What Happens When You Procrastinate Too Much
Ғылым және технология
There's a reason why people are such bad procrastinators. It's easy: Procrastinating feels great. But it's not so great for your brain since it pits two of your brain's heavy hitters, your limbic system, and your prefrontal cortex into a literal head-to-head match.

What Happens When You Procrastinate Too Much
Following is a transcript of the video:
Most of us have procrastinated at some point in our lives. But about one in every five of us are compulsive about it. Putting off tasks and chores nearly every chance they get.
They’re called chronic procrastinators. And it turns out, this behavior does a lot more damage than you might think.
We get it, doing work is hard.
But when you choose to watch tv over doing laundry or washing the dishes you’ve just launched an all-out battle in your brain.
On one side is your prefrontal cortex. That’s the part of your brain that sets long-term goals and regulates self-control. It’s telling you that those dishes aren’t going to clean themselves.
On the opposing side is your limbic system. It deals with pleasure, arousal, and reward.
And it’s telling you that washing dishes is no fun, and you’ll have a better time doing something else. So, procrastination essentially puts your brain in its happy place.
It feels good. That’s why you do it. But just because it feels good doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you.
For example, several studies have found that undergraduate college students who procrastinated had a lower GPA in the latter half of the semester compared to non-procrastinators.
They were also more likely to get sick, based on their healthcare visits.
Moreover, other studies have found that procrastinators report higher levels of guilt and anxiety when they choose to procrastinate in the first place.
And if you keep it up, researchers have found that chronic procrastination is linked to: low self-confidence, Low energy, And depression.
Overall, your quality of life will probably be worse, than if you just listened to your prefrontal cortex. And you may think that you just have a different workflow or that you perform better under pressure.
But, sorry to say, there are no studies to support any benefits of chronic procrastination. Bottom line: it’s unhealthy. But not all hope is lost.
In fact, researchers have conducted dozens of scientific studies in search for ways to help procrastinators. What they’ve found time and again is that how you think about tasks can make a huge difference in how likely you are to procrastinate on them.
Tasks like saving for retirement, for example, can be abstract: There’s no immediate deadline, so you can always start tomorrow. And it’s this mentality that can lead you to procrastinate.
Instead, make your tasks more concrete in your mind.
For example, a study in 2011 discovered that people given an illustration of how they might look at retirement age were more likely to say they would save money for retirement, than people without an illustration.
The image was something tangible. And, therefore, painted a more concrete picture of their inevitable future.
Whatever the task, do your health a favor and do the work. You might just enjoy that tv show even more once you get to it.

It's the worst when you feel too guilty to do something fun, but can't get yourself to work either, so you're stuck in this unpleant state of wasting time while you could have been working or at least procrastinating in a fun way.

So many people act as if we choose to procrastinate. Or as if it's just some behavior ir mentality that we do. Chronic procrastination is a real issue that we have no control over. We can't just break the habit and we can't just do our work. That's like telling a depressed person that going outside will make them feel better. It's not that simple. We genuinely cannot bring ourselves to do it.

I have a crippling perfectionism that doesn’t let me do more than the barest essentials until it’s almost too late and that’s when I get motivation. I hate having to keep people waiting if I’m helping their case in some capacity but I’ve been telling myself that it’s going to improve for the longest time and it just doesn’t budge as a rule. Look into having ADHD - attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. It explained a lot for me.
“If you had just listened to that good ole pre-frontal cortex” Saying things like this just exacerbates the problem and contributed to even higher levels of “guilt, low confidence, and depression”. The persuasion by fear only goes so far before it becomes even more paralyzing than before watching the video at all. Chronic procrastination is a product of fear and irrationality. By trying to scare the scared more and saying this like “Just...” probably isn’t the best technique.
I wish videos about procrastinating stopped emphasizing how bad it is. I know it's bad, but starting by talking about that only makes me anxious, and not more motivated to stop procrastinating, because I wanted to stop procrastinanting in the first place anyway.
My problem is that I procrastinate A LOT yet still end up getting good grades. So I have no real reason to stop (except for my sanity lol)

I think what many scientists neglect in these studies is how anhedonia, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental conditions, caused by the daily grind or adverse/abusive conditioning throughout youth development, can compel ppl to NOTwork hard, not try, desperately cling to positive stimulants because we're so starved for the healthy, standard, regulated dose of dopamine, we're mistreated enough to go from extroverts as kids, to introverts (or those with implosive emotional reactions) as adults due to oppression in or outside the home. So we now drudge ourselves along out of obligation to survive, but still crippled by our circumstances enough that we put off important things for just a bit more of a vice or distraction.

I think procrastination is linked to the inability to know from where to start the particular. You can either mentally prepare yourself before starting it by planning it and breaking it down into smaller tasks. Also, listening music especially rock or metallica helps with concentration and anxiety.
After 2 years, finally decided to watch it..
No matter what happens, you're still you. You are where you are and everything is alright. You got to stop resisting the feeling of procrastination in order for you to move forward. This is an important first step to feeling better about taking action.

Adds the video to watch later list *
Do I procrastinate because I'm depressed. Or am I depressed because I procrastinate?
*saves to watch later*
As a guy who is grade 12 student in senior high, I procrastinate one, I mean one of the most important parts, its actually work immersion, I need to pass my requirements before the deadline, I spend one week procrastinating it, and i have to settle it asap. Also thank you for the information and knowledge that you show to us Sir.👍
on the first day of school as a very severe procrastinator I tried to finish my assignments on time, the reason was quite ridiculous because I thought the google classroom could not be late or would be closed, one night I was late in sending a video assignment, I cried because I was afraid that my video could not be sent, there I swear I will be diligent, and after finding out that it can still be sent even though I'm late I start to be lazy to send assignments or even forget about
This video inspired me
I needed this. I'm procrastinating right now😂😂😂
The only sad thing is that there's nothing you can change about being a procrastinator. Doing courses won't help.
The first thing I did on seeing this video in my recommendations was adding it to my watch LATER list😂
Meant to be doing homework right now :)
I don’t procrastinate too often, but sometimes it’s so hard to be motivated enough to complete an assignment. I try to gather some motivation to be productive but because it’s so feeble I have to cling onto it. Or something comes up to break my flow and it’s annoying. I have a few days left to finish my assignment but by keep thinking about the task and not getting much done is so frustrating, it doesn’t helps my periods are messing with my mood. :(
one time my friend procrastinated on a project we had 2 weeks to work on and he had to do it the day before it was due
I'm crying because i cannot do the work because of procastination
Another awesome video
I have so many subjects with many chapters to read for my exams which are coming up in about 10 days.... I've been "planning" everything. That I would read atleast a chapter a day.... Look where I am now :) I'm feeling so darn scared, like- I think I'll go and jump off a cliff or drink some bleach 😐☠️
*saves this video for later
"Do the work RIGHT NOW. You might even enjoy that TV show even more, once you get to it." IF, you get to it ^-^" There's always more to be done, and when first I've shifted into "doing" mode, it's hard to stop. To the point where I end up procrastinating bedtime, from continuing to do what needs done ^-^" For the rest, thus vid hits a little too close to home ^-^"
"I'm a procrastinator, if you don't know what that means then I will tell you later"
Maybe, just maybe, is not the procastination that causes the depression, low self steem and anxiety, but the opposite? maybe? just fuckin maybe???

I agree more with the video. It feels horrible when you procrastinate, but once you're to used to do it you can help it and you feel even worse. Since you feel bad you procrastinate even more. It's a vicious circle.

But what the hell drives people to procastinate *chronically* ???

@@KhalerJex Sometimes you just feel overwhelmed with all the stuff you have to do, for example, in my first year at college I was having a hard time with the subjects and I didn't want to sit down to study and do the exercises because I didn't understand shit. Therefore, I started studying too late, I did bad in the exams and I felt horrible because I knew I had wasted my time and that everything would had been right if I'd started studying earlier. Then I felt lack of self-confidance because I thought I wasn't good enough for my degree. As soon as I stopped procrastinating that much and I improved my grades, I started feeling fine again. So, in my case, the reason of chronical procrastination was having to do many things at the same time without knowing how to start.

This is your personal experience. I wanna know about it in the broader scale. Actually, I might have already told you what causes it in broader scale.
