Why Sweden Loves Food in Tubes

Food in a tube is popular in Sweden. You can get caviar in a tube, spreadable bacon-flavored cheese in a tube, tomato puree in a tube and so much more. But why? Why are there so many food tubes in Sweden? We went to Karla Marie Paredes for the answer. This food tube expert wrote her master’s thesis on the Swedish obsession with this unique means of food delivery.

The video is named "Why..." but it never answers why. I'm Swedish and one of the reasons i sometimes buy food in a tube is because it doesn't create any dishes. If you have the food in a jar, you need a spoon to pick it up and spread it. Another reason for tubes is that the content lasts longer (lasts, as in doesn't get bad) because no germs or oxygen have the chance to enter it.

Tubes are fantastic industrial design for food or anything you don't want contaminated, because it only ever goes out, never back inside. You don't need to put a spoon or other foreign object in to get the paste out, so there is virtually no risk of contamination. This means it will take longer until your food in a tube spoils!

Yes, but why? [EDIT: BEST answer is below from Pani Poni Dash who commented on this comment.] Answer: 0:46 - shows the conclusion of her thesis which says that the post wwii technological innovations in food processing and packaging from the U.S. met with the social and cultural changes in Scandinavia in terms of the growth of a consumer and convenience culture and tube food has been a hit ever since. But why so much tube food though compared to America and other countries when the same factors were present? Must’ve just been used for food more and taken off more in Sweden? In America toothpaste got tubed but not other consumables. Maybe the question should be why didn’t tubed food items take off in other places too? America had the technology and the rise in demand for conveniences, etc. too. This is both funny and even more frustrating: anyone who is surprised and bemused by the novelty of all the tubed food items in Scandinavia compared to other regions of the world are always wondering the eternal “WHY?!?!” 😁🤣😂. And when we think someone here has finally provided the answer, we are foiled again as to this curiosity. My guess is that, much more so than other regions, the food companies in Scandinavia just immediately thought of all the food items tubing could be applied to and improve the storage, preservation, shelving, shelf life (including after opening), ease and cost of shipping, and user experience, and so they actually did it, OR: tubing raw materials and processes were cheap and a packaging company or companies really saw an opportunity and took off with it. And the people / consumers just adapted to it and adopted it right away. And then maybe that was just the new and only way to get the products available at the time (versus a simultaneously existing other format to buy them in) so they might not have even questioned it, much less had the option of rejecting it. AND , let’s face it, squeezing out just the right amount of fish roe or caviar IS a superior way of dispensing that stuff (and preserving the rest for later!) 🙂 Also, Scandinavian food items might have lent themselves to tubing more than foods from other regions like America. It’s possible that Scandinavia has many more foods with a creamy or paste like and/or concentrated consistency that lend themselves to being tubed in the first place. I mean, one of the things that surprise many Americans visiting Scandinavia are the differences in food items available to begin with - for example, the sheer variety (and existence) of roe and caviar and seafood based food items (roe and caviar is not common in America), much less foods in tubes. So maybe the types of foods common to Scandinavia versus other regions plays a factor (and those foods just happened to be particularly tubable, so tubing was a better fit for Scandinavia foods in particular to begin with?). Also, I wonder how metal food tube packaging is recycled having food residue on / in it, but that’s a topic for another day. 🙂 Edit: other obvious reasons commenters are citing for the tubing popularity is: super convenient - just the right amount, and no need for utensils, no added mess or clean up, and super portable / backpackable for work and active lifestyles - hiking, skiing, etc., keeps the product clean, and probably the best / most Important: you can write your name on bread with it. - That last one must’ve been the main reason all along! 😁🤣😂

Yes exactly, once here in Indonesia we have a tubed condensed milk but nobody uses it. Idk why, like it's so convenient.. but the crowd prefers the canned ones because that's the only thing they know.. so a product that is more known to use around the house is more often to be picked than the one that was efficient and innovative, yet is unknown and left the people unsure to chose it.

I was wondering about the part played by the cost and availability of the raw materials for packaging. Should’ve considered that as the primary driver first as that industry is what would’ve seen the opportunity first and capitalized on it.

It's flexible too and offers an almost instant visual status of how much product remains. Good job Sweden.

I've come across quite a few of them in Norway & I think most are delicious. But I watched the video because I wanted to get a researched answer to its title for the reason of their existence and popularity. There was nothing about that & I've never seen another video from this excellent channel with such a wrong title.

We have the tube cheese in the UK too- it's sold under the brand Primula and you can get it with ham or smoked flavour too. We also do garlic puree and tomato puree in tubes here. Very convenient for adding as much as your heart desire's when cooking!

  • @StuartCuthbertson

I'm so glad someone else already said this. My reaction to this as a Brit was like "uhh, we do foods in tubes here too?". Primula isn't exactly something everyone buys but I think of it as distinctly British, not some weird foreign idea. Granted, we don't get fish in a tube, but I think that's perhaps more to do with Scandinavia's general love of fish.

I've always loved the Swedish Cheese in a tube, it's a good comfort food for cheese lovers, but since I'm not based in Sweden, it's expensive and hard to get, so I'll just get them once in a while, maybe Christmas or a special occasion.

I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR IT, THAT KALLES KAVIAR! They used to come with a yellow color tubes back in 2010-ish or 2012, i was around age 10 or 11 back then My parents used to have symposiums in Europe and when they got back, they bring these fish paste like, 10 to 12 tubes, so a lot of them. I used to have my school lunch with them as the paste eaten with plain bread, IT WAS DELICIOUS I've been looking for it forever, Thank You for reminding me with this, ohh what a memory!

I bought tomato paste in a tube. So handy! The canned version is a hassle. Once you open it, you have to use it all or dig it out and store the rest in the refrigerator. The tube lets you use it whenever you want without doing all that.
