Why MOST Players Can’t Dribble around Cones

In this video I show you why most amateur players struggle with this one simple cone exercise and how the 2nd cone is often the main culprit for mistakes. I'll break down some simple techniques to help you go from amateur of the cones, to speed demon & mastering them once and for all. I hope you enjoy!
Cones are pretty much a staple for all aspiring footballers, whether it's shooting, passing or dribble drills it's important to get used to navigating them. I'll show you how to simplify the most popular drill to increase your speed & control of the cones, whilst highlighting some of the most common mistakes young players make, so that we can all learn together.
I hope you take some good lessons away from this one.
Cheers Folks,
Tony

I’ll certainly add it to the list 😁 In the meantime I can’t give you some advice - I always like to remember to take many small touches with a very soft foot (using the inside and outside of the boot), whilst being on my tippy toes, knees bent and arms out for balance. Try doing this at a slow pace and once you get comfortable with it, increase pace to resemble a match situation. This will ensure the ball remains close to you and under your control. It’s going to take plenty of practice and repetition, so enjoy the process 😁 Bonus tip: try and keep yourself between the ball and the defender to better protect the ball (unless you’re driving directly at defender - in this case you’ll want to try and shift the ball quickly to get it past them)

His tips but also you gotta start doing ball mastery drills. Ik that they’re basic but after doing them for a little bit you’ll see some intermediate ones that you can actually use in a game but either way start from basics one move at a time (I made the mistake of trying to split most of them up but for me it didn’t work) if you’re a beginner beginner start on toe taps (for 60 seconds in a row) and after you master that go to other beginner drills and you’ll get better

There’s a drill my old coach taught me, I could do it backwards before the pandemic. It’s made me a respected dribbler among my peers, despite my position in defence, as I could turn so quickly it would throw my opponent way off. I recognised the moves of your feet in the first 15 seconds of the intro. I’m very grateful to Mr Stu for the time and effort he put into train our school team. I’m not as good as I claim to be but I’ll keep trying to improve, thanks coach! Edit: to all the people wondering what drill I’m talking about it’s basically this one but without the cones. Outside of the right foot, then the inside, then switch to the left. Outside of left foot, then inside, then switch back to right and repeat. After you master this you can start increasing and decreasing the weight of specific touches, causing you to turn and change direction as you dribble. Then just do it backwards… it takes a while, I have some trouble now after the pandemic because I didn’t have much time to practice during and then I had an ingrown toenail (I know, gross right?!) which bothered my left foot constantly and I needed multiple surgeries to get it fixed (I’m just recovering from the final one). But this drill really helps if you can master it… maybe I should try it with cones now?

@@rekkuzashinee8730 I simply jog backwards while doing inside/outside with the feet. I mean, I don't know what else to say. It helps a lot with coordination and balance. Once you can do it slowly walking backwards (the ball would be at your feet and you'd be tapping it behind you as you go) you can pick up speed and try jogging backwards. For in-game situations it really just helps when I have a bad first touch and the ball goes behind, then I need to quickly turn and go back to the goalkeeper (I play fullback). Honestly, no one dribbles backwards so it's really only for coordination, balance and agility.

the most overlooked thing when it comes to change of direction is movement of the shoulders and overall twisting of your upper body while keeping feet squared. the reason it helps is you have the most control of the ball when its inside or outside of your foot but going forwards its in front of you so to keep it in control the ball should be under you.. shoulders initiating change of direction has been a game changer for me parcitularly and it doesnt need to be very pronounced and look like a clown but subtle. when you compare different types of dribblers for example look at ronaldinho and neymar in particular then you can compare with vinicius jr whose dribbling is more linear, or marcus rashford. rashford and vinicius can be great when there is space in a 1 on 1 while neymar and ronaldinho can take on 2 or 3 defenders at once albeit slower but you cant take the ball away from them and theres a subtle movement of the shoulders when they change direction, especially ronaldinho

You know what i really struggle with? Getting pass an opponent when i have the ball. Something I've noticed was that i seem to just stop in front of them when i get too close to them. For example: i got a pass, then i run towards the defender and then stop them look at the ball and then whatever i do they just poke it and it's all gone. I've never got past anyone even once. 12 years of football and never got past anybody. Even kids!! I've always passed it to someone else when i get the ball but i want to get pass players on my own. I really like your channel because instead of channels like all attack. You seem to really understand what we struggle with. Those channels are probably made for those who are already good and want to get better. But your channel just seems to be for people like me who are stuck at level 1.

Hey Cadis! Thanks so much for the comment, I’m going to make a video on this in the coming week to hopefully help explain it in a lot more detail :) Would would be great for you to try now, and what I find most effective, is to continue to run at the defenders head on, taking as many small touches as possible, and as you get close to the defender, try and push the ball past them (ideally into space) whilst keeping your speed and momentum. As I said, I’ll try and break this down alot more for you in the coming weeks, but let me know how you get on with that.

@@thefootballfolk I tried experimenting. And ended up colliding a lot. I experimented with it first was trying to run pass them when gap between us was close, and i ended up colliding with them and also stumbling over their legs and a lot of times they just knew where i was going and just blocked it (all of this before reading the comment.) . Second was kicking it forward and running up to the ball and they ended up cutting my path to the ball. Tried it once again and i thought it worked but they were just faster, tried again and they just blocked it. It almost felt like as if someone did half leg split. I could nutmeg them but I'd have to run 90° from where i was going and then get pass them because their legs get in the way. Few things i did notice was when I came with enough speed, a lot of them came close and then started to run backwards , few of them poked once. Another thing was, a lot of times i ended up running straight to the defender as if I'm trying to fight with them. I'll look forward to your video! And try what you've said here.

@@mocerlaalacbaino What helped me over the last couple years since I am not a proficiant dribbler, but more so just someone who relatively fast. Like he said in small touches keep the ball close and just decelerate a little bit like 2-3 m before I get there just to explosively run in another direction. What also helped is just becoming comfortable with having the defender at my neck and keeping myself between the ball and him (though I am tall, so I guess that why it works), that way even with only a little bit of bad dribbling you can usually get around a lotta ppl or free yourself enough for a pass/shoot

With younger players, I have found a great way to help the rhythm issue is by doing ladder drills. Many say you shouldn't bother doing those with younger kids but i think that's silly. They teach the kids a lot of the basic footwork you'll need for things like this. Specifically, the icky shuffle. Great for getting them used to cutting and moving side to side. And definitely great for helping them develop that rhythm. It also improves awareness of their body. My kid struggled with a lot of these drills. Started doing ladder drills twice a week and there was significant improvement in how well he did these type of drills after just 3 weeks. Plus, I've never really played soccer so I know it works. I'm able to do a lot of drills myself bc I still have the basic footwork down from years of playing football

And if it’s with higher intensity (later in the session) you could do 3-5 reps, 4-8 sets. I also like to incorporate cones when ever I’m shooting. So you can do them throughout the entire session. Thankfully dribbling has always been my best ability. Grew up playing in a run down council estate back in the 2000s and kicking a tennis ball around my house all day and still do. I almost exclusively played "cuppy singles" growing up; which is where there is one goal keeper and a battle royal of outfield players all against each other. The best ways to win were to be a great dribbler, have a great long shot or be lazy goal mounger and wait for a rebound. Spent every school night and weekend trying to dribble through swarms of players and shoot from distance. But unfortunately I developed zero game sense, discipline, positioning or teamwork and hated playing for my local team. But yeah, always have a ball with you. Nut meg everyone who walks by you, nutmeg your pets, dribble the ball whilst you're walking to the fridge, keepy ups whilst your watching TV, chip the ball into your washing machine, rainbow flick bar stools, balnce the ball on your head whilst chilling on the couch, balance the ball on your foot whilst your on your phone, dribble around the mess on the floor, pretend the radiator is a goal and put a hoover and some shoes in front of it as a makeshift keeper, whatever creative things you can think of. Question from a 19 year old guy aspiring to kick his friends' asses at football: should you look at the ball while doing cone dribbling drills? I know you're supposed to keep the ball in your peripheral vision dribbling in an open space in a real game, but in the examples shown here it looks like he's looking straight at it.

when I played football (years ago) I was very good at dribbling during a game but I was completely a mess with cones, my coach was mad at me about that, 6 close cones like that? no way ahahahahahah

It's probably because, during the pandemic did you play? It's normal that you didn't go outside much during COVID because of restrictions, hence your gameplay will inevitably drop. If you start playing the same amount that you did before the pandemic then you will surely get that skill back eventually. If that doesn't happen, you will have to regularly exercise to improve.

Great advice!! I would have to agree. Just get the reps back in the body and with time you’ll return and then surpass your previous level. Keep at it ❤
