@@JM23007 Peak, so probably not even for 1 minute. For a longer period about 1 horsepower. Many engines can take 3 times the power, for a short period tho, otherwise it will overheat or blow up lol. Still impressive tho.

Watching this was basically reliving my childhood looking up speed records for vehicles in the library. Great job!

A small correction to be made, the SSC ultimate Aero was the world record holder for 3 years between 2007 to 2010 ( It even held the Guinness world record for those years), It was only the super sport Bugatti that held a world record. Also of no relation, There's some pretty cool land car record speeds from jet cars that went over 700 MPH on the land, insanely crazy feat, you guys should check out the ThrustSSC

RUF didn't tune cars. They toke just the basic of the car, developed own parts and engines and made their own series cars and yes, their cars was made in series.

It's simple, in Germany if a tuner changes more than certain percentage of the car (I think it's 20% or 25%) they can put their own name on it and are considered a car manufacturer and not a tuner. For example other than RUF, Alpina and ABT are also considered manufacturers. RUF has tuned 911's to just a bit more than that necessary percentage but they also build cars almost from scratch which they used Porsche parts for as well as a ton of their own.

In 2007, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT held the record for 257,41 MPH until the Veyron Super Sport came along.

*1904 Mercedes Simplex 90hp: 100+ mph* *1927 Bugatti Type 35B: 130 mph* *1935 Duesemberg SSJ: 150+ mph*

Technically the “Benz Patent Motorcar” was the fastest car when it was made

Fun Fact: None of those superfast cars of recent years can actually go 250, 270, or 300 mph. Why, you ask? They simply can't go for a full hour at those speeds. Just to set the proper perspective: The Veyron SS at top speed would completely drain it's fuel tank within 12 minutes, the tires would give out roughly within 15 minutes. So, 5 to 6 pitstops and major maintenance within an hour and you are no faster than a cheap midrange family sedan covering 300 miles. The true mastery of building a fast car would be to create a fast car that can actually cover large distances in comfort at high average speed.

Carroll Shelby's greatest accomplishment was helping Ford beat Ferrari at LeMans, multiple times. Carroll Shelby's most profitable & personally satisfying accomplishment was slapping an existing large Ford 427 cid engine into an existing AC Ace chassis. He then tuned the crap out of the combination.

I met Gerald Wiegert when he introduced the Vector W-2 twin turbo at a car show in LA. I actually sat in the W-2 (black) at the show. I think I still have the investor packet and literature they handed out that day. Astonishing car, super low profile. I am not sure if 242 mph was the goal but I do know that Car and Driver tested the car and recorded a 220 mph run.

If you kept the list to 4 door production cars then you could see some really interesting cars like a 1968 Mercedes with a 6.3 litre V8 or the Australian 1971 Ford falcon gtho with the 351 Cleveland V8

For anyone wondering: James didnt talk about the DB4 GT (1959), which had a topspeed of 152 MPH, and the DB4 GT Zagato (1960-1961) with a topspeed of 153.4 MPH.

What I always loved was that the Bugattis are luxury vehicles. They can go that fast while enjoying air conditioning and a killer stereo wrapped in luxury leather. There was no need to strip them down to the bare minimum for lower weight like some companies did just to break the record.

The main reason why Ruf shouldn't be on this list (the same reason why they never made the list back in the day either) . . Because they are not a car MANUFACTURER . . They only tune up already existing cars MANUFACTURED by a DIFFERENT company (Porsche). Back in the 80's and 90's they were always in the same category as Hennessy, Callaway, Braubus and all of the other POST - manufacturer companies.

Bugatti owned the speed records in the 1920s. Maybe they weren't really production models, but they should have been mentioned. There were a lot of sick speed records before the twenties, and they blew away the figures from the twenties that are mentioned here, but they were from cars with extremely limited runs, but still worth mentioning.

Agreed. The real hero in all this honestly are the street legal tires by Michelin. Cars have (unsafely) been doing 300mph for a while on a track in a straight line. Doing it on a production car is a whole other feat.

300+ mph was first achieved on 3rd semptember 1935 on Boneville Salt flats 311 mph in 1937 350 mph in 1938, 369 in 1939 :)

The terrifying fact of the Bugatti Chiron SS 300+ is that it's engine puts out more horsepower than a M1A2 Main Battle Tank's Gas Turbine Engine which of itself is a modified Helicopter Engine.

Actually the Duesenburg model J had a supercharged version called the SJ whose top speed was much higher at 140mph and and could hit 100mph in second gear

Exactly, to beat the official record you need to do two runs. One in both directions (not reverse) the top speed is the average top speed of the two runs. So koenigsegg is officially the fastest.

At those speeds, even the slightest on declines could assist the top speed. Its likely they pulled some Ferrari level shit on this

Since you mentioned a tuner in there, I would like to acknowledge the Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette ran 254.76 mph with less than 900 hp back in 1988. Think about those stats...less than 900 hp and ran 254+ mph in 1988. More impressive than anything on this list.

I'm pretty stoked for the Jesko Absolute, I'm pretty confident they'll put the Guinness World Record over 300MPH this year, since the theoretical top speed is 331MPH, and they have a pretty solid history of delivering on performance claims.

Louis Chiron, famous Monaco Bugatti driver in the 30's. Pronounced Shiron. Pierre Veyron and Albert Divo were also french Bugatti drivers. Veyron won Le Mans in 1939 on a Bugatti type 57.
