Why Sonic Lost World Is Underrated

Ойындар

#sonic #sonicthehedgehog #soniclostworld
The Sonic series has a tendency to reinvent itself on a consistent basis, with 2013's Sonic Lost World persisting as one of the most bold examples of this routine to this day. The results of experimentation with Sonic's gameplay, art direction, and story writing in Lost World are somewhat incalculable... and with this, I revisit it continuously with nothing but fascination. Join me as we take a critical look into how Sonic Team's efforts transpired into not one of the hedgehog's best adventures, nor one of his worst, but one of his most intriguing to date.

While I'm not big on this game myself, I can see the appeal (the soundtrack is genuinely underrated), and the point you made in comparing the game to Colors was thought-provoking. It seems like the first game of any 3D Sonic gameplay style is the one where its vision is made the most clear, at least in terms of the Sonic portions. Anyways, I'm glad I could finally get around to watching this beefer; you did a really good job explaining your stance!

I'm surprised at how strangely "dark" the story is for how childish it feels... The Deadly Six say that their whole world is going to die, and they'll be dead too, and Sonic openly mentions Eggman wanting to commit genocide in a throwaway line.

I find this analysis to be incredibly well done especially when tackling the level design and moveset. I like how you called it throughout the review freedom on how to traverse rather than calling it non-linearity as many sonic fans mistakenly do. Sonic levels really aren't non linear at least not yet but what fans love about games like the classics and the adventure titles is that the moveset gives them freedom. Freedom to do a level faster, to avoid some obstacles, all while having a sense of style. You have shown throughout this review that Lost World allows for that same feeling due to its great level design and mechanics and it makes me very excited to eventually try the game. The spindash in particular looks like a joy to use. A point when it comes to the music. I was watching your review around 1:20 point when you played Sea Bottom Segue in the background. I recognized the track but couldn't remember where it was from. Since you played music from other series throughout the review I was eager to see if in the credits you said where it was from. But man when I was hearing it at that moment I got incredibly emotional and nostalgic for something I couldn't fully remember. When you told me when it was from Lost World later on I was very shocked. The track does not sound at all like traditional Sonic music but it's still incredible, and it's crazy to think I have this much of an emotional response from a track I only would've heard once while playing Lost World 3DS four years ago.

Thank you for such a thorough response, Ethen. I’m absolutely thrilled that I was able to display how Lost World allows for such freedom when you explore beyond the surface- I’m SO happy that came across and has made you excited to try the game! The soundtrack is so powerful, right!? Many genres are explored and therefore you have the opportunity for a piece like Sea Bottom Segue to sweep you over your feet. I love that piece very much, though Snowball Waltz is the one that absolutely hits me the most. :) Thanks for your support!

Excellent video! I stumbled upon this channel due to this video, and needless to say I was pleasantly satisfied with this analysis, leading me to ask why the amount of views is so slim. In my eyes, Lost World was enjoyable in short bursts. There are a plethora of different stage gimmicks throughout the campaign, some stuck the landing while others didn't. Due to this, I would have to constantly adjust to drastic gameplay shakeups. This campaign of scattered ideas also affects time attacking these stages, some were actually fun to optimize however stages like Tropical Coast Act 2 did not suit a time attack run in the slightest. Perhaps that's why I didn't think of this game too fondly, clearly Lost World desired something more foreign for the Sonic series, and with its radical gameplay shift it withdraws a few aspects I really enjoyed from other games. I'm still interested in giving this game another shot though, the sheer amount of creativity strewn within this gummi worm salad is remarkable. Also please tell me that the pool balls getting knocked on the beat at 1:59:58 was unintentional

Hey Evan, sorry it took this long for me to finish this video. It's good to see you back after all this time, your pacing is much better than before, the length felt way shorter than it was. I must admit this game has been on my mind a lot recently, with Frontiers going open world I can't help but feel like adapting the parkour from this game would fit really well in that format. I love the boost but it can be restrictive not just because of it not really being suited to platforming but because of the amount of resources it takes to make one level. Frontiers is certainly the most ambitous thing they've done it a while and that alone has me looking forward to it but I do think the boost limits the scope of what can be done. Replaying the game with a more comfortable controller on PC has made me appreciate what the game has to offer more. Lost World is a game I respect as a polished game mechanically, the artstyle and music I adore. It's just the level design isn't my cup of tea, not bad, I understand what it was going for in the same way the ranking points based system in SA2 and Heroes really jives with me but not others. That being said, watching speedruns I have always thought the parkour had a ton of potential and hope that one day they can refine it.

Thank you, Jack! As an enthusiast and a friend, it's lovely to hear your thoughts on Frontiers and Lost World. You always have so much to bring to the table -- and I agree, Frontiers could benefit from taking elements like the parkour. It really is nice to see a level of ambition again, and that's something I can't even say Lost World has... but it's the small details, the *thoughtfulness* of the design in Lost World that makes it worth appreciating, even when not one's cup of tea!

Guess who's back, back again! I've never played this game myself, but picked up on a bit through osmosis. I must say though, I didn't know there was so much to the games story, especially after the game seemed so jovial and straightforward from what I could tell given the simplistic level themes and the Mario design philosophy. Fun fact: The first time I heard Sea Bottom Segue was in Turnabout Podcast, and it introduced me to a piece I'd go back and listen to on my own time occasionally. Leave it to Sonic for music that'll stick with you... An excellent review. Your commentary and editing have come a long, long way in these last few years.

My perspective on the whole Sonic-Tails-Eggman argument thing isn't exactly in lockstep with the rest of the community, because I generally take Tails' side. Tails is canonically... smarter than Eggman. The games since _Heroes_ have also been steadily casting doubt on Eggman's own skills, with frequent betrayals from his own creations, recurring malfunctions, two bumbling lackeys that mainly exist to highlight his incompetence, and the hard swerve into comedy in the 2010s causing Sonic to lose all respect for Eggman's threat and spend all of their interactions ribbing him and calling him a failure. Meanwhile, the game establishes Tails as having achieved several outright impossible feats in the field of engineering. In fact, in the same time frame that Eggman has been reduced to a clown with some robot factories, Tails has likewise been flanderised. Starting with the Sonic X anime in 2003, SEGA have gradually boiled away all of Tails' traits and abilities besides technology. He doesn't fight or go on adventures anymore, he hides behind rocks and plays with his iPad while needing Sonic's help to breathe. Pretty sure the only reason SEGA still have him fly with his tails is that it's easier to animate than him walking. But his brainpower has ballooned to absurd levels. And yet, the first time in at least a decade where the answer to a game's plot is technology, Sonic immediately turns around and asks _Eggman_ to help instead of turning to his actually reliable friend. The notion that Tails is smarter than Eggman isn't just an implication or a text-blurb in a manual anymore, it's explicit within the text. Moreover, the story never actually justifies them needing Eggman to operate the machine. The fact that the Zeti (who _aren't_ tech geniuses) can operate it by themselves proves that it really is just as simple as pushing some buttons and pulling a lever, and the game expects us to believe that not only is Eggman vital to this very easy task, but that Sonic decides to follow this idea instead of even considering that his best friend, who is _smarter than Eggman,_ can do it. If they'd added an element that Eggman built it in a weird way that only he can safely decipher, and the Zeti can only use it because Red Bowser paid very close attention to the activation process before, or even have them capture Orbot and use their tech control powers to make him operate it for them, then yeah, I'd buy that. But they don't do that. They show the process of using the machine to be as simple as operating a cash register at a supermarket and then turn around and go "Sonic needs his dumber-than-his-own-sidekick archnemesis to resolve this!" And then Sonic didn't need Eggman to resolve it anyway.

I played this game on my Wii U, but the final boss just kept glitching out so the fight became unwinnable. Basically, there’s the part where you stun him, then you’re supposed to homing attack up his arm and hit his head to advance the fight, but for whatever reason, Sonic wouldn’t ever lock on to his arm no matter what I tried, so there was nothing I could do. I tried absolutely everything, but nobody online had the same issue as me and no combination of buttons would ever work to defeat him, so that was that. One time I got lucky and the homing lock actually worked, but that only happened one time out of dozens and dozens of attempts. After all these years, did *anyone* else have this problem??

Also I know this is a Nitpick, but there is one thing in the story that really annoys me. In the shattered crystal prologue comic it shows that Lyric was locked away by the other ancients for 5000 years. My problem is that it never explains how Lyric escaped his imprisonment. In rise of Lyric Sonic accidentally freed him but shattered Crystal and fire and ice share continuity with the cartoon and rise of lyric is definitely not the same universe as the show. So it’s just never revealed how we escaped which I feel like is kind of important

Honestly Kiryu from Yakuza should be SEGA's mascot instead of Sonic because I am not really a Sonic fan if being honest, I find his 90's attitude annoying and grading, obnoxious support characters, stories that feel like something out of a fanfic and shoehorns gimmicks down people's throats and just doesn't stick to one formula. Meanwhile the Yakuza series has actually been sticking to its formula since the first game and has a great story, fun and likeable characters, Fun and Engaging gameplay, beautiful visuals and actually feels like something with a lot of passion put into it while Sonic just feels like a soulless cash grab. It's just frustrating since Yakuza is practically SEGA's most interesting and yet people on KZread rather talk SEGA's less interesting franchise which just disappointing.
