Imagine being a player that has gone to multiple lans and you still have zero crowd experience because you never get to play in front of them.

i find it amusing that psyonix partnered with epic for a higher budget but epic's decisions are so bad that they now have to cut the budget below what it originally was.

I’m pretty sure psyonix makes the decisions, just within the scope of Epic’s policies and business practices. Psyonix is the one to blame. Epic merely made an acquisition.

the game doesnt make enough money. its a free game now and has been for years. maybe makes a million dollars. how do you pay a large staff a livable wage and pay for venues plus travel. maybe even 2 million. just doesnt make enough money. rizzo is right. costs are going up.. blame the economy. especially in canada

This was my first time watching a major live like on twitch and such and it was so lit

I was lucky enough to go to LANdon 2 years ago and even thought it was only 2 crowd days we had like 5 series a day to the point where we didn’t even have time to go bathroom in between cos we might miss a match

this is common in CS to a degree only playoffs are in an arena open to crowd (QFs-> GFs)

Yeah thats what I was thinking. I've watched cs since 2007 and this format just seems so normal to me. I like that you have to make top8 to get the crowd. Makes the crowd more special. to be fair though in cs playoffs are usually 4 days. QF + QF QF + QF SF + SF showmatch + GF

Other sports aren’t like this, Atleast in the car world. Drift events, drag racing, etc. are typically always open to spectators during practice, qualifying, and the actual event.

The problem is that the Swiss stage is double, simultaneous matches, so they have to set up two stages with 4 teams and then Friday night they have to change it for the quarterfinals. IT might be that the venue was pretty small too.

just add limited seating for the first 2 days at a reasonable price to big fans and start with family and friends, or VIP tickets where you can do something cool like meet teams or play a 1v1 against a pro. I plan to go to worlds (first event I attend), so I'm not sure how thing currently work but just need to be creative about it.

Hopefully the only match played in front of a crowd at Worlds will be the Grand Finals. Screw it, make it best of 3, that should save Epic some cash

Was a fantastic major.

For some reason I have this weird impression that Rocket League set to "fade out". They're still doing some events to not straight up abandon it, but they aren't doing anything to make the game more popular or better as well. There has only been very unfortunate decisions over the last few years and it's a sad thing to witness, because Rocket League really is the best eSport game you could have.

I agree. I think they bought RL and Psyonix to push Fortnite, which is why Rocket Racing was created. I love RL and watching it die, sucks!

I’m guessing that there was simultaneous matches in swiss could have something to do with it.

Epic probably saved some money by assigning the summer intern responsible for new content for the esports marketing, and of course they will pass the savings onto us, the loyal gamers.

I think you are over thinking this... why can't they make money on the event? They can't get enough people to go watch, it isn't important enough to enough people. They could raise ticket prices to be CRAZY... Like, think of big music groups. They would take as many sold out dates as they can get, because they MAKE money on the events. If they are cutting costs, it is because the entire thing is a loss leader. Not sure how to fix it.... but you need to first really define the problem. If this event was a money maker, they wouldn't be doing it so poorly.

I was scratching my head why it was on Easter Sunday. Not because of a religious thing but if you wanted to profit why not do it on a more open weekend? They should do the other majors on July 4th and Thanksgiving.

The part about parents traveling across the world to see their kid play only to have them miss top 8 and not even get to see them play is so damning. Epic are so far removed from reality at this point. Or whoever is making the esports decisions, idc. The only people who would make that decision and not see the issues with it are the suits who have no idea what real life is like. Just imagine this for any sport, like your high school baseball team or something makes the national championship but they play in a secluded field with no viewers for the first few elimination rounds. What sort of idiot thinks this is a valid thing to do.

These elim day complaints have been happening since RLCS X its the same story they don't care what their fans think. It's so dumb because it alienates fans of teams that aren't top 8 consistently. Why would I go to the major to see my underdog team when they'll likely be elimd before I get in the venue. The underdog story's are what makes RL great. It just keeps fans from getting nearly as invested in teams if they're not top 2 or 3 in the region and that's minimizing the potential growth of the ESPORT. Lawler has been talking about this forever

Not that hot take: more people would be willing to spend money to go if they could watch the swiss also. Why pay money to not know for sure that you’ll get to see your team play? I’d LOVE to go to a LAN, but there’s no chance I’d ever pay to fly somewhere with the uncertainty that it currently requires. If it’s about money, you’d make more money by making it a more enticing proposition by having crowds for the whole event. All 16 teams.

Honestly though, I miss Swiss. Because that made sure that the teams that were the best would meet each other in finals.

Nah playoffs all on one day isn't it. Takes all the tension out of it for both crowd and players. Just becomes a long exausting day. All they needed to do was let the crowd in on friday (swiss round 4-5).

I don’t know why teams like Jeff getting upset about taking one team from NA and EU, like I’m sorry but dude’s team is competing in the hardest region, Williams Resolve wasn’t going to make top 5 or even top 8 in EU. Williams Resolve made top 12 in Regional 1 and didn’t even make it to Regional 2 or 3.

This Major wasn't much different from previous ones. When was the last time they let the crowd in for the early stages of the event? And are we forgetting championship Sunday at 2022 Worlds when they did the full top 8, and how everyone bitched that it was too long? Do we want crowds for every day when the days are going to be 9 hours long? The crowd isn't going to make it, they'll be dead by day 2. If they really want a crowd for Swiss, then they need to run an entertainment complex with 2 or 3 rooms, kind of like a music festival or a convention. You go to the room that's hosting the teams you want to watch, but you'll be missing what's going on in the other rooms because it's all happening at the same time. It would get the 9-16 teams in front of a crowd, but you know there are going to be games where no one is in the room because it's 2 low seeded teams. I don't know if Epic, Psyonix, and Blast see the value in having 18 computers, on 3 different stages that all need admins and tech support and security and all of that. I understand the frustration of not being able to see half of the teams, but what choice do they really have that satisfies the hosts financially, as well as the spectators?

Agree. Back in the day I got dead tired by watching rlcs. There is no reason to have an insane amount of games in front of people. Crazy to see that people don't see the wider picture instead of: "If u open doors on friday (on a different location than the weekend) then u will make more money!!! :DD and if u dont then dying game and epic bad"

I agree. Round 3,4 and 5 of the swiss would be 17 matches, how would that even be possible to show to the crowd? Rizzo's take is pretty bad IMO and I think it's fine how it is now. They have made decisions way worse than this. Worlds 2022 was a marathon of a watch which ended with a very lame grand finals. I'll take this format over what they did back then any day.

What's great is when Epic finally chokes out the life of RLCS and then go "game is dead :(" and use it as an excuse to rip it all apart. Also, I still can't believe they're only going to have 16 teams at worlds. So, wouldn't be surprised if they use the same format for worlds...

If talking heads would actually consider the lens rhat Epic takes. What to do to make money? Paying a staff for security is expensive and they know the crowd will show anyways. The money leads to their shitty tournament shenanigans your whole community was pissed about.

It really does seem like we're towards the end of rocket league. Unless they really start changing things, im afraid its just going to die off :/ they dont seem to be putting any effort into the game at the moment and just letting it sit idley by while it milks as much money as possible from whats left of the community. As someone who played all the way back in 2015, it's extremely sad to see.

But you can't say the game is doing well or in a upward trajectory right now. I want nothing more than RL to do good, it just sucks to see it get treated this way.

People are so negative sometimes... I watched the whole Major with my dad on the official stream and we both had a lot of fun watching it. I feel people are just not having fun because they don't want to and instead they want something to complain about. Sure some very questionable decisions have been made both for the game and RLCS, but they haven't really made my experience with them any less fun. I still got to watch an amazing Major and the game is still about making my silly little car push a ball into the goal. I thought we all liked this game because cars playing football is fun, but maybe it's just me, idk...

How are people so accepting of this poor format when you get much more gameplay out of a Counterstrike or Valorant tournament? Also it was like 2k people in there. Arena looked pretty dead to me compared to the world championship or literally any counter strike event. Rocket League is dieing. People are losing interest. The arena and crowd looked like the size of a college football match.

Main reason was not enough staff to cast 14 series. I'm a Rocket League Caster myself and you don't want only like 6 ppl to share 14 series. Yes.,, it is fun to cast, but still very exhausting and at the end of the day you will be glad if you can just enjoy some matches leaned back. Also you have to keep in mind that production are humans to who needs to eat and sleep ;).

That is one of the small amount of things Riot does the best with leauge. Even when it comes to play-ins with minor region team. Those matches still have around 150-200 seating capacity.
