That was definitely the case back in the day, back in the 50s and 60s you were almost guaranteed to see some sort of horrific injury every race. But thankfully the engineering that goes into these cars keeps drivers safe through some of the gnarliest crashes ever.

I remember as a kid watching that horrific crash Travis Pastrana had in his rally car, he flipped a million times at incredible speed and his arm even came out of the car. He and his co-pilots were fine but my dad looked at me and said "that's why you don't cheap out on a roll cage!"

I 100% agree. In the very early beginning, like 2005 to 2010ish, the community was basically given the responsibility and chance to have a website/platform that is essentially run, monitored, and maintained by the people who use it. But as humans always do, there will always be some who can't help but take everything to extremes and cause the shitshow that what we know today as "modern youtube". Now, because of undeniable human nature, KZread has turned for the worst with how its run a monitored nowadays. Where it used to be the issue was so much uncensored content and essentially ruleless platform. It has now gone from being really bad for the explained reasons, to being even worse than before with the way the platform is monitored. Nowadays KZread is legitimately having to put in place so many rules and things that it has totally got to the point of punishing innocent people that want to keep the platform honest and good hearted for ridiculous things that don't make sense. KZread attempts at enforcing rules to stop bad activity has only majorly affected the true hearted users of the platform, and its honestly sad to see that in the eyes of a massive company, the community and general users that legitimately make your company relevant at all, literally don't matter. The issues we as creators and users experience and talk about will almost certainly never come close to being heard or whispered at the company office, while the only changes actually being made are new rules and restrictions only created to appease the companies that "partner" with KZread because they basically fund KZread as a company, so beyond the level of users and creators, the only goal of KZread is to make profit. Its why KZread copyright rules are so screwed, because kf they fixed it, KZread might lose partnership which comes with massive money and investment funding decrease, so KZread really only makes changes that keep as much money rolling in as possible, it sucks, but welcome to modern capitalism my friend

A couple of F1 crashes recently show the improvements of motorsport safety. Last year F1 driver Gounghu Zhou crashed at Silverstone and his car skidded down the track upside down rolled through the gravel trap and boumced over the safety fence. The year before Roman Grojsean went through a section of amco barrier split his car in half igniting the feul and he was out of the car and jumped the barrier. His hands were burnt but today he races in Indy

5:15 whats funny is that we had a driving school class at my highschool and we were taught to always pump the brakes after going through a puddle to clear off any water. What always confused me though was that even when I would offroad and completely submerge my brakes in water, the disks never lost braking force. Now it makes sense since US driving safety laws are mainly based on the older 80's and 90's cars that were more often equipped with drums that they would tell us that

I can recall multiple situations in late 90's onwards where I experienced drum brake failure, or loss of brake efficiency, and boy was it an unpleasant experience! You could feel the brakes losing efficiency and all you could do was hope for the best.

  • @katydid5088

I still have nightmares about a Chevy Suburban (I know it had drum brakes in the back but can't remember if they were in the front) on vacation careening down a steep mountainside with our trailer behind it. The breaks had gotten wet from a little bit of rain from a drainage gutter. We pulled over ASAP and took off the trailer (which we had planned to do at a designated parking space anyway) but road conditions were so poor (it was foggy on and off) that we ended up doing our sight seeing and hauling the trailer up afterwards. That vacation resulted in us doing our first drum to disc conversion. That thing was MUCH safer afterwards and I really hope ALL passenger cars have phased out drum brakes. I know there are characteristics that make them useful in long-haul trucking but for the average pleb whose just looking for safety and minimal loss in braking power, disk is the way to go.

You should check out the origin of Murphy's law, he was the first guy from the US military to suggest seatbelts in planes. But he also brought up they had more pilots die in car crashes than in the air. He did alot of the first tests on any type of safety restraint. During testing they installed some sensors backwards and didnt get any readings. So they put in place redundancy to make sure mistakes wouldnt happen again. Because anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

I really hope/wish that the move to censor that part of the audio was just a cheeky jab at KZread's fucked up algorithm but, sadly, I doubt that's the case. Donut covers automotive engineering, industry, and technology in an engaging, funny, and informative manner and KZread's ridiculous automation systems for prioritizing (de)monetization and eligibility of (ad) revenues does nothing to enhance the viewer's experience nor does it really, effectively, exhibit any real noticeable benefit(s) for the company's who supply said ads and revenue streams. It sucks even more that there is very little we can do aside from complaining and/or becoming direct monetary supporters of these content creators. You're far too correct in labelling the given situation of circumstances as nothing more than "sad."

the evo crash has a lot of time to roll over (still brutal tho), however nolan didnt show the rest of the clip where that rally car actually fall straight down the 15 storey cliff completely on a tarmac

Fellow non-American here, and I feel you. Definitely 170 Fahrenheits there, though, which is around 75 degrees Celcius. Whenever I hear an unusually high interior/room temperature number, I’d assume it to be in Fahrenheit. Edit: did the wrong maths, people. Somehow my brain derped out and said 170F when it’s actually 130F, and that’d be 54C. A much less dramatic number, but still very uncomfortable for a car interior AND wearing a complete protective suit. Sorry guys!

Hey, great video as always. One thing - that Hyundai WRC crash happened to i20 WRC model, not Veloster N. i20 model is a small compact car, which u probably dont get in USA, so I understand the confusion. The WRC car is also based on "coupe" model, which actually, at least in my country, is not in production for regular customers.
