Why New Yorkers Swear By Papaya King's Hot Dog And Fruit Juice Combo | Legendary Eats
Papaya King has cemented itself as a cheap-eat institution in NYC. But before it became a New Yorker’s go-to for hot dogs, it sold something else entirely. Insider’s Taryn Varricchio headed to Papaya King to find out why New Yorkers flock to the 80-year-old location for its hot dog and tropical drink combo.

tre Ya he does
Papaya has an enzyme, papain, that breaks down proteins. When the Spanish conquistadores arrived in Tenochtitlan, they were received with a big feast. They had indigestion, and the natives brought them papaya to eat to help with the indigestion. Get yourself some raw papaya and put chunks of it with its juice in a bag, add the toughest cut of meat, and it will tenderize it like butter overnight.

Michael I have a fast food restaurant in chicago. Been open since 1972. What is chicago fast food known for? Hot dogs. Neighborhood is now gentrified so people who live here are not born and raised here. I had to change (upgrade) some sandwiches . While the hot dog stays untouched it slowly decreases every year.

@@saad.485 I am not anxious to make decisions. If i see too many items on a menu i know that the restaurant is most likely not capable of doing all of them perfectly. Honestly, I don’t like them. The hot dogs are too skinny for me so the bread to meat ratio is off
Loved the vibe and flow of this compared to many. I think the host played a big part in this. Would watch more like this.
These are good. Last time I ate this was 1989 when I lived in NY. Working part time in the city
Omg! I could still taste the food till this day!
New favorite food channel!!! Your editing is fantastic. Great dialogue, great interviews
Love Papaya King. Fond memories of going there with my dad. Unfortunately, the last time I was there, the papaya juice was watered down. It wasn't as frothy as it used to be. I hope that was a bad batch because it's the papaya drinks that make Papaya King.

Covid put a major dent in supply, now restauranteurs are cutting costs to offset the bad economy. It's happening everywhere. Last time I got my fav fried rice here in Asia the portion was like a kid's plate...still for $9

Great video keep it up!
My grandparents lived down the block on 3rd. The 3rd Ave. El ran right outside their apartment window. We used to get to go to Papaya King as a treat - this was around 1950 - 1953. The documentary says it was renamed “Papaya King” in 1963 - but I remember it was always called “Papaya King” a decade earlier - I learned the name of the place when I was about 5 or 6 years old. I haven't been to Manhattan since 1957 - but if I did, going to Papaya King would be one of the main reasons to go there. And maybe the Met - but if I only had an hour or so, I'd skip the Met, and go to Papaya King.

It’s still there, looking, smelling, and tasting like it always has! 👍🏻 it’s the only thing in the neighborhood that hasn’t at the very least changed owners. It’s literally the staple of the area

Jordan Is that an actual Papaya Juice. Im from a tropical country... no such thing as papaya juice. no one even wants it for a shake. but i always thought perhaps it can be sold as a drink. Do they make it fresh???

Andrew Clarke well, coz papaya juice dont exist in some places where it is abundant. But if it sells in NYC, I thought perhaps it can sell elsewhere. Papaya shakes may be existing. but it is not close to how everyone knows mango or avocado shakes.

It’s soooooo good. Omg. A must have if you’re not just visiting, but want some local favs. Also, go to a local deli/bodega and order a chopped cheese.
Theres a ramen place next door that i used to go to until they moved locations and i never thought to walk in to papaya king. Had no idea it was a special new york thing
I used to live in Manhattan and went there once but hopefully one day I can return
I had it once and I can’t forget it. It really was the best 🙂

They had that recession special up until about 10 years ago, when it was $2.50 for two dogs and a drink.
My cousin Mr Sum Yong Wang owns a hot dog stall in China also. His meat products are sourced from pests and insects so are very sustainable and low impact on the environment. This allows him to keep prices low to feed low income families at minimal cost. The most popular item is the Crazy Wang Deal which includes a McWang Dog, Fried Rice and bubble tea drink with extra pearl.
Tri faith house 86th and 1st. Short walk from the joint. It never disappoints.

Been there before. Every time I go to the Big Apple, I will go to this spot, and my next stop will be White Castle's. Then a NYC slice with extra cheese. We don't have this kind of food in Houston TX.
NYC food is the best food because it's simple food . Easy , quick, cheap, movable and most of all just tastey !!
My uncle comes in from Palm Beach. After I picked him up at LGA (pre-Covid), he always stopped at Papaya King for two dogs w/mustard & kraut, then to his hotel.

Hot dogs are a classic 😍🌭 God bless every person on those streets selling for a living 🙌🏼💙
There's a food truck her run Central Florida that does a similar thing, but with a different take on it. Place is called Kona Dog, and they offer hot dogs in a sweet bun that's been hollowed out from the top and your choice of sauces, including a selection of fruit or fruit mix ones like coconut, pineapple, or mango mustard. Sounds/looks a look unusual but it's delicious.
