Problem here is people confuse Skill and Experience, with Time, so to them you’re only given up a couple of hours maybe, but it’s the skill and experience what we’re paying for, not paying for your time, if that makes any sense.

Finally. Another dad who talks to his kids like I do. I am 48 and but still got it, just about. I went to the gym with my then 26 yr old lad, after out lifting him on everything we did, while in the sauna he has the minerals to tell me I am on the decline. Brutal! Proud of the lad though, turned into a fine man. Favourite channel at the moment, keep doing what you do.

Freebies, I hate them. I had an exclusive Australian distribution agreement with a US company and I received a phone call offering to do a YT review on the product which seems like a fair deal so I agreed. When I told the caller that I wanted the product returned he got all offended and said he should be allowed to keep it so I told him to take a walk and don't call back. He had equipped his workshop doing this sort of thing and I was not going to help him add to that. Unhappy with my response he contacted the US office and told them the same story and I then agreed as they offered to reimburse me for the stuff I sent him and the final result was a huge blow up between him and them with me sitting on the sidelines saying I told you so. 99% of the YT reviews are done to get free product, nothing more or less.

As United fan you'll get this. I know a major stadium lighting brand got asked for a meeting at Old Trafford to disscuss replacing the floodlights with LEDs. United senior management were put out when told the cost, they said 'no wer're not paying, you do the work and pay us £5M'!!! The Chief Exec who was a United fan got up and walked away from the deal.

I new mistakes that cause problems. When my brother and I were Grasstrack racing ( an outfit). We were up until 4am fixing a new exhaust system that went across the front of the sidecar. Little did we notice the exhaust was lower than the sidecar. We went to Bidenden Grasstrack got to the second corner exhaust dug it. Outfit back wheel went up about 70 degrees I ( the passenger ) ended up wrapped around the handholds my brother head butted the front wheel…

I think my crowning glory of fuckups was 2004 when we ran 4 top fuel dragsters in European FIA competition. I was doing the bottom end of the motor on one (Smax Smith driving), and someone asked me a question while I was getting ready to put #5 rear main cap back up. Torqued everything, pan back on, oil in for the warm up and then I got called to one of the other cars to fix ignition wiring issues. Hear the car firing up for warmup, but it was quite short duration. Then a few minutes later Smax the driver appears going “Rob! Rob! We started up and there’s oil pissing out the clutch can dust filter!”. I go back with him, and the crazy Swedish team owner is looking like fire and muttering “There’s no rear main seal in that motor”. I’m thinking no… there’s no way. So the clutch guys set about removing the can and cleaning up (thankfully no oil went onto the clutch itself), and i go and look in my tool tray and find… the lower half of the rear main seal. As I’d stretched out from under the car when asked the question earlier, the cap on the slide hammer had tilted over enough for the seal to fall out into the tool tray, and I’d merrily banged the cap back up into place after answering the question. Oh dear. Thankfully nothing damaged other than my pride!

Think I was about 10 - the first time I got on a Moto-x bike. My dad had bought himself a secondhand Maico 250 circa '74 vintage. The 1st outing was on waste ground in Trafford Park, Manchester - before they built the Trafford Centre over it! Anywhoo... after my dad had had a frap round it was my turn. Right lad, sit on it, clutch in 1st gear - give it some revs let the clutch out and you're off! - He wasn't wrong either. Straight off the back, full send wheelie and me sat in a pile of toxic mud watching the bike bounce a.o.t. across the waste ground. Only hurt my ego a little and I went on to have 5 or 6 years in schoolboy moto-x - great times, some success, only one fractured ankle and no regrets, except having to give up when I got too old for schoolboy class. No your lad ain't getting rich anytime soon, but he'll have a blast trying 😶‍🌫😃

25:00 this is something that's been happening on and on since 2020. The one that created the most uproar was when Mr JWW ('s media manager) asked Litchfield to build up his Yaris, pay him £25k for the privilege and a percentage of future Litchfield suspension sales. Like Iain is a nice guy but that "offer" was handled as it should have been. If not for Chris Harris blowing the lid off of it, we'd have never known.

The reason I watch this is out of the throw to Mat A when I saw RE on his channel and I watch this more. That was an example of Mat and Ricky being collaborative but just to achieve an end goal. The only car magazine that will sell nowadays is 'Top 10 Fucking expensive lease cars while you're living at home with mum and dad'. There's less and less 'low budget' modification nowadays. It's not the fun thing it used to be. Glad the subs are going up and it certainly seems to be doing your brand in Audi engines no harm. It's a slow grow and looks like a fair bit of effort but is very interesting nonetheless Just don't give your son a MA 'HWBT' tshirt when you beat him at mx.......:D

Biggest near disaster in the last few years…. Built a brand new race bike. Absolutely mint. The bike sat at the back of my single garage behind my car. Which meant everytime I needed to get the bike out, I had to move the car (Aston Martin). Early morning to get away to the track. Started the Aston up and pulled out of the garage… forgetting the charger was still plugged in to the car… the plug came flying out of the wall, snagged the bike and absolute Armageddon occurred in my rear view mirror 😂 Bike went flying, along with everything else around it. Missed the back of the Aston by literally 2 inches. Poo was Poo’d. Also, glad you’re on planet Earth regarding Instagram helmets that want freebies.

Yes other businesses do get people wanting freebies or discounts. I run A DJ business ( mainly Weddings). I get it all the while "We're doing a charity gig, can you work for free and you'll get loads of referrals from it". The thing with referrals is they are generally like for like I.e. if I DJ a wedding and a friend of the bride is getting married in the future I'll get recommended. A long time back when I did kids parties, say I did a 10th birthday. At that party there will be several 9 year olds soon turning 10 so I used to do kids party and get 2 or 3 off the back of it. So if I do a free gig, guess what? I'll get recommended to all the other people wanting a freebie. Also these "charity" events they may sell tickets for say £50 or run a raffle. So the guests are donating say £50, by working for free I'm donating a few hundred quid. Takes the pee don't it mate.

Doing a collab might get you more subscribers and views, and might get you some more budget to offset the cost of doing youtube. It is up to you to figure out who to collab with and under what conditions. As you say, just being popular doesn't pay bills, but sometimes it is worth it to put some effort and even money in a collab, wether it is in the form of a discount you give or even pay someone for it, because you have a decent chance of making more back with the result.

I remember my first MX bike a 1975 yz 125The guy i bought it helped me to get it running. The trottle wire was badly routed. No clutch and no brakes. He was test driving the vehicle and it got stuck full trottle. The guy jumped of the bike and the bike damage a garage door .the cops let it slide but the insurance company tried to bill me for a new door. I was 15 years old not working i ignored the bill and yeah it was fine..

I get messages on a weekly basis looking for sponsorship or free body kits from our company but very little people realise its part time for me and my mate, its also a hobby and we make very little from each sale. I think it might be an age thing? I'm 40 and would never contemplate going straight into a company looking for discounts or free gear, I'm lucky that the tuning company I use and local motor factors know that I would recommend them so they do give me discount on some products or services but I'm always willing to pay what I'm due. As for the KZread/Instagram fame its 100% the younger generation who think that offering to post about you in exchange for free gear is acceptable and you will get famous from it. I don't think it helps there are loads of massive brands doing it for some people especially lifestyle kind of stuff

Great vid but I wish the focusing was better. I thought all those type of focusing issues went out with the ark. It feels like I'm in the opticians and he's swapping the lenses over 😂

I sell designer clothing online - random one I know. Constantly get hounded for free stuff for reposts etc ~ it’s come from the Instagram ‘get stuff for free’ influencer generation. Unfortunately that’s just the modern form of advertising, however I totally agree with you in terms of the cheek of it, blows me away 😂

Said it before and i'll say it again. You're a (successful) business owner who happens to post videos regularly. Leave the social media bs in the dumpster where it belongs! Keep posting the mechanical mayhem! I wish you'd shown us the diablo(?) engine rebuild but i guess the owner said no?

I once got stuck behind a "youtuber" in Madame Tussauds. Apparently because he had a "million subscribers" he could spend as long as he liked videoing and sod other paying customers. Couldn't be bothered to mention if the programmes on the TV channel I was involved in only had one million viewers they would be cancelled.

Totally agree with you’re rant however saying KZread isn’t a career path is a tad silly when as you say your close friend Mat Armstrong is literally making obscene money from Ad revenue and brand deals. Wether they speak about it or not I have a friend in the space with 4m+ subscribers and he’s being paid £60k for a 60 seconds ad in a video

These cock up emails are good 35 years in the trade Ive made my fair share of cockups and I still beat myself up about them BUT listening to some of those stories I shouldn't be so hard on myself! Lessons learnt,,,, I NEVER leave a fastener loose. I use a lot of paint especially when building an engine, fastener tightened, paint applied and I could never be a TT mechanic and I would Still be checking the wheel spindle nuts and brake bolts half way down bray hill much the rider's consternation

Oh and another thing, if you give away stuff on social media, the result might just be that there will be a line around the corner in the street of people that also want free stuff.

Not wide of the mark at all. This is the mindset of the instagram / you tube generation who think that their media presence deserves free stuff ( to their advantage of course) . Wouldn’t give them the time of day.
