Instead of a workshop update..take one car that comes in..and show what you do from the time it comes in till the time it leaves. The actual work done on cars is what makes great content. Show what your boys are doing...not just a 'Mats taking an engine out...... show what he is actually doing .... love the channel and the rants

Ricky, 'KZread' is all about ego.... your business has definitely benefitted from the channel, that is a fact from the long booking lead time that you have. Do not beat yourselves up over viewer ratings & which content is best... l am a lifelong vehicle tech & do not own a Lambo or R8, but enjoy your channel because you are knowledgeable, straight up & honest, which is why you have a good reputation. Don't ever drop your standards, look after good staff, & you will grow. I think the goal with 'KZread' is to get it standing on its own feet first, & when you stop enjoying it, scale it back. Your passion is your business, not your 'ego' with viewer ratings👍.

Retired mechanic here. Personally I want to watch exactly what you guys are doing... It reminds me of being in the shop and the BSing shit that happens throughout the day. I think if you personally built/tuned a R8/Lambo or a McLaren from start to finish it would increase your viewer base.

Yeah keep the general opinion pieces but the channel will grow like mad with the addition of skid factory like coverage of full builds your technical knowledge and creativity with problem solving is obviously what you have to give but it’s the smallest part of the channel currently and should be the largest.

The thing is is they are such a small team, and did you see how many R8s lambos and mclarens are waiting to be fixed, can you imagine, the fact he is doing these lil videos, but I totally agree with the original comment, but thing is he does top work and is obviously in demand so, I've no doubt that if the Rick and the team started doing you tube builds they would be a huge channel

@@garyalexander2480I’d definitely watch such a build, and I’m sure you’re right, more hands on working videos, showing work being done would attract more people. An actual build, even more so. It’s a very time consuming thing to do though.

I really hope you don't stop lads, it'll be very hard to get the momentum back again. Carl is absolutely right about the growth. In terms of content, I was introduced to RE through your twin turbo Lambo work so in that vein I'd personally like to see you take your facilities, skills and knowledge and apply them to the cars you already own. We want to see custom builds like the Noble done to a high standard. However, the issue is that you have to keep the momentum with regular updates here too otherwise people lose interest. Being brutally honest nobody wants a whole episode on a rusty fuel tank when it could be a ten minute segment. Your dyno is a MASSIVELY underutilised asset for content. Why haven't we seen baseline runs on the Skyline and ZX? Why didn't you run the Skyline before and after auto conversion to see how much the slushbox sapped? Would you consider hosting and filming a dyno day? Matt Armstrong etc are ok for the layman but in the end it's just bolting OEM bits and a big exhaust to cars but with fast progress and amazing editing. The things that you're capable of are another level entirely.

  • @Coooooookie806

Exactly what this guy said 👍 Get the skyline and zx out of the way if there just simple restores and flip jobs for cash then focus on the noble and show us how to make it a proper track/race car utilising you and your teams extensive knowledge and experience. Keep the videos short and to the point on the task your doing to keep people viewing them and interested. Save the full B roll material for the upgrade/job done and if the short version hits release the full video later on with the full uncut version. As for the cost side I think if you really want to see the real figures if you tube is paying for itself is to report on every single service/repair or upgrade job you do and get this stored in your electronic receipt system so you can put a money value against a job that you got from people finding you on YT. Anyway keep up the good work and keep it real as you always do, everything will work out itself if you want it to!

Sell the Noble as is, sell the 300ZX and Skyline as none of these cars add value to you, as a car person I will watch a kiwi or an Aussie if I want 90's JDM fluff, the Noble is a niche vehicle and unknown outside the UK. Yes it's good if you did nothing other than KZread, but you have more depth than Mat Armstrong. He needs shock cars to maintain attention and he can't stop or pause. In logistics you are a push method, where stuff gets sent and you deal with it, like a supermarket or clothing store. Whilst Mat is a pull method, where he is selecting what he thinks will work. I would not have my car recovered to Mat for diagnostic work and you should not be pulling Jap cars into your workshop for KZread. You mentioned the cost per hour, I would look at the ramp being out of action with the Noble as a problem. I would suggest you get someone young to run the social media and be the buffer to you doing what you are best utilised. I have our daughter doing it and she doesn't want to pull gearboxes apart and that responsibility is then theirs rather than teaching ol' man Ricky how to be a social media expert.

@@fraserwright9482Interesting and spot on comment, learned something too. Thanks. This turns on what Rick really wants from this. I think his blood pressure doesn’t need what’s required to really maximise the potential of this channel and having to roll around the needs for filming and work priorities could & probably would quickly become wearing for him. I think the optimum is showing more detail on the end to end experience on the more interesting “threads” that come in. Definitely include diagnostics and recommendations as that’s Ricks USP. The execution, I expect any of his workshop staff can do that. Dyno use, absolutely right. Super expensive piece of kit, let it earn its place even more. MAA is a totally different thing & fun though he is, I doubt it’s got legs in truth. When you’ve bought a spare Rolls to fix another Rolls, where do you go from there?

I watch all of the content religiously and enjoy both the technical content and the projects. Taking Mat as an example, he now has a team of people working on his projects (cameraman, dad, him and his girlfriend) not to mention collaborating with other people with huge success in the states - and it’s a full time job to produce a video every couple of weeks. You are running a successful business as well as spending two days a week trying to make KZread work… Maybe you need someone to work on projects full time and follow the process in a regular fashion? Don’t stop Ricky, the content is good to watch and the rants are perfectly valid points👍

The level of service I got from my local Audi dealer is one of the main reason I got rid of my Q3. It had a major braking issue, which they couldn’t sort out. As a retired vehicle examiner I told them what was wrong with it, they disagreed as their computer system couldn’t find the “mechanical” fault. Another issue was that the car had the fancy speaker system. The switch gear in the doors didn’t fit properly and rattled. They said reset all the bass/treble levels to zero and don’t listen to your music to loud. That was their way to sort it. Honestly wtf. had to go to a main dealer as it was a Motability vehicle.

Unbelievable. Except I believe you. The technical term for this failure is “not giving a sh*t”. That’s probably the only failure mode I personally cannot stand. Not if I’m paying for it. It doesn’t matter what the item is or it’s cost. Not caring about doing it properly is an automatic “never return to that workshop” thing. Because they’ll mess up whatever you bring them. I’ve watched enough videos from REP to feel certain all of them want to & intend to do everything properly. I think even if Rick didn’t shout at them for a f*** up of a job, a look of reproach from the boss would be the absolute worst thing to happen at work. Honest failures do happen, despite every care. No one gets shot if a part fails. At least one vehicle is there because a part has cracked. No one is at fault, on this occasion, customer unfortunately has to pay to fix it.

Super video and KZread, in your case, as I see it, is your window to showcase proper workmanship and a way to keep/attract clients. Your ego drives the vision and showing that to a broader audience cannot be measured in money only. Cost of marketing cannot be directly measured but not doing marketing will diminish turnover over time. Keeping the channel going is viable, provided you still want to front it.

From the 100 plus channels I watch, the contributors that I watch most are the ones that post daily. It becomes a routine for the viewer, I’ve stopped watching normal telly and watch KZread’s for the last 4 years. Your content is top notch and very watchable. I think you could make that jump to daily, 20-30 minute videos make it easier for the average person to watch. Concentrate your video time to one or two days days but spread the releases over a week.

I think because your channel is genuine, not full of jeopardy and reality style TV bullshit and drams, you will be missing out on the instawanker audience. Your clients and their cars are higher end, and not chavtastic shitboxes. Personally, I watch every one of your uploads, I find them fascinating and it shows the dedication, stress, hassle, honestly and clarity you have for your team, your clients and your future. Moat won't understand the truth behind your business, your devotion to being a proper trusted and exceptional mechanic. The tech updates are mind blowing, and the rants really hit home too. The humour is wonderful, you can see the team works well together. One thing I thought of whilst watching it, when you were talking about numbers and likes, is McDonalds sell a lot more foot than Heston or The Fat Duck, and you can't compare high end with number chasing product. Too many things are fake, staged, over hyped, click baited, when the content is piss thin, and good content will always be more unique. Please don't chuck it in just yet.

If I were you, I would focus on one of the three cars you have previous bought. Noble, Skyline the 300ZX and do a series from start to finish and complete one of them. An audience likes to have something to look forward to. An episode once a week on one of the cars your restoring is the way to go. Focus in on one aspect your going to work on. Body Drive train, engine, brakes, etc. Hope this helps Regards Anto from Ireland.

Ricky, this is one of the best car tech channels on YT for performance cars. Where I suggest you make a saving is by cutting out the walk around the parking lot at the start. I'm not interested in how many cars are waiting for what parts. You could save at least 10 mins filming time every video. I want to see what is happening in the workshop with case studies in depth when you get an interesting job in. The 3 part on the RS3 engine rebuild was brilliant and highlights why you are streets better than any Audi dealer. And that will bring you new customers. Cut the waffle, focus on what makes you special. Good luck!

I grew up with shows like Faulty Towers so the old school British humor is always entertaining and harkens back to a magical time for those that were there. Been here from the 6K subscriber mark and will usually watch a video in its entirety even if over an hr.). The technical content is some of the best on YT in my opinion and like many here could watch endless hrs. and not me bored. On the other hand, the reality is this makes no financial sense. The fact that a 300ZX video has been one of the most popular attests to this fact. You need to think about your family, employees, and business especially in these precarious times. You're a great host with dry wit and fantastic at explaining technical concepts buy your real talent is building engines and gearboxes. Lambo, Audi, McLaren, and now Ferrari? Seems like a no-brainer to me stop YT immediately and check back in for an update in 6 months or so.

Ricky . With regards to your comments on Dealer techs i couldn't agree more. Having been a JLR tech in several different workshops over a 7.5 year period i saw a massive decline in the skillset of the apprentice coming thru the academy. Most , but not all were only interested in easy work that pays time and so gets them bonus . They never wanted to spend money on tools to do the job . Also trying to get an accurate description of what fault the customer was having and how it manifested ( ie what conditions ) was a nightmare. It seemed that only the Level 3 and Level 4 techs had the foresight to actually use their brains and ask to speak to the customer directly . The amount of hoops you had to jump thru on warranty was ridiculous too- 4 seperate battery tests to diagnose something simple like a failed battery and then half the time they'd kick the claim back unpaid . Glad I'm out of that environment and now in a Bosch back independent 😀

Not that you asked me ….but a little bit of tuning and fixing older popular fast cars I think would work a real treat! For a video not a business. I say it because of the popularity of those channels of the tv era or for instance Matt. I think ppl love lambos and R8s but would really love a barn find fix fast classic. The channel will naturally grow to be massive.

Utube will be a worse place without your content Ricky , you do get the buisness boost which probably might make it worth it but it’s a bit of a commercial decision maybe do need to take on extra staff Maybe might be worth looking at a bit of sponsorship which I know it’s against what you do, but maybe if it makes it work maybe look at it, maybe heart to heart to Matt or any other utubers you know Personality I’m fascinated by the buisness of Utube.

What I like most is the knowledge you guys have and the fact you are dealing with real clients cars and engines. As a steer i would do no more than 20min videos twice a week max and concentrate on telling the stories of what you are doing on clients cars and why. Do not be just like any other car utuber, most of whom are not machanics, just using cars as a prop. I appreciate you buying cars you think people want to see you repair but that just makes you like all the others. It's your business work people want to see, the daily mechanical challenges of a proper quality unique business repairing and building high end cars and engines.

Genuinely one of my favourite channels, I personally love the technical side of things with having spent 90% of my working life in a garage/dealer and now working in vehicle development it’s great to learn how something gets built that most people never get to see. Maybe if things aren’t quite adding up on the books try a Patreon type thing where you give the people exclusive access to different builds or early access to content, I’m not too clued up on how it works but it’s just an idea 🤷🏻‍♂️ seen some other creators do similar things.

I would never have walked into the workshop and enquired about the Dyno had it not been for KZread. Never. Watched your business grow having seen it at the smaller unit while getting tow bars done. Watched from a distance ever since. I also run a business locally in Swindon. Im glad it’s just as tough for you as it is for others. Its great to watch. I enjoy watching the knowledge and the “talk” about cars. I realise why none car people find technical talk boring 😂 but the depth you go to build an engine is great. There are people who are solely just engine builders who don’t go into the detail or have the tools for recording the data and build spec sheets out there! And thats scary. Keep the videos coming. It really is the way forward - I keep getting pressured into doing videos for my own business social media. And people what to see a blocked drain unblocked! Its madness what people want to watch ! Keep it coming I enjoy the videos. Its good for advertising and ranting.

You have to remind yourself your channel is the golden goose of publicity, clients see your professionalism and will send their cars to you because they know you can be trusted with high value cars. You can adjust your channel for more views, stay on one subject per video, show the car a little bit if you are going to to take the transmission out for example to rebuild it. Don't make the videos too long. Do part 1 and part 2 if you have to. Take Curated for example, people talk about them on forums to have their cars shipped there because they seem respectable. Matt is selling a dream buying crashed cars for a bargain, people eat that up thinking they can do that too. For them it's like buying a lottery ticket hoping to win mechanical skills or money to buy a busted super car. Why not take a few ideas from him and build a storyline with a customer's car where you have to fix many issues. Take that car out for a spin, go to a track event, car show, etc. From one problem car you make several videos out of it. Think what you can improve on but don't expect the millions of views like they do, they sell soap opera fluff with their highly energized personality. You have a solid foundation with your business so you have to find a way to augment it. People call for advice, no problem consultation fee is $___, make it worth while side tracking you from the shop.

Thoughts: Starting with the obvious, the skyline and the zx bare no relation to your business. Get them fixed up and gone. Sort the TT, pull the B8 in. Get them finished, do buyers guides. Consider raffling them. Repeat this cycle with relevant cars - the others are doing body repair salvage, you can do the bit no one else can do why aren’t you? In video ads/sponsors: I know you have motul, but does it pay enough? It wasn’t mentioned. People accept ads as being part of the deal, we watch free videos, we put up with a minute of adverts. The Carly one was actually good and didn’t detract from the video. A project track car (you need one anyway!) liveried TTRS at the Combe action days etc. Build content, track content and the bonus of on track advertising. There’s lots more, but getting into the realms of how to run the rest of the business so I’ll leave it there. You’re only a few tweaks away from something very special, but distractions can be a killer…..

For me, seeing stuff worked on, diagnosed, fixed and or improved, then started and test driven always makes good content. Not, will it run videos, but none of us hear supercars running or see them driving around every day. I do appreciate that they are customers cars, so you can't go blasting around Swindon in them. I vividly remember Mat's Lamborghini when you dyno tested that though. Awesome!! The black Ferrari seemed to get finished and then went. Did I miss a video? Keep it light hearted, genuine and real. It's what I want to see. Bring the cars and bikes to life though, as they could all be electric and we wouldn't know. All the best Ricky. Martin.

The way you deliver your content is your USP IMHO and a major part of your appeal to me including your honesty as others have said and saying things as they are. I've shared your channel to many who now also agree. I came across you as we used to race with Josh in Ducatis and he shared a video and Ive been hooked since. I've learnt so much from your channel and things you wouldn't know you need to know and I like the variety. Growing up I lived in my uncles garage and the banter is very similar and takes me to a happy place and memories watching you. However, I totally get what you're saying. I'd be gutted if you stopped and I'll mourn it for months, but you need to do what's important. I'm sure you'll make the right decision and I wish I could do more than like share and subscribe. What about going down sponsorship route to help fund more or Davs time and I'd like to maybe see some collabs like more with Matt and others similar. Maybe someone you can do some competitions with like who can build most powerful engine in 48 hours or soemthing etc

Hi Ricky I’ll try and make this short, without KZread we wouldn’t have known about Carl being ill and being able to help him, your honesty and great team behind you give customers faith in you. I really believe there is a monetary value to be apportioned from KZread from customers bringing cars to you after seeing your channel. I do think your workshop should be separated physically with Supercars in one area and projects in another 🤑. All the best for the future. One of the best auto channels. Please don't quit. You & Dav-la are mint. Great content whatever the subject. New rant suggestion: BURNOUT COMPETITIONS. Being a retired engineer who loves cars and has mechanical sympathy, I cringe at hearing an engine screaming on the limiter - hidden in a cloud of smoke. HOW do they judge a winner? X-ray goggles? Without huge fans (or a hovering helicopter) to remedy blindness by smoke, what a stupid waste of time and tyres. Your views please?

The engine builds are interesting & I want to see what exactly happens to the Noble, although watch out from across the pond as Jack is building one!!
