but I want to mention Deathstroke. First of all he was extremely nurfed, he went from being able to slap nightwing aside with ease, to it being a legitimate struggle. Second, the character in the comics had a sense of honor. Not wanting to shoot nightwing because the bullet might hit a bystander was a big example. However, this version has never shown anything close to that. And finally, the motivation. You brought it up earlier, but the Deathstroke in the comics was hunting the titans partly as revenge and partly to honor his son. This deathstroke's motivation is partly money and partly a grudge over robin specifically. Sum it up to say that I enjoyed the original character a lot more.

This made me realize that OG Terra is a lot like Kyoko from Madoka Magica. A selfish amoral girl who only wanted to use her powers for herself. But with that character, she grew, learned and changed. The issue with Terra is she wasn't originally built to be a character, if she had been things would have been different, she was a strawman the writers used to subvert expectations. Honestly I find og Terra to be a bit unrealistic with her static personality and one dimentionality. I suppose that was the point of her though so I guess it's whatever. Great vid!

I guess even the writers thought Starfire and Nightwing was the best part of the movie, so they started it with them. And Tera from the original story is more like TTG Tera? The majority of the comic's beginning was dedicated to the titans fighting Joker, and them it suddenly jumps to Cyborg creating a new Titans East while bringing back several obscure characters like Anima. Then the writers suddenly wipe them all out so we can be subjected to an entire arc of yet another Raven and family issues.

Excellent analysis, I think I was a lot less hard on the film when I saw it because I was simply overwhelmed by how much I liked the films take on Beat Boy. Unlike a lot of Teen Titan fans I never gravitated to his portrayal in the original Teen Titans animated series, to be frank I found him almost as annoying as Jar Jar Binks and the version of him in Young Justice seemed a little bland. Anyway, in taking up your points, if they wanted to have a tragic backstory for Tera, why not have her unintentionally cause a mountainside in the village she grew up in, killing most of the population and so the survivors are simply lashing out at her. This would have gotten around the issue you pointed out that, in a world with so many metahumans, their reactions seemed completely nonsensical.

Personally you need to show me a person, real or fictional, doing some pretty nasty harm to others for me not to feel bad about them suffering and dying. If I am not a huge outlier, then I imagine the phrase should really be "If you did this, then the character dying would have much more emotional impact."

The opening scene that you're harping on seems (sadly) to be a staple of DC animated films...at least insofar as the films based around the "New 52" is concerned. It seems that EVERY ONE of these films, from Son of Batman up all have at least one scene that either doesn't relate to the plot or is fan service related (which I wholly dislike in otherwise serious or semi-serious films, games and manga). Like Batman fighting the metahumans at the docks in Son of Batman or Damian trying to sneak out of Wayne Manner in Batman vs Robin. The biggest offender of this trope to me being the anime inspired fan service "magical girl transformation" scene in Justice League vs. Teen Titans. All instances of scenes that could have been cut in favor of something more substantial that either drove the narrative forward or better supported the films' narrative or tone.

Also Terra doubling down on capturing them in the movie is because she doesn’t want to feel bad about what she’s done even though she knows it’s wrong because of her obsession with Slade. That doesn’t make her a bad person it makes her realistic. She went through a similar thing in the 2003 show where she went off the deep end because she had no one other than Slade left to turn to and he preyed upon her hurt feelings of not being accepted by Beast Boy to make her feel like the Titans deserved it for not helping her despite it being her mistakes that caused the whole thing.

Two reasons that DC animated movies have not been that good since Under The Red Hood is one, they keep forcing people to like Damian Wayne by putting him in every movie and making him the focus and in the process ruin them. An example of this is Batman vs Robin which should have been the Court of Owls storyline and now they're doing the same with the upcoming Hush animated film. I like Damian, but not in the animated versions. And two is they are still adding the New 52 garbage which most people don't like. I smell studio executives.

You should warn people of spoilers. Blending different versions of something is what alot of companies are doing. Like look at Disney, almost every live action remake is a blend of the original animation, the original fairy tail source material, and alterations for one reason or another that are rarely plot reasons. With that third one for example Beauty and the Beast, they have feminist like messages like bell trying to teach a younger girl to read and being mocked by the town for it. Stuff kinda just thrown in there like way too many outsider voices had a say but no information and/or effort. Like the author of the script wasn't one person, like they depended on the previous material to do the writing for them and just had people throw in random ideas.

It is kind of interesting how much personal perspective can affect how you enjoy a movie, because this movie's interpretation of Terra is actually my favourite version, possibly tied with the one from the animated show. I really dislike the Terra in the comics, by the way, I guess I just prefer her to be sympathetic. It is kind of the exact opposite of my opinion on Blackfire where I'd been her comic book counterpart to be vastly superior as a character to the one in the animated show, I tends to prefer villains who has some complexity to them rather than being just evil for the sake of evil, but I guess it is just a personal preference of mine

The last really good DC Animated film was The Flashpoint Paradox. I kind of like Assault on Arkham & Gotham by Gaslight, but all of the New 52, 'punch first & ask questions later' films ranged from subpar to awful, IMO anyway. I miss the days of DC Animated Films that had action AND good plots & dialogue, instead of just a lot of punching & blowing up things; Doom, Crisis on Two Earths, Public Enemies, Apocalypse, The New Frontier, etc, were all excellent, maybe because they had better source material, maybe because they had better writers (perhaps the death of Dwyane McDuffie played a part in that), maybe because they were trying to mimic the Cinematic Universe, maybe all of the above plus more, I don't know. They even managed to botch The Killing Joke, one of my favorite comic stories ever. Either way, I can't understand why they continue down this current road of disappointment. I guess these films are making money, so they don't care, which would be sad. I hope they wise up & get it together, if they trash Batman: Hush, another one of my favorite stories/Batman stories, I guess I'll just totally give up on them altogether.

I knew something had gone horribly-wrong as the opening scene played in the film. The Titans see some sort of alien conflict taking place, and one of them notes that they have no idea what the situation is or what any figure's role is, or... anything, really. But they dive in and start beating up the larger group, anyway. This is something I'd expect to see in a parody, not something done in earnest. In the aftermath, Starfire dropped down, after not being able to speak English, kissed Robin, and then blatantly stated, in English, that she can learn other people's languages by kissing. This is just downright stupid and bludgeons the audience over the head like they're idiots. This prologue covers the same basic storyline that we also see in the 2003's Season 5 episode, "Go!" Strange how that episode of a children's cartoon handled the scene with more nuance and didn't treat its audience like they were stupid and couldn't understand the obvious that was directly in front of them without a character blatantly spelling it out for them, yet the PG-13 movie certainly did. When the kids show is more nuanced and treats its audience like they're smarter than how your PG-13 film treats its audience, you know you've screwed up.

I have to disagree with Terra. The original comic book one is unrealistic because they try to say she was born bad (which is impossible) but also say she’s insane from a mental disorder which literally means she can’t be held morally accountable for her actions because she’s crazy and thus isn’t choosing to be bad. The original Comic Terra is a case of victim blaming a teenage girl with a mental condition as being evil for her actions, but then sweeping the 50 year old man raping her’s evil under the rug as being a better person than her despite him being able to choose who he is due to not being insane. It’s disgusting that the comic sympathizes more with a pedophile who is grooming an unstable child into being a killer rather than getting her help, than the actual victim of the story. The TV show realized this and smartly put the blame on Slade where it belongs. This movie’s Terra is still better than the comic Terra by default not because she’s more sympathetic from not being insane, but because the movie doesn’t vilify an insane abuse victim (a child no less) while exonerating her abuser. The original Comic Terra is not evil, she’s insane. The comic might disagree but that caveat makes the narrator of the story wrong about who is evil and who isn’t in that storyline. The writer probably had good intentions with that story but they got the situation completely wrong and (maybe unintentionally) sided with a bad case of morality by putting the blame on The teenage girl whose too insane (and too young) to be held accountable for her actions. IE not evil.

It's like you said maybe with more time they could have done something better. Yes, the begining is pointless, so as the Brother Blood storyline, but the character itself was... ok. First off, her backstory wasn't really a problem to me. I just asume a lot of things there, like what kind of people her townfolks were or the type of place she live in. Then we have her development and I kinda like it though it was very rushed. I don't think they were trying to make her more sympathetic, just more complex. Yeah, she was evil but she was also a person. She grow up knowing only what Slade told her, he was the only contact she had with him so she start to rely on him and eventually love him. Then when she meet the Titans, they are nothing like Slade told her and she star to have doubts, and when she acknowkledge her feelings for Beast Boy she get scare because she thinks she's betraying Deathstroke so she goes back to him in denial. And finaly, whe Slade indeed betrays her, she realised what she has done, and how he manipulated her. Idk, I could be wrong though and it's like you said: They should have developed her better but they run out of time.

The new Terra from Young Justice is kinda weird. I understand -sort of- what the writers where dealing with here. Same deal as with Spiderman they had to deal with an audience that knows what´s going to happen due to the multiple iterations of the character so he "actually been working for Deathstroke" twist doesn´t come as a twist for most. That´s why they chose to have her not try to kill BB at the end and instead had Geoforce become the bad guy. Geoforce arc was Really good and well developed through out the season but Terra´s was kinda lazy. As if the writers were telling us "we all know she is evil, so here, watch her sexting Deathstroke or what not" Then in a VERY UNDERwhelming scene (not even just whelming) she flies a rock on top of BB, then Artemis tells her she´d always know because Batman is the guy from _Lie to Me_ now aparently, and she doesn´t kill him. Then she is suddenly good and redeemed. And that was it. Like what the fuck. Again the twist with Geoforce was great but Terra´s character had no love put into her and the characterization they gave her is no more than that of a brick wall.

Don't think that way; it is an important distinction and one I should have made clear. It's valid criticism and I appreciate you pointing it out.

Yep. That sums everything up. The movie was a disappointment because the producers decided there ideas were better than the original. Marv Wolfman.

I think the disappointing part about this iteration is that a version that both combines the original and 2003 version of this character would work as a distinctive reminder that she is a mentally ill 15 year old. A malignant person, who at the end of the day is lost and confused. She hates and does not know why. Her sexual relationship with Slade also opens the door to a deeper interpretation of the character and the dynamic of that relationship. Tara can be a sympathetic character without being a good or reasonable person. It all depends on her framing on how they can develop these details and make a complex character.

As long as you can find an hour and a half, you'll be fine. Rarely do they go over 80 minutes.

Not really, she was specifically created for that storyline. They used her once during the Black Lantern arc to torment Beast Boy.
