    No. The reason the sugar starts to turn white isn't because of dead skin. It's because you're constantly folding it back and forth. You're introducing microscopic bubbles in it. They do the same thing with making candy in shops. Plain sugar starts amber, and turns white as they pull it on the hook.

    Just to clear a few things here... While sugaring is a fantastic alternative to other methods, some things are being misspoken. 1. The paste is NOT seeping into the follicle. The follicle is actually a small sack of cells surrounding the root of the hair and is located in the dermis layer of the skin, above which is the epidermis layer *on top* of which the sugar paste is applied. So the paste is just really good at grabbing individual hairs when pulled off by a professional. 2. The paste changes "color" (it changes appearance) for the same reason sugar candy mass changes appearance when being mixed and kneaded by a candy machine - more and more air bubbles are being trapped so the paste turns opaque. This has been pointed out by others as well.

    Ok imma say this as someone who makes sugar paste and uses it (btw it’s rlly easy to do and SOOO much cheaper than going to a salon.) the color change is due to both dead skin AND air bubble. If u soak a used ball of the sugar paste in a glass of hot water, u will see this white film form on the top of the water. That is dead skin cells. It’s kinda like if u have ever put a piece of tape on ur skin and then pull it off; u see these white specks on it and it’s not as sticky as before. It’s like that!

    This lady is so full of hyperbole that I can't believe Refinery29 didn't do their due diligence as journalists before posting this video. 1. Laser uses the same type of "radiation" that we use when it comes to things like seeing in COLOR, or the sort of infrared radiation used in remote controls. 2. Sugaring does not "seep into" the hair follicle. It sits on top of it, same as soft wax. It also adheres to skin. 3. It does not "turn" a color because it's gathering dead skill cells. It's oxygenation and the fact that it's cooling down. 4. She's TERRIBLE at this. She's having to go back multiple times, which you shouldn't have to do with a good sugaring technique. 5. The only real pro to sugaring vs soft wax is that it's easier to wash off. The reason that's a pro is because, as I mentioned above - it DOES adhere to skin. 6. It's no easier on your skin because it requires more "passes" to get all of the hair off. The lemon can in fact cause MORE irritation. I personally use hard wax because it doesn't catch the skin. This is so irresponsible of R29 to post and this lady should stop making false claims.

    I personally think refinery29 don’t do much research on what they put out in the internet. They once did a a video about skin lighting in the Philippines and made it way more dramatic and made it sound way more harmful then what it really was. And I know this because I live in the Philippines and have Filipino friends and I’ve lived in the Philippines for 5 years already. They were basically shitting on doctor Vikki Belo making her look like a corrupt dermatologist that only wants money. They literally made it look like the skin whitening products in the Philippines were dangerous but in reality they aren’t. The ones that were actually dangerous were the cheap whitening creams illegally shipped from China. There had not been even ONE case in the Philippines about Philippine whitening products being dangerous

    Hard wax and sugaring gave me the same results. People say sugaring is better but I honestly think hard wax is better and way faster thang sugaring . With surgaring they are constantly pulling the hair out and it’s constant pain for one spot . Hard wax you can lay the wax in different spots which makes is faster and rip them off individually and the pressure to get a break from the constant pain . Also sugaring cost more than regular hard wax . The only pro to sugaring for me is it’s all natural . *but this is just my opinion and my experience, everyone is different*

    I like this comment, and I agree they both give the same result. Though I went in the direction of sugaring, and just wanted to share why I chose that in case someone else is like me. For me, waxing is harder because no matter what (after all of this time doing it) it takes a long time for me, and I almost always end up at this point of failure where there’s a strip of wax stuck to me for a while and then I have to stop after I’ve tired myself out getting the wax off. I know this is just my own failure in waxing, I’m just bad at it lol (and I have used the smoother, blue wax beads and have still run into this situation). The main reason I am picking sugar wax is that when I get to this point of failure and the wax is stuck to me, I can easily wash it all off in a few minutes of hot water instead of the 20-30 minutes of frustration fighting with a strip of hard wax because I’m just generally bad at this. So, to anyone else who gets wax stuck to yourself regularly, I say to try the switch over to sugar waxing (BUT DO RESEARCH ON SUGAR WAX TECHNIQUE SO YOU DON’T BRUISE YOURSELF).

I've heard myths that after a while it sort of stretches your akin because of the pulling, but I doubt that. our women have been using it forever.

    I'm seeing so many things wrong in this video - sugar waxing your skin isn't any more natural than shaving! How is using lemons and sugar, both of which have been cultivated and modified over generations (just slow gmo), any more natural than using a razor, which is literally just metal..... the refining of sugar to be able to use it in these recipes isn't natural, cooking sugar to the softball stage isn't natural, and waxing your legs at all isn't natural??? Also, the sugar doesn't turn white because of dead skin, it turns white as it aerated from all of the whipping and churning that happens when rubbing it on your legs, folding it over, then rubbing it again. I'm absolutely for sugar waxing, but NOT for businesses preying on a small, gullible market of people trying to be environmentally conscious

  • @JBHomemadeLLCPortland

    @JBHomemadeLLCPortland

    6 жыл бұрын

    @Mageneated - though it is more environmentally conscious - when shaving you might use shaving cream (chemicals rinsed down the drain) & your razors are sent to landfills. Your bottles of shaving cream or gel are sent to landfills. When sugaring, you're not using any chemicals to rinse down the drain to our water sources and nothing is sent to landfills. In my opinion, this is what she may have meant. The cornstarch/powder and dead skin cells do play a part in the change of color - not the only reason for the change of color, but they do play a role in combination with the aeration.

    You should try to make sugar wax at home, if u don't live in a hot country. Lots of diy on youtube. It's fairly cheap to try out (lemon juice, sugar, a bit of water + maybe some salt), because prices for sugaring can range from fairly okay to high, and lots of salons claim to have 'natural' sugars, but there's still chemical ingredients and conservatives in them. They usually don't make it themselves. I tried it twice, first time i succeeded in making them, second time I tried to use apple cider vinegar instead of lemon juice, but that was a bad idea. Just be aware that your pan will be a sticky mess, and don't let it go too far, otherwise it becomes caramel or burns/ruins your pan. U can also eat it :p Also: start practicing on legs first. And apply lots of sunscreen with spf 50 (u should do that after sugaring anyway) on waxed area's.

    I do not understand what the fuss is about. The wax that has been used in India and other Asian countries is always made of sugar syrup and lime/lemon juice. It is just that we spread it using a spatula and still use a cloth to pull the wax, like in regular waxing.

    I'm sure it's exfoliating, but the reason the ball of sugar starts to look opaque is because as it gets worked and kneaded, it starts to get lots of little trapped air bubbles. If you've ever seen hard candy get pulled the old-fashioned way, you'll see them kneading it anytime they want to make white.
