Why SpaceX’s StarHopper will never go to space

Ғылым және технология

SpaceX is building a massive massive new rocket down in Boca Chica Texas that will never make it to space. No, this isn’t clickbait, this particular rocket will never go to space. Because it’s not designed to.
This is just a hopper version of their upcoming starship, that some people are calling StarHopper, and at first, this thing will likely only fly a few meters at most. But don’t get me wrong, of course when the actual Starship goes online, I fully expect it to make it to space!
So today we’re going to do a quick history on SpaceX’s previous fleet of hoppers, why they build them, what this one is going to accomplish and then we’ll build a version in Kerbal Space Program and demonstrate what we’ll hopefully see the StarHopper do in 2019!

    @@CarlosAM1 I think both he and I know about SpaceX. I clicked it because I assumed he was referring to the actual rocket and was making assumptions based on the star hopper. This is click bait. I clicked it assuming I would hear an opinion of why the new rocket would not make it to space. Coming here assuming the creator is well informed, why would he make a video stating the obvious about the hopper; therefore he must be referring to the actual rocket. Hence, Clickbait.

    SpaceX has never actually called the BFR the Big Falcon Rocket. It obviously means Big F***ing Rocket, but the community kindly changes the F to Falcon. And now (probably for branding reasons) the ship portion is called Starship and the booster is called Super Heavy. But in our hearts, it will always be BFR, until they make a bigger one.

    If the offset is that bad, would it be more likely that there would just be two failure modes? Either the middle engine can be lost and the outer two remain operational or an outer one goes out and then only the center one would get used. My understanding is that the Raptor design is supposed to optimize for 100% and ~30% thrust at sea level so that one engine could do all the work. I mean, this only makes sense if the risk of an off-center thrust is higher than being on one engine.

  • @Scteam2000

    @Scteam2000

    5 жыл бұрын

    I don't know if only the center one can be used. I was thinking this myself but I dunno if a single engine has enough thrust to put it down gently. We're talking about stainless steel here, it isn't light, and even with the sheer power of the Raptor, I don't think one will cut it (especially on the bigger version). If the offset is bad because of an outer engine failure, my theory is that, because of the fact that the outer ring on the larger design will have 6 engines, 3 of the outer ones can fire so there's still symmetry and there's still the 3 engines firing. The only problem with this is whether or not they can switch to this mode on a dime, because when you're landing on another planet, any sort of hesitation can kill you.

    Scteam2000 some people have done the maths and a single raptor should have been enough to lift it off the Ground, which is why there was a short time with people being really confused about why it had 3

    @@ValentineC137 Oh really? That's my bad. That's actually very interesting. Looking at the thrust of a single Raptor engine, it does look like it's easily possible to get a better than 1-TWR. But for landing, you're gonna want to have more than 1.5-TWR for your maximum. With 100 tons of cargo along with the weight of the spacecraft/remaining fuel, I feel like this is the TWR you'd get when landing. On Mars, because of the lower Gravity, TWR might in all actuality be a bit higher, but I think my point should still stand. It's really about having that extra margin in the end. I'm no rocket scientist though, and without actually knowing the exact weight of the stainless steel version of the craft, I'm really just guesstimating.

  • @ValentineC137

    @ValentineC137

    Scteam2000 the single raptor being enough is strictly reffering to the starhopper, not the ship. With the starship however i’d guess they might do the same as with the F9 with the initial 3 engines burning and switching to a single one, with the added benefit of removing most velocity areodynamically. (But that could change if they’re trying to land with a 100ton payload, maybe they’d start with 3 engines and switch to 2?)

    Yep its the exact same situation as the grass hopper. This will act as the test-bed for Starship and i'm sure SpaceX will learn so much from these tests even though they wont make it to space! As much as SpaceX have totally nailed it with the Falcon 9, undertaking a venture of this size and complexity takes some doing and in essence you are starting to learn all over again so i'm delighted to see they are being so meticulous as always which is the SpaceX hallmark!
