Doogle Ticker Don't be an ass, he obviously wasn't saying other people are pussies for not being in a submarine. But you've got a lot better chance of survival if your surface ship is sunk vs. if your submarine is. Not to mention the potential for getting stuck or damaged without even receiving enemy fire. Read some of the horror stories of people who have survived sub disasters or were just forced to stay submerged for days at a time, I'll take a bullet over the torture of that.

They should have put all their men on deck, after having armed them with gas-pipes and any other sort of junk, RAISE A BLACK, PIRATE FLAG and announce through a megafone, they'll board the destroyer. That would certainly scare the enemy off.

Naw, destroyers have deck guns, machine guns, and small arms (no not to paddle). British subs enter home port with that illegal pirate flag flying after a kill(s). They are rad, non-conformist, nut-jobs...that's what is needed to be a submariner. Woof.

Modern boats use sound and wire guidance for their torpedoes. Those were not available in WW2 and the MK 14 were not reliable at first. Any change in the angle on the bow or speed of target makes a difference between a hit or miss. These folks in the old boats were brave and had to know what they were doing. DBF . . . . . when I was in, 50 years ago, the doctrine was "fire" was an actual command to launch the torpedo. (or fire the gun) All preparatory language was "prepare to shoot" etc, so as not to cause a mistake, even though all commands had to be repeated, in a tense situation shit happens. "Fire" was also a casualty. Ditto for surface ships in the US at the time. Respectfully submitted.

The torp hit the bow, and the sub dives beneath it, so why not depth charge the sub?

I would have got close before I fired my first torpedo and unless I calculated its range distance, I'm not going to fire in such rapid succession, maybe he had to be there but that's just my thinking

Mind you, this was WWII technology and tactics. Modern torpedo targeting and guidance are far more accurate, but so is anti-submarine warfare. In modern submarine tactics a single shot, while in theory can be done within a few minutes, may more likely take hours to prepare (patience is not just a virtue when you don't want to be seen, it is a life-or-death necessity, and you have to maneuver slowly to guarantee both the hit and your survival) and an engagement may even take days in outmaneuvering your opponent.

The only way you are almost guaranteed to sink a destroyer. What was left out was the turn 10 degress to avoid collision.

Hedy Lamar, the Jewish actress, actually designed a torpedo guidance system to counter the Germans during the U-boat crisis in the Atlantic. When the Germans learned how to jam the system she also designed a system to scramble the remote signal. There's a good documentary about it somewhere....
