The way I see it, C418 wants to continue owning his own music while Microsoft wants to own the rights of vanilla Minecraft's content. Owning his music means Microsoft can use it in other forms of the ip like in spinoff games.

When the terraria music played, I realized that terraria and Minecraft go at very different paces. Minecraft more slow and calm, but in terraria you can always see constant movement no matter where you go. The reason that the town day song would never work in Minecraft is purely because of the pace difference of the games.

I'm not saying that I don't like Lena Raine's work, for example, but when I launch Minecraft, the menu soundtrack makes me feel a sad for no reason, while the old versions (Legacy versions) were perfect for a menu to sit and customize your new world, skins, whatever... *just wanted to add that I loved Pigstep as a disc, probably one of my favorites

I found the nether music fine as it really fit the atmosphere.. but when they added new tracks for the Overworld/Menu.. it just doesn’t land right. I make exception for the Deep Dark/Ancient City music though for Overworld music. Lena Raine is great at otherworldly.. but the music for the Overworld/Menu isn’t right for the style of the game too much so. Only thing I can say is I made a resource pack to outright stop the new Overworld/Menu music playing so it’s all only C418 music on my Realm minus the Nether and Deep Dark. Only issue is I will have to revise it as I learned they really set the volume for new music way too high. Example being C418 music internally is set to like 10-30% (only 1 track 10% and one 30%, all the rest is 20%).. all of Lena’s work is set to 40%.. or more I believe for Deep Dark.

for fans of Minecraft's OG music, i highly recommend exploring C418's other works, they really showcase his versatility as an artist. personally, my favorite album of his is '148', which actually features a few Minecraft remixes from the original soundtrack (such as Vierton, Aria Math, and Biome Party, not to mention a gorgeous remix of Droopy Ricochets and Droopy Remembers). additionally, i highly recommend 'Life Changing Moments Seem Minor in Pictures', 'Excursions', and 'One'. What amazes me about C418 is his ability to maintain that signature Minecraft-ian sound; beautiful, lush, full chord progressions, while being able to completely change styles with fast, upbeat, tempos, with driving synths, and what can only be described as pure electronica. C418 is honestly a huge inspiration to me as an artist, he manages to breathe so much life into digital music. truly one of the GOATs!

I definitely don't like the new music. It's not bad in and of itself it's just bad in the game, completely unwitting and out of place. The music system was also completely broken when they added this music as o have noticed songs don't really come on at random anymore. It's the same few songs in a loop over and over consistently. If that wasn't bad enough they couldn't even be bothered to implement the new music properly as it's significantly louder than the rest. Nothing like an out of place song that sounds like a sunrise playing while you're deep in a mine and at a volume so loud you can't even hear the blocks breaking let alone the potential mob coming for you. I've gotten to the point where I'm ready to mod to a slightly older version of the game which I find really sad.

Some people who worked with him back then, such as Jeb, are still around, too. Notch seemingly kept his views private until some years ago long after he already sold the company, so there’s a good possibility a lot of them weren’t aware either. It’s very likely the only reason they aren’t working with C418 anymore is due to the disagreement over the music rights, as stated in the video.

software dev here(who do spritework and music on free time when making games as a hobby): you might not own the rights to the features you made, but some of the things you make are also not owned by the company. and there is a massive difference between game features and music or sprites. game features need to be maintained constantly meaning that they do, in fact, keep paying you for that feature for as long as you work there, so making a feature only provides you more work opportunities later. on the other hand sprites and music are a "one off" service and are usually protected by royalty earnings for their use as after a piece has been made it can be replayed or displayed as many times as you want with no breaking issues(music doesn't stop musicing for no reason, same for images)

The way I see it, the issue is that C418 wants to continue working under the standards of an indie composer on a game that hasn’t been an indie game for a long time. He’s seeking the standards for the industry Minecraft was in when he first came to the team, and Microsoft is seeking the standard for the industry Minecraft is in now. The indie industry and the mainstream game industry are two completely different cans of worms with two completely different sets of standards for what is considered normal and acceptable. Perfectly normal for the composer working on an indie game to own the rights and make royalties, perfectly normal for composers working on powerhouse games owned by corporations to be compensated in a lump-sum instead. At the end of the day, yeah it sucks that we don’t have any new C418 tracks, but Microsoft is within their rights to seek what is considered the reasonable industry standard for a game of Minecraft’s scale. Toycat is right in pointing out that they wouldn’t have someone like Lena Raine working for them if they weren’t offering reasonable deals. Either one of the parties will have to bend to the other, or C418 will have to move on to other things. The problem is that he’ll probably run into the same issue with most other big-name games. He’s in a kill-or-be-killed industry, unfortunately you can’t usually have your cake and eat it too.

Comparing music to Minecraft features doesn't make much sense. Programmers are *not* paid on a feature-by-feature basis and musicians *are* paid on a piece-by-piece basis. Features aren't also protected by copyright laws, just ask PUBG and Fortnite or Fortnite and Minecraft. You also can't sell "a feature" unless there's an entire game built to support it, but you can sell music without any game to support it. This idea that Microsoft should own the music made for the game is indefensible and should never be considered the industry standard. This is exactly why we can't have the nice version of Doom Eternal soundtrack produced and released.

[Speculation] I think there's one extra detail missing. Wouldn't it be better for C418 to write *new* music under a *new* agreement, since doing a job and getting paid is better than not doing a job and not getting paid? I think Microsoft insisted on also transferring the rights to his *old* music to the company as well, otherwise they wouldn't work with him anymore. In that case, C418 choosing to walk away sounds very understandable.

  • @DieGo367

This is also most certainly the reason no music from Minecraft is present in Smash, as Microsoft don't hold the rights. There would have to be an agreement between all of Microsoft/Mojang and Nintendo and C418 for that to have happened. That's why they had to rely on Dungeons and Earth for their music. In Smash, the only tracks that are listed as directly from "Minecraft" proper are the tracks by Gareth Coker that come from the console mini games.

I can see it from both sides. C418- Had an agreement with Mojang during its time as an indie startup when Mojang was more than happy paying residuals as their influence to bring in more composers was limited, and until being purchased by Microsoft, Mojang just kept the contract the same even though their influence and means to pay other composers had grown. Therefore he is wondering why it needs to be changed now. Microsoft- While to many it looks like a case of "Greedy corporation screwing composer" is instead making decisions based on experience. Just like many large developers, they have experience with Licensing music (which they would be doing if C418 retained the rights) and then not being able to renew licensing or having a falling out with whomever they are contracting with and then having to alter the product when the license holder demands they stop using their content. Microsoft would rather just own the content outright where able.

Honestly both sides are reasonable arguments. It's a standard for artists to sell the rights to their work by being commissioned for said piece be it music, artwork, game assets, etc. I'm not normally one to defend big corporations but this is just standard business practice. It's honestly just something that has to be negotiated by the team to reach something of an agreement. There's not really a right or wrong side and it's just to conflicting normal opinions.
