Notably, the first parade (1917) was over half a century after the 1840s famine. Many Irish had already moved across the Midwest and Great Plains. Those still on the seaboard had already established themselves in both enclaves and local government. Assimilation, or more accurately cultural diffusion since Irish culture heavily influenced the US as well, takes time.

Why do you show a modern day map of North and South Ireland @ 0.42 when you talk of emigration? Emigration happened way back when the entire land of Ireland was a single country governed by Great Britain. Emigration was also a consequence of how they governed the country through religious and political suppression and a landlord system of induced poverty, principally by British landlords.

St.Patrick's Day is only an official holiday in Ireland and Montserrat. All the other places it's unofficial, Americans do their marching at the weekend. If you fly the Irish tricolour the wrong way round on the flagpole you have the flag of Côte d'Ivoire.

It went global because of the Irish diaspora romanticising Ireland and capitalising from it. Nothing you see on St Patrick's Day is genuine Irish culture, St Patrick's Day is originally a religious holiday to celebrate Catholicism spreading to Ireland.

“St Patrick’s Day as we know it was invented in America”. Only a British magazine could come up with this cynical tripe. St Patrick’s Day has been a religious and secular day of celebration among the Irish for centuries. Whether the our Irish contingent in the US added marching bands to it is irrelevant- the feast day of St Patrick AND the communal celebrations are much much older than the United States. I get that the Economist was just trying to put an economic history spin on things, but this is a very poor advertisement for its journalism. Which in this case is third rate at best.

"no mention of why the Irish were forced to migrate" She does mention it, but probably takes her account from English history books-she calls it a "famine" instead of the genocide it was. My English friends were amazed and shocked when I showed them how Ireland had plenty of food at the time the potato failed, but the English continued exporting the rest while starving 1M+ of the native population to death and forcing another 1M+ to emigrate. There's never been a mention of this in English secondary school history books, altho it is apparently acknowledged in University-level history. Same can be said about Churchill's 1943 Bengal genocide, and countless others. Anyone with doubts who wants to do quick research, I suggest checking out Sir Charles Trevelyan.
