Djibouti, a small but extremely strategically located country in the Horn of Africa, has become the focal point for various foreign military powers since 2002 including the United States, France and China. They have the remarkable distinction of being the only country in the entire world that plays hosts to both US and Chinese military bases. In fact the two bases here are so close they could play footsies with each other, only separated by 11 kilometers or a quick 17 minute drive.
Both the United States and China are now competing for favor with the nation. Since 2009 China has been Djibouti’s largest trading pattern. The nation is now heavily indebted to China through their belt and road initiative.

Key concepts from this video: -Djibouti is small and weirdly shaped, but strategically located. -The French were the first to penetrate Djibouti. -The United States is currently all over Djibouti. -Everyone has to pay if they want to be in Djibouti. -Everything passes through Djibouti. -The Chinese have been doing naughty things in Djibouti.

Is it possible that Djibouti got its name inspiration from the musical "The Music Man"? Buddy Hacket sings these lyrics in "Shipoopi" (sounds like Djibouti) : She's the girl you're glad you found She's your shipoopi Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi The girl who's hard to get Shipoopi, shipoopi, shipoopi But you can win her yet Shipoopi is the hard to get "Girl" (Djibouti) that many major national militaries are tying "to get". Major countries are trying to "win her yet"..... This is a great episode, illustrating how much I should know about geopolitics and yet are completely clueless about. Thank for helping me become a bit less clueless.

One thing not mentioned that ive heard before is that the only deep water port is next to the chinese base. so anything we ship by sea over there is very close to the chinese.

@@alexberkowitz5897 he's not wrong though. All in all and looking at it critically, they're actually doing a great job and far better than any foreign especially Western nation has done. And let's be real here, any "corruption" or whatever is not really much a China issue but more the nation China is operating in issue since it's them that's corrupt and took the loans that China was too stupid and risky to give out but those politicians involved just pocketed the money. The Chinese "threat" outside China and the South China Sea / West Philippines Sea is highly overinflated and misunderstood to the point that the Americans are a far greater threat than even the Chinese. Like seriously, look at the size of the bases in Djibouti and what is actually placed there. Compared to the Americans, the Chinese just look like they sent their weakest unit to stay there.

It really is a great policy until you read the fine print. Most nations that have signed up for the Belt and road initiative/silk road are now filling complaints that will not work. Simply put all the infrastructure that china built for these nations hardly last a year or 2 and china own local resources, land and/or debt that none of theses nations could pay back essentially become vassal(Slave Nations) for China.

Spent some time on that base in 2010 when I spent 6 months in the Red Sea/gulf of Aden. Vbss coxswain so I got to visit a bunch of fishing skiffs and learned all about that green plant they love to chew and hold in their cheeks like chew/dip/zyns. We didn’t get to pull into any cool places because of the geography location so the Bob hope galley was a big hit for not just me but the whole crew of my ship. We pulled in twice and cleaned them out the first time so the second time the rules changed lol. Too damn hot

Aside from the funny “not to scale” errors, your video is great! My opinion: China’s presence is a check against possible embargoes at that point. The low level espionage shows that they need finer details on how to disable potential adversaries. I think that tiny country needs those bases on its soil because Ethiopia would conquer Djibouti faster than Putin if there were no militaries there. Trump will probably renegotiate the rental/lease costs. (A joke, no really…) Djibouti is great for whenever Persian gulf turns hot and U.S. assets need to retreat from Kuwait and Qatar. You’re doing fantastic, keep Up the good work!
