Velvet Revolver
The supergroup Velvet Revolver was underwhelming to a lot of people. While music fans loved Guns N’ Roses and Stone Temple pilots, the combination of ⅗ of Guns N’ Roses with one parts of Stone Temple Pilots would result in a volatile group that turned their guns internally while other musicians also took swipes at the group. In today’s video. Let’s talk bout the musicians who didn’t get along with Velvet Revolver.
Hoobastank
In the early 2000’s the band hoobastank had back to back platinum albums and they had one of the most played songs of 2004 with title track of their third album The Reason. As part of the tour to promote the album The Reason, Hobastank would open some shows for Velvet Revolver. It was following that tour the band began writing their follow up record Every Man For Himself. One of the songs “If I were You’ garnered alot of press coverage with the lyrics being partially inspired by teh velvet revolver tour.
Hoobastank frontman Doug Robb would tell MTV News
"We were on the Velvet Revolver tour, and some of the shows were amazing, but some of them were terrible," "The audience was filled with guys who love Guns N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots and think everyone else should go to hell. People would turn their backs to us the whole time and keep their middle fingers in the air.
As for the Velvet Revolver members he’d add - you see all these guys who have so much and don't appreciate it," he said. "They seem to have forgotten where they came from. Actually, let me rephrase that: Four of those guys were the coolest ever, one of them is just in his own world. And I'll leave it at that." Apparently Weiland didn’t say hello to the band for the first three weeks of the tour.
Guitarist Dan Estrin would tell the Appetite for Distortion podcast in 2019 that following scott weiland’s death he didn’t change his outlook on the tour. He would add that scott weiland wasn’t very nice and accommodating. He would echo Robb’s comments that Slash and therest of the guys treated them so well.
Axl Rose
During Velvet Revolver’s short time together from 2003-2008, the topic of Guns N’ Roses always came up in interviews. It also didn’t help that GN’R frontman Axl Rose was working away with his new lineup of the band and was trying to get Chinese Demoracy out and he was also touring with the band. Slash, Duff and Axl were also involved in a nasty lawsuit over rights to the band’s old songs.
In March of 2006 Rose would release a statement claiming Slash made an unannounced visit to his house to try to have a truce and end the lawsuit. The statement would read. "Slash came to inform Axl that: 'Duff was spineless,' '[Velvet Revolver frontman] Scott [Weiland] was a fraud,' that he 'hates [Revolver drummer] Matt Sorum' and that in this ongoing war, contest or whatever anyone wants to call it that Slash has waged against Axl for the better part of 20 years, that Axl has proven himself 'the stronger.' "
Slash would claim for a bit he never made a visit shortly after the statement cmae out, but in his 2007 autobiography, Slash would confirm that he did visit Axl’s house, but he didn’t speak to Axl but rather left a note for his assistant.
Then in 2009 Axl gave an interview to Spinner where he was asked about his former guitarist’s playing ability to which Rose responded
I prefer listening to others in general, especially those who both push their talents and infuse them with a level of energy that I've seldom heard in his efforts over the years. I'm not taking anything away from the man that are his to claim for his past efforts; it's just that for whatever reason for me, whether the approach, style or basic hands-on technique is there, the passion and true dedication to the art of guitar in his chosen area other than being, in my opinion, a whore for the limelight has

I was told the story behind that. The GNR guys kept insisting Travis was the guy for the gig and kept pestering him. Travis didn't want to do it until finally he flew out to L.A. and jammed on a few songs with them. One of the titles was called Sick. They were impressed by his vocal abilities but he didn't really have the "look" as he had shaved his head around that time. He said it was a fun experience but that he was an artist and they were "actors". He wasn't into the whole rockstar thing. Ultimately it went to Weiland which I think was a good choice. In many ways, when you say or even think "supergroup", you know the end result: great music, major friction. It makes sense, friction produces heat, right? I'm thankful for Velvet Revolver. I really enjoyed some of their music no doubt. They helped usher in a short era of super groups along with Audioslave. We also got Army of Anyone(Filter+STP) and Chicken Foot(Sammy Hagar, Chad Smith, Michael Anothony). I think it also sparked other artists in the music industry to branch out: like the guitarist from A Perfect Circle(Billy Howerdel) to create Ashes Divide; and members of both metal bands, Fear Factory and Threat Signal, to create the band Arkaea. While Supergroups weren't a new concept(Temple of the Dog springs to mind, and of course music history has plenty of others), there's no denying the rippling effect that Velvet Revolver and Audioslave had at the time.
VR's first album is good!
Velvet Revolver was hugely successful. Their first album debuted #1 and sold 4 million copies. Weiland was a junky that acted like a junky.

VR rocks🔥
I met all members of Velvet Revolver except for Slash when I was working at Burbank Airport (was called "Bob Hope" airport back then). The only one that wasn't really cool was Scott. Never got to meet Slash but all of my coworkers have said that he was always cool. Scott just seemed like a pouty, whining bitch; seemed like he was mad because he had to go through the same process as everybody else. That girl from the videos was with him and she was all over him but the vibe he gave was that he hated her guys and was only tolerating her presence. Almost like she was nothing more than a chaperone; hired by the rest of the band to keep him off drugs and on time. That's the vibe I got anyway.
I’m sure they based it off of a two beer selection, oddly enough kind of a transpired from there when you realize what exactly was going on, but at the same time, he didn’t realize that he would’ve taken his side over the actual friend because of the circumstances regardless of how poorly one was being treated
holy shit, now that I listen to Dirty Little Thing after this video if you know Josh Todd you can totally see that's his Vocal/Writing Style in the song.
I love VR....
What a coincidence that this video came out when I just started heavily listening to their two albums again. Their debut is an album which I appreciate more with every passing year. Although there isn't a single song that ends up being an absolute classic, man, do several songs came damn close! But they were right that the 2nd album needed to be even better than the first. It does include 'Last Fight' which, for my money, is the best song they ever made. 'For the Boys' and 'Gravedancer' is nice tracks too, but much of it feels very underwhelming and filler worthy.
