Here's what chatgpt said. The word you're referring to, "dipaisy," is likely "dépayser." This French term has several meanings, but it generally refers to the feeling of being disoriented or out of place, especially when someone is in an unfamiliar environment. It can also mean to change one's surroundings or to give someone a sense of being in a different place. In English, it is sometimes translated as "to disorient" or "to make feel out of place." In a more positive context, it can also imply the refreshing change of scenery.

"If they know you're a foreigner, they will bring a bunch of random sh_t to your table (when you're at a bar)" - Sound like one quick way to spend 4K USD per month. But hey, look at the bright side. It is still only $48K USD per year. Waaay cheaper than living in Monréal. Quite interesting, my niece and nephew are half Vietnamese and half Syrian. When they are in the US, we think they look more Syrian than Vietnamese. When they visited Syria, their Syrian relatives think they look more Vietnamese than Syrian. Love this kind of interviews. One can definitely relate to many experiences others have.

Same thing happened to me in the Philippines when I was her age. Not 12K though, WOW! So she had blast! But she learned her lesson real quick. I think that's better than pussyfooting with the money and not learning the system. And it really helped her break out of her shell and get comfortable despite being foreign. Worth the money and rip off.

You are right. Foreigners love it because in Vietnam your living cost is 20% if you manage things moderately intelligently BUT for local Vietnamese life is anything but cheap.
