Could you possibly clarify when we run into phono-semantic compounds in the future? 🙂 Phonetic:人 Semantic: 一 That would make memorisation of the many many psc easier Love the series, by the way. I'm signing up for your patreon now. Keep producing great content, please 🥳
Teochew has the old Chinese pronunciation which is “chaie1”, and to say one thousand we say “jek4 chaie1 (蜀千)” instead of 一千, and to say thousands we don’t just use 千, we say “lung7 chaie1 (輪千)” and at around 10 thousand it’s 輪萬 (lung7 bhuang7)

I knew this as RAS syndrome - redundant acronym syndrome syndrome.
I think it's super interesting that two word that had the same pronunciation ended up sounding super different in a bunch of languages. Tsien went to sen and jin in Japanese and qian and ren in Mandarin. I wonder if the other words commonly used around these words made led to the divergence.

The pronunciation difference in other languages is likely because they borrowed the sounds in different periods of Chinese history, since the language has evolved a lot. In addition, the sounds in different languages changed over time, but if you listen closely they sound reminiscent of tshien
Do people really say ATM Machine?
