It's not that we keep getting tricked into it but rather we just deal with it because its part of the norm
I thought the original reason for doing this was so that the cashier doesn't pocket the bills. They are forced to open the cash register to give the customer change when it isn't an exact amount.
This has been a concerted attack against people with OCD and I am one of them

I thougth when it was that you need to pay 1 cent we wouldnt really care about the price and they get a profit of 1 cent and thar adds up quickly😅
