It’s hard to believe now, but there was a time when radio programmers didn’t want to play Alice in Chains because as they put it Layne’s voice didn’t sound right and the label thought the band’s breakout hit, shouldn’t have even been included on Facelieft. .In today’s video, let’s take a look at how the band finally broke into the mainstream.
Formed in 1987, in Seattle, Alice in Chains original lineup consisted of frontman Layne Staley, guitarist jerry cantrell, bassist Mike Starr and drummer Sean Kinney.
While a lot of bands sang about partying or chicks, Alice in Chains didn’t, tackling more dark subject matter, despite their goofy offstage persona. Bassit mike star would tell the lansing journal “We write about something to get it off our chests. We take out our aggressions on our music so we don’t have to be negative in person.
The band would sign to columbia records and soon started recording their debut record facelift in early 1990. The band would butt heads with their record label over the inclusion of the song man in the box oJerry Cantrel told author Greg Prato "I've had conversations with the record company about this, and everybody conveniently forgets the fact that nobody really liked that song," he told Greg Prato. "They thought it was too slow and dirgey. There was some discussion about it maybe not being on the record, and we're like, 'F--k that - that song is killer.'" Released
Despite some differences with their record label over the inclusion of the song Columbia made Facelift a top priority among a more pop based roster with acts like Mariah Carey, New Kids on the Block and C&C Music Factory. S everal months before the records August of 1990 release, Columbia would send select retailers a free three song EP called We Die Young, which retailers could sell for pure profit. When Facelift came out in August, columbia gave away 40,000 free video copies of band playing the moore theater to those who bought the record.. Then came, the final piece of the puzzle - man in the box. But the first single we die young a song about Jerry witnessing young kids dealing drugs while riding the bus didn’t make a big splash. Alice would tour with everyone from Iggy Pop to Poison to Extreme. Then of course there was the clash of the titans tour playing with anthrax, slayer and megadeth. Dummer sean kinney would recall to rolling stone That tour was a real challenge, because we’re not a speed-metal band,” says Kinney. “During our set the entire crowd would chant, ‘Slayer, Slayer, Slayer.’ But we figured, hey, if we could play for a Slayer crowd and not get killed, we had it made.”
It was around this time in early 1991 columbia issued man in the box as the second single. The song’s lyrics took on a few meanings. Layne would tell Roing Stone in 1992 “I started writing about censorship. Around the same time, we went out for dinner with some Columbia Records people who were vegetarians. They told me how veal was made from calves raised in these small boxes, and that image stuck in my head. So I went home and wrote about government censorship and eating meat as seen through the eyes of a doomed calf.

That *is* pretty wild that radio execs thought that about Layne's voice. I always found Layne's voice to be similar to Axl's, except Layne had a much more full, powerful voice and he didn't have all those annoying tics that Axl had/has. Plus, AiC was a band that discussed real feelings to which so many in my generation could relate. Good on Sammy for bringing AiC out on tour with VH. I always love hearing Sammy being interviewed. It was just different, and this was the breath of gritty fresh air that music needed at the time. He always sounds to me like he's singing flat, until I work out what notes he's singing and realise he's not, and it's a masterful use of colour notes, usually that he's singing a note meant to resonate against the next chord, so you're the one making up the resolution of the notes in your head.

Tbh, as an older skool underground punkster, Grunge in general wasn't that impressive when it hit to me & my crew. However, i learned to appreciate it later & realize the genre has some of its own best shit ever. So when Man In The Box hit & everyone was blown away I just thought it was good, but nothing special. Then I saw them open, along with Motorhead, for Ozzy that tour & still didn't care for them. But then I saw them Lollapalooza/Dirt tour on lsd (actually I was tripping 1st time too!😅) & they came out with Them Bones with the flood lights flashing on the "Ah!"s, Staley in a Armani suit wearing Ray Bans with his hair slicked back, & they proceeded to kick my ass PROPER!🤘🤯 I went out the next day & bought the CD & was my fave of the Grunge. Yes, I am Blessed to have experienced & finally appreciated one of the GOAT'S! R.I.P. Layne... & Thanks for the Jam!🙏❤️ 🤘🌎❤️

I’ve listened since the beginning. Through great times and times that looking back scare the shit out of me getting that close to checking out. Now I’m good and balanced and can enjoy the great music without wanting to hide in my garage.

I always said Layne had one of the best voices of all time. The tone of his normal singing voice was a unique gift. He has a great singing voice, and on top of that had great range and control of his voice. The guy that said his voice was wrong is an idiot.

AIC is still so underrated! I have always felt Layne's voice was one of the greatest ever, and the best band to come out of the grunge era. Imo that is. I mean music is so subjective. But there is no denying they were so unique . They had their own sound and nobody else sounded like them. RIP Layne, you are missed.

Layne is still the most unique voice I've heard in any genre they reached fame but they could've been huge if layne lived and beat his addiction I always thought a movie about his rise and fall would be a great way to bring him to a new generation

I was introduced to AIC by seeing them live as the opening act for VH in late 91 They all came out on stage wearing black thong speedos to a mainly deserted Orlando arena and they were *WILD* I fell in love with their music instantly! 1 of the greatest grung bands ever and still in my playlist

Wow I had no idea that man in the box was about the way that they processed veal I always get great information from your documentaries about things what I thought the song was about was a horror movie I think from the 1970s the late 1970s or the early eighties that was called The harvest where a guy actually at the end of the movie gets his eyes shut and on the fact that they didn't want to play Man in the box because of Layne Staley's voice they could not be more wrong about his voice? It was truly incredible to listen to him saying and the lyrics of each song by Alice in chains really help a lot of people
