I just did lol, 2 years in my bathroom fixture failed after a year for the first time, the first time diagnosed it as the switch,, (it's a proprietary switch with a driver integrated in it) I got a new switch for free, it worked but now it's failed again and I'm sure it's the driver. This was a $300 bathroom fixture from a big box store. I haven't had any issues with the 40 pot lights I installed though.

I find it harder each year to find incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, not to mention the cost. The LED panels are supposed to last 50K hours, that's almost 6 years of continuous use. I have a screw-in LED bulb in a lamp that never gets turned off except during power failures. It has been on for at least 13 years.

It's called planned obsolescence, it means that failure is built into the product in the design itself usually outside of the warranty period, this forces consumers to have to buy again. It is a disgusting practice that causes physical waste from faulty products thrown away and waste of money. The consumer and the environment lose and the industry wins. My Ikea led ceiling lamp has failed after about two years, I work in electronics so I was able to take it apart but it is built in a way to prevent the led element from being opened, it was difficult opening it but with my work skills, some repurposed tools and a lot of patience I was able to do it. Not a single led bulb is burnt out, nothing looks burnt out. I am going to have to dig deeper to diagnose what the fault is. I noticed when I put it on there was a noise like a click click then a clock second tick, tick, tick tick tick and then the click click again, it keeps repeating over and over. Deepai thinks it's the led driver. I will try to fix this as a diy project and to defeat planned obsolescence.

Built in integrated LED is a terrible idea. I built a brand new home and installed these integrated built in LED fixtures, around 5 years later 90% of them failed, or started flickering, of half dead. Only the replaceable LED bulbs are a good idea, but definitely NOT recommending the integrated build in LED light fixtures.

They're failing due to poor cooling. Especially if they're using a plastic housing. All led light fixtures for ceiling should have some sort of metal housing or heatsink to aid in cooling. Learn a little basic soldering, and you should be able to fix them if they aren't too hard to get into. Then you can also add a heatsink in at the same time if you want. You can easily buy heatsinks of all shapes and sizes online along with thermal pads/epoxy. What happens is the fixture heats up and cools down, but since they get so hot the soldered components expand and contract/warp (thermal cycling is death to electronics) causing the solder joints to crack, especially if they don't use leaded solder.

Try replacing the light switch. I had the same problem in two light sockets after I switched to LED bulbs. Switches can corrode over time, allowing a small amount of electricity to 'leak' through. Not enough to be visible with an incandescent bulb, but visible with an LED. Hope that helps.

That's what stops me too. I don't rent my home out, but I still don't like the idea of wasting an entire fixure, just because the light itself needs to be switched out. I don't want to have to rewire anything unnecessarily, either. Honestly, next time I have to do that, I'm probably going to wire a plug in that spot, instead of a ceiling light, and just start hanging plug-in lights instead. I've even started boning up on how to turn hard wired chandeliers into plug-ins, so I can do the rest of my home the same way.

THe diodes are rated for 10 years but most drivers only last 5, in ideal circumstances. Many don't think of the power surges that go through the house, like when the power goes out. Also, many manufacturers offer a warranty on their LED fixtures. Want to avoid a matching situation in case of failure...buy a couple extra pr keep all your purchase documentation for warranty claims. LED is a much more efficient and cost effective upgrade for any home.

I have yet to see one of these fail, and the ones we've installed years ago now are still available. And honestly, even if your whole house was set up with these things, if one failed in one room, you could just replace that room with a similar model. You wouldn't need to redo the whole house. While a dedicated fixture with replaceable bulbs is preferable, I don't think it is a huge thing to fuss over if you like the LED pucks.

I did have an issue with my porch light going out on me after having it only a few months ago, but my electric bill has shown a difference, so I replaced a few more lights with led. You can get them do long as your prepared with a few extras. Most of them will last, but then you might get a few that won't, but at least you'll be ready. For the most part, I only get the integrated kind if I don't need it to match anything else. Honestly though, if you have one that fails, it could be that it's defective, but it could also be something related to your electrical system. For example, if they are non-dimmable and you have a dimming switch, that might have noticable effects on the lifetime of the light. Dimmable LEDs with incompatible dimmers can have similar effects. You may notice these effects when it always seems to be the same light that keeps needing replacement. These days though, I'm more likely to just change the light because I want a different light profile. I hardly need to change any of my LEDs, integrated or not, because it stopped working. Defective lights were more of a thing when they were first introduced, and a lot of it had to do with bad designs for dissipating the heat.

Call me crazy if you like but I have this exact same fear which is why I've gone to restores and thrift stores finding matching fixtures that I can continue to use LED screw in bulbs to get the best of both worlds. I thought I was going to be high Tech and fancy and bought some porch lights that were LED and matched and lo and behold one of them doesn't come on when it gets cold, great! they no longer make those so now! So change both out? I was looking for efficiency and that aint it! Just more trash in the landfill! that's when I changed my direction and now I just changed the bulb when I need to! Here's the problem with going with those EPA estimates yeah that looks great and that's best case scenario probably in a lab at that. Just like with those screw in LED replacements I'm thinking wow 20 years or whatever it was, yea right, 2 years Max! If I'm lucky. Maybe this is just a sign of my age but I'm sticking with replaceable, rebuildable stuff because I've been burned a few times by these throw away fixtures, which just seems so crazy to me. But then again I don't change my wardrobe every season either lol.

I've had a few of my LED bulbs last 6+ years so far. 😅 🤷‍♂️ Quality made and properly cooled they last awhile. If they're overheating they tend to die out I've found. (High Lumen/High wattage passive cooled)

Thus you suggest using LED bulbs and using standard lighting fixtures? Easier to change bulbs that fixture..

  • @revdev1032

Regular Bulb Fixtures are better, durable and more cost effective, you can simply screw in an led a21 if the space isn’t bright or the regular if A21s doesn’t fit

They try to justify it by saying that these LEDs will last for many years. But if you get more than 8 of these, I can almost guarantee one of them will go out much sooner than advertised. LED fixtures have lots of electronics inside to convert the AC to DC. Lots of tiny little parts that can go bad. Usually a capacitor is the culprit.

  • @exoticcar5482

    @exoticcar5482

    Жыл бұрын

It's mainly the smoothing capacitor that's supposed to smooth out the flicker of the AC so the DC feed is of a higher frequency and the LEDs flicker less that causes this. Almost all makes use electrolytic capacitors that have limited lifetimes and can easily fail and mispulse the DC causing the now all too familiar strobing

Just had a tenant move move out so had to get in rental to clean , paint etc…. to get ready to rent out again. Before we first started renting out this house about 7 years ago we did change most fixtures. Old house fixtures were good but 50 years old so was just modernizing. All these fixtures we changed were 2 or more bulbs , only COB led was a bathroom fixture. Last tenant must like living in a cave. Of about 30 bulbs , less then 5 working in whole house.

Patriot Lighting from Menards, has a 5 year warranty that they allegedly do NOT honor because that exact style was discontinued. So, if you want to use Patriot Lighting, you keep your receipt, and take them up on that warranty and when you are denied, you sue them into oblivion for having fake warranties. Or, you do the better move, and just do it right in the first place and put these morons out of business and get the better lights.

A lot of these lights have a separate plate that the LEDs are installed on. That could be swapped out with a different fixture if you really wanted to keep the look the same.

LEDs suck. They don’t last nearly as long as it says and you can’t simply replace the LED. Going bad to bulb fixtures and be done.

They were never tested to boast a 50 year life span. That was marketing garbage. They needed a way to get everyone to switch to reduce wattage so the brown outs wouldn’t be as obvious getting you all to switch over to electric vehicles. EV’s are the compact fluorescent of the auto industry .

Here's a thought...dont buy cheap LED lights from big box stores. You're just asking for trouble. Pay the extra money and purchase from reliable companies that warranty their products for 5 years or more. Dont skimp. Most reliable companies use better diodes that last longer the more they are used.

  • @John-bs5ug

They are all just cheap junk made in China. You don't see any LEDs claiming to have a "28 year" life like you used to. Most of what's on the market today don't even claim to last half as long as that, and may will go bad far sooner than the supposed life anyway because the "life" of an LED is nothing more than an extrapolation based how much brightness it loses after being on continuously for 5000 hrs; it's not a real life number that was actually tested for the number of hours it claims to work.

I live in a somewhat slummy apartment that uses superficial aesthetic like this. The week we moved in, the kitchen fixture fell on me, and I'm glad it was so lightweight. They also spray painted the bathroom sink and shower stall, rendering them unsafe and ugly once the paint peeled off.

Integrated fixtures are popular but they won't be for everyone. If cost is your primary motive you should opt for a light fixture with replacement bulbs. People who choose integrated fixtures are generally making a purchase based on achieving a specific look to their lighting design where design and style is important. In that case, it's best to go with an established brand and that will cost more per fixture. Cheap lights like the ones you've shown are unreliable and should be avoided.
