Why Putin's $3bn Kerch Bridge is still standing

The latest attack on the Crimea Bridge has once again highlighted its importance to Russia, as well as its vulnerability but surprising resilience.
Also known as the Kerch Bridge, it connects mainland Russia to the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula.
Despite facing two attacks within the past 10 months, the bridge has not been completely severed. Simon Newton outlines six possible reasons why it stands strong.

Another point, possibly, is that if UKR goes ahead and just smashes the bridge out of existence, drops a full span or two, then it's definitely gone. Meaning there's no sense in allocating forces, including air defenses, to protect it against future strikes. So those forces become available to act nearer the front line. But if they just hit it hard enough every so often to temporarily take it out of service but not fully destroy it... Well, then not only does it need to be defended still, but then specialist attention needs to be devoted to repairing it, and that's engineering resources not used in building more fortifications across occupied Ukrainian territory.

I think the use of the term 'civillian' in this video report is incorrect and wholly unacceptable. Why is it that the Antonivka bridge was a valid military target but not the Kerch Strait bridges - which are continually used to transport military supplies and munitions? Does the reporter have any source that states the UK have specifically identified the Kerch Bridges as civillian - and, if so, why has our media and the UK Govt not vehemently protested against the repeated Ukrainian targeting of these major civillian infrastructure items? I suspect IF the UK has forbidden the use of Stormshadow against the Kerch Strait Bridges then it isn't based on any civillian labelling but it is because of fears of nuclear escalation by Putin for British weapons destroying his pet project. As Stormshadow is slow, being transonic and not mach 3 like ATACMS) it is also likely to be shot out of the sky before reaching the Kerch Bridges so it would require a great many Stormshadow missiles and decoys to enable success. This would use up a high proportion of the total supply of these costly missiles, which could be better used in targetting C3 assets. HM Govt could maybe hope to gain some Russian political kudos by letting on that it had forbidden Stormshadow being used on a target that made little tactical sense for this missile type to be used against anyway!

That would mean that the shopping centre that was blown up with a missile by the Russians in the first days of the war was justified because there was an Ukrainian army lorry in the car park. If the installation is mainly used by the civilian population. it's not really a military target. Military installations are generally not open to the public.

In reply to these points: 1. Although the piles go down a hundred meters flying something straight into one, or using a shaped explosive charge should be able to damage it sufficiently. 2. As a major supply route the Kerch bridge is without question a military target. So Ukraine would be completely justified in using those Storm Shadows against it. 3. Being Putin's personal project makes it even more important to take it out. The very public humiliation of having the bridge made completely unusable would seriously undermine Putin. 4. Again not a good reason. Stuff goes across the bridge because it is by far the easiest and most effective way to get it to the front line! 5. There are still other escape routes. Removing what's by far the easiest and quickest one might encourage Orcs to attempt a much earlier escape, and having the bridge cut off would certainly panic them. 6. Does anyone intelligent still seriously think that negotiation with Putin is possible? The man is a deranged psychopath for whom success in Ukraine is now existential. His "removal" from power is an absolute necessity for lasting peace.

I think they were waiting to knock out the bridge until they found a weakness in Russian defenses for their counteroffensive. If they knocked it out before, it could be repaired. But by hitting it right before their counteroffensive culminates, they do 2 things: limit Russian resupply and send a ton of civilian traffic through Donetsk and Zaporizhia (causing more traffic and further complicating Russian logistics). Also, it's complete BS that UK and France (and the US) put that illegal bridge off limits for cruise missiles. It's far more of a military target than the children's hospitals, rail stations, and apartment buildings that Russia has been intentionally hitting for over a year.

The argument about intelligence doesn't really seem that convincing since satellites are presumably just as capable of watching other roads and trains. And as far as being needed to retreat, presumably Russia could withdraw their men via ship (indeed, if Russia agreed to pull their forces out of Crimea I'm sure Ukraine would agree to grant them safe passage). Seems to me it's a combination of 6, keeping Russian forces guarding the bridge and conservation of force. It's hard to attack and once degraded they have to decide if further restricting the flow over the Kerch is worth the effort.

Oh, for sure, the Ukrainians are totally afraid of destroying Putin's bridge lest he gets angry and takes revenge on them. I don't think so some how. This bridge is too massively built to take out so easily? I beg to differ. My son is a civil engineer and works for a firm that builds bridges. He said that this bridge is a lightweight construction clearly designed to be put up fast without a thought for its longevity. The road sections are fabricated out of welded sheet steel and don't look like they are anchored particularly well to their supports. Normally these sections would be made of prestressed concrete which is far tougher. My son told me that a bridge of prestressed concrete road sections would have taken the first attack far better, maybe even without having to close the bridge to road traffic. The second attack seems to corroborate this. Of the 4 or 5 water born drones used in the attack only one will have managed to get through and detonate under a road section. This drone cannot carry a big charge, but it was enough to lift the road section from its anchoring. No, this bridge is not at all well built or massive. Why the Ukrainians haven't taken the bridge out yet has nothing to do with its design.

The West builds light solely to save money and then doesn't replace at the consequently short predicted usable life of the structure. Building heavy lasts longer. That's why the Colosseum is still there. That's why the Iron Bridge in Ironbridge is still there. It's a sensible, and honest, approach.

Picked up by others but who has deemed this bridge as a civilian asset? That's right Russia, it is a legitimate military target that has been used to transport military equipment into Crimea. Surprised you said that?? Also heard that it will eventually collapse on its own as built on silt (don't know how true) which is why the land bridge to Crimea was an important goal of Russia early on and one of the goals of Ukraine to cut it and then drop the bridge from the Azov sea.

  • @everTriumph

The Kerch bridge is a valid military target by all accepted measures. Ukraine was careful to attack in the very early morning when civilians are safe abed.

I think that the main reason not to attack the bridge this year was the grain-transport deal. The bridge and port of Odessa both get attacked withing 24 hours of russia saying it won't extend the deal. I know that the bridge is well defended - but if the Ukrainians were trying hard the russians would be celebrating multiple failed attacks, and they haven't

Powerfull missiles attacking nearby ammo & fuel depots, but only some small drone boats against the bridge. The Ukrainians have proven they can hit the bridge, hard. The bridge is history, as soon as it suits the Ukrainians. They did the same with the Antonovsky Bridge at Kherson: Damage it so only light vehicles and foot soldiers could escape. 🔱🌻 Slava Ukraini! Heroyam Slava! Stay safe! 💙💛

Ukraine will not now accept a Russian presence at Sevastopol, let alone accept Crimea's continued occupation. The UN and the vast majority of the international community still recognise Crimea as an integral part of a sovereign Ukraine. As Ukraine sees no separation between the 2014 invasions and those of 2022, during any peace negotiation it would indist a call for return to status quo ante status to mean a return to its 2013 borders.
