Why Straight-A Students Never Rise to the Top & Rethinking Education Ft. Jamus Lim |

Комедия

Jamus Lim comes to the YLB studio for a deep dive into the Singapore education system and what Singaporeans need to do in their careers to prepare for the impending AI wave. On top of that, he talks about his expectations vs. reality as an MP (no jokes about cockles, we promise), redefining what it means to succeed in Singapore, and also destroys Terence’s One Shiok Thing with economics.

The irony of a Singaporean’s mindset about education system is that locals cannot afford to fail (according to their expectations) and yet with little failure, they can’t learn from few mistakes and become not so resilient and wise. 😅 Some students with straight A grades throughout their lives will be in shock when faced with life’s problems and there’s no model answer they can grab and make use of.

We have always been taught that Singapore is small and our only natural resources is our people. And that Singapore is a financial hub, enjoys political & economic stability, highest level of safety, citizens are well educated and impose the lowest tax in all of developed countries. All these is to engineer more foreign investments. And these foreign investments needed workers for their operations. The education system is strategically planned to meet all these expectations, which unfortunately means either you change yourself to fit into the system, fall out of the system & feed on scraps or you find some place where they have multiple systems running.

Well, I've also learn to accept that sg is status quo to survice. Not much we can do to change that. What I can't accept is that since we didn't choose to be born here, we should deserve a choice. And the govt should help us relocate to countries with a slower pace of life and can accept those who have fallen through Singapore's cracks. That way we don't need to try and change Singapore to fit those who can't keep up and survive within the system but we get a better life overseas. Who knows ? We develop something that could benefit Singapore economically while overseas we can be welcomed back to contribute in future? Example cited by Jamus is Taylor Swift as her talent wasn't developed locally. The possibilities are endless.

If we can't challenge the incumbent trend of thought, it limits our view of reality. This means that we have a narrower vision of possibilities. If the Wright brothers had given up on the then ludicrous idea of flying we wouldn't have aviation and we'd probably miss half the prosperity we have in Singapore.

I think as seen throughout history there will still be that steady stream of students who dont do well but retain that spark of creativity and innovation. Think of all the dropout that go on to start successful local business. Yes more emphasis can be placed. But i think as it is the situation is not that dire. Education systems are also starting to shift the emphasis to broad based learning.

Great Channel! I have a small request. Would you talk about the 13mth jail sentence given to the Money Launderer who laundered $3Billion? If my understanding of the sentence is correct, is it too lenient and would it embolden future launderers? Compare to sentence given to someone who stole say $100m or less. Is there a big difference? If someone laundered $100m, does he get 30 times less jail time? I don't think so, but asking😅 What's your views on fine$ which is the same given to the rich and the poor for the same offence when the rich are not affected financially by fines but the poor are. Why do the majority who are not the Rich having no issue with this? Fines do not deter the rich as much as the poor. To some rich people, they may find that the small fines allow them to commit offence by just paying for fines. Like buying the right to commit offence?😅

What I'm getting at from Jamus is that the education system should support the notion "You can do what you like and make a living", which is something I disagree after entering the workforce. SG is a highly capitalistic economy and it's all about what is being demanded. For example, it is very clear that doctors are more demanded than artists (the drawing kind) in SG. And this kind of demand is very much due to our own local market - since when you remember someone you know purchasing an expensive piece of art? So if the education system do not influence ppl to think that a med degree is more valuable than an art degree, there'll probably be an oversupply of artists which means a big fraction of them will not be able to make a living with their degree. Of cos this is just my opinion, and I'm not qualified to criticise an economics prof

I'm curious who are these countries that have pulled it off and currently stands with Singapore as the 2nd highest gdp per capita. 1) with no natural resources as backup $$ 2) With no cultural allies unlike luxembourg & norway where they have neighbouring countries to support their economy across border 3) Sustaining multi-racial community that works as a society without major dysfunction So why being wealthy and safe as a sovereign state is so important? - Majority of our $$ relies on foreign investments and HQs residing here to create quality jobs. They won't come if its a mediocre place. Jamus policy sounds great but it makes Singapore mediocre at the end. On theory its viable, but in reality singaporeans will never be content and it will spiral downwards. Being prudent Singapore is how we managed to thrive this far. 1 mediocre policy means theres no going back. No one can undo a systemic issue. I dont think there is a education system out there can specifically train nobel laurates. The education system can equip the student with many skills and then it is up for the student to be subjected to the factors of time, creativity, and inspiration moments to think out of the box and become a nobel laurate. Look here, nobel laurates are people who think outside of the box to create new knowledge. The education system can only go as far to encourage you to think out of the box or at most equip you with some skills on how to think outside the box and then the rest is up to the person to put it into practice. So, it is not the Singaporean education system that is at fault (but there is still room for improvement). or rather , when time factor get pulled longer and more patience are exercised, a nobel laurate will emerge from the local universities?

Is it self respecting if we have to live in constant self censorship out of fear? Do we respect ourselves as free man?
