Interesting reflection. For me, the hardest part of Sales was having to work with clients who were obviously very stupid or thought highly of themselves. Terribly frustrating.

"as a salesperson you are the customers bridge between the problem and the solution" .....how true!

Man I felt this so hard. I’m also an engineer who went into sales. I went in extremely confident because I had both the analytical skills as well as strong communication skills, and figure I’d be a shoe in for tech sales. The first 2 months were a brutal reality check. 0 meetings booked first month, and 2nd month, the one meeting I booked cancelled and ghosted. Meanwhile, the SDRs who had no technical experience, who had weaker communication skills than me, and many of whom didn’t even have high proficiency with English were destroying me. They just had a complete emotional detachment from the outcome, kept their messaging simple, and kept their conversations short. They were knocking out 30 calls a day, not wasting time trying to convince people and sticking to the script. I was quickly humbled, and learned a lot from that job, which I was eventually fired from 😂😂😂.

Holy shit this is so true. I dont think I'm particularly smart but iv always been an A+ or A student. Ive been an SDR for a little more than a year and it has been so difficult. I spent so much time in research, reading about our product features, drafting strategic emails that my outbound numbers were low which lead to me missing quota. Management still saw something in me and kept pushing me to pound the phones but i HATED the calling + eat what u kill culture. I'm now upskilling and shifting into product

I have a really low IQ and I suck at sales. I must be doomed.

This makes sense. Sales is interpersonal and psychological, and for a person that believes that rationality can solve all problems won't be able to truly understand people. Extremely rational people believe all people should be rational at all times, instead of seeing people for who they are and adjusting to the irrationality of human nature.

Thank you for sharing. I completely relate to this. I would regard myself as highly intelligent but am frozen with over analysis. I'm trying to build my own business but I'm really struggling to get off the ground with sales even though I know all the theory. My niche are also typically "unintelligent" and difficult which makes the paralysis even harder.

Hi Eric, I'm currently looking to break into sales, previously I had engineering background but as of right now I'm working as rep estimator what are the best areas or point that I should study on first to increase my chances of doing it?

Aside from KZread videos you need to network and apply to jobs, that is the fastest way. Don't get caught in the trap of studying so much that you don't actually take action, you can learn on the job. If you have an engineering background you'll be fine. Have you started applying?

I recently got a referral from a COO/co-founder of a AI startup that finished its series B raising. I think the interview went well but haven't heard back from the head of sales since. Do you think it's good to get a referral from a COO/co-founder? Role is for an AE

  • @techsales-higherlevels

Exposure. If you're not in sales and want to get there, ask people in your network for a coffee to learn more about sales, etc... even asking for that in the first place will be uncomfortable if you have no experience. Also getting interview experience is the best scenario, but there are many things you can do before then. Where are you at in your sales journey?
