Why Me vs You Isn't Close

Me vs You. You are not on my level
Btw guys it's actually kind of funny but I genuinely do not have beef with Chucks. He is a power scaler and yeah there's no way around that but I’m sure he’s a good guy and he’s making his money.
But yeah. I had to do this. Don’t ever disrespect the goat. Solarsourusrex. And he said you’re not allowed to question me so don’t.
But yeah thank you guys I love you. I think I’ll probably move on from youtube in about a year. Maybe less. I’m basically giving myself a year to make this channel self sustainable. But I’m not gonna push it relentlessly. If I’m not getting anywhere I’ll move on. It's okay. But by no means am I saying you guys should feel any pressure to watch the videos. Don’t worry about me.
I’ve been dealt incredibly lucky cards so the least I could do is make the most of it. But I’m not completely leaving either. Just inactive probably. And once its done I’ll come back. Because this is a great hobby. But I do miss when I could just make minecraft videos without any worry. Even if I wasn’t making money. But that's why. No fantasy land. See you at the top.
Thanks guys.

For everyone out there who is getting mad because a person on the internet said their favorite show has bad writing doesn't mean you can't still enjoy it. You can still enjoy "bad" art. Like I enjoy some of the anime that RSG 2 said had flawed writing but I don't get mad when someone says the writing is ass. Everyone has a different bs meter, some people can deal with a ton of bs and enjoy almost anything while others take in to account every instance of bs in art and only enjoy truly great art. Also if you are just that angry at someone to the point where you have to type out an essay in the comments then just turn off your phone, It's not that hard.

I think you're forcing yourself into thinking that you can only enjoy media with complex subtle writing, and sure those tend to be good but there's nothing wrong with enjoying a show with a character you like, I think the problem here is your criteria for calling media good or bad lays completely in the writing depth instead of all the other things that actually go into making it, and calling something "bad" regardless of what that thing was trying to achieve simply because you didnt think it had much narrative depth, or because its message is simple and clear. But if you care to clarify be my guest

there's an art to making simple, solid stories, to imply that the only good stories are those with subletly is just silly. it's ironically a perspective lacking in nuance, merely pointing out that very upfront stories are terrible without trying to explain why. on the other hand i do think most anime tell their simple stories poorly, like with the mentioned repetitive dialogue. i just don't think his reasoning is quite right.

I agree with your comment, but I think it's valid to go about things the way he's doing it also. I personally value the story itself more than the writing used to tell the story, but to each their own.

I do agree with you in most of this video but I will disagree with the anime segment. I don't think a piece of art being in-your-face with its ideas is necessarily a bad thing. Yes, subtly is very nice, but I don't think it's necessary for something to be good. What about nuance, or logic, or theming, or building up multiple plot-threads? I will agree with you that anime does have a very hard time with the rest of those things but some of the shows you've listed do have good parts in those other areas and I would implore you to give them another chance and watch them further. In particular, Vinland Saga and Cowboy Bebop. I don't blame you for not liking the unsubtle approach to anime though.

Exactly. If I think that having an online relationship with twitch girls, maintaining it by sending money can be considered a healthy relationship, then it IS one. There is no truth outside of my own perception, and rsg has to accept that. On a more serious note... There is a reason why I compared anime to twitch girls. Both are manipulative, and people wouldnt like either of them if they werent. Some are more, some are less, quantity is not an argument when it comes to manipulation, please dont make it. Feel free to enjoy anime, dont defend it though, unless you are so manipulated by it, that you cannot stand not defending it.

Kinda funny how you mention cowboy bebop could be seen as a cartoon network show. A lot of anime from that time blew up in popularity because of the toonami block on cartoon network actually, including cowboy bebop. And the host for the toonami block named Tom; voiced by Steve Blum, is the same actor that voices Spike Spiegal. Among many other voice credits. I think you should give that show more of a chance since it's not that long, and I do reccomend watching the dubbed version. However, I admit anime isn't for everyone and i myself am pretty picky about it. I would like to reccomend you the english dub of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. Even if it has dialogue you may not like I think you'd see the artistry in it and recognize how great it is from the action, the setting, the characters, and the story.

Yea anime definitely isn't for everyone and the character writing can be underdeveloped or have things be way too blunt but it has many shows that may not be masterful works of art are enjoyable by many and resonate with many viewers. I am also pretty picky with anime too lol. I would also recommend full metal alchemist brotherhood even though I haven't finished it yet. The main character has a quick temper which can be annoying at times I'd argue it still has good character writing. Also don't just watch the first episode as it doesn't completely set up the characters and focuses more on setting up the plot. Watch the first 2-3 episodes at least to get a good glimpse at what the show is.

@@fusionprime241 I would almost argue against character writing being underdeveloped. like yes in an industry as big as japanese media is, another example being Hollywood itself, it is too reductive to say it can be underdeveloped or sometimes be too blunt. something to keep in mind with this video by RSG and one of the most popular genres is mostly meant for young children. and that the japanese have a different way to tell their stories and write characters. If RSG reads this I think part of why he got so much hate comments when he said "anime isn't subtle at all." is that it feels almost a little racist to say that. it overgeneralizes the medium when you could easily point to very popular and critically acclaimed directors to counter that. such as hayao miyazaki and his films. it's almost baffling how people can claim anime is never subtle when you have films like Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Spirited away; or Tokyo godfathers to list a non miyazaki example. and that's just one director, there's plenty more out there one just needs to find it instead of looking at one aspect of the industry and brushing the rest off.

I feel like themes and story are also a part of writing and in terms of those some anime can and do keep up with and occasionally beat western media. And especially in AoT, even if the moment to moment script leaves some to be desired, the actual characters and the situations they find themselves in are still very interesting and unique. I think it's more a question of where that effort goes in writing. Even ignoring the fact that a lot of anime is afraid of breaking convention in a lot of ways, they still have their own strengths that western media lacks. I'm saying this as a person who dislikes anime precisely because of it's conventions and moment to moment writing. I hate that shit, but I don't think it's wise to write all of the writing off.

To be fair to Anime (more like Manga because that is where the writing takes place) the guy making it has to be an amazing artist who works to the bone while doing the writing week by week with no revisions to the first draft or rewriting, so it’s no wonder the writing can be lacking.

Good video, but I have this critique: Hell yeah anime dialogue is corny as shit. But if you watched it a lot of them and didn't like "because of the writing", you should consider that you aren't being fair to these shows as artpieces by just picking up the, idk, "shakesperean model of writing" used in our books and hollywood and applying it on the storytelling of a country miles away from europe. As in the phrase "Form follows function" (Louis Sullivan), stories and art in general have a voice of their own *before* you have the model to analyze them. Of course, that doesn't mean everything is good and that you should find a perspective to like everything, but you also can't make a fish climb a tree, fishes should be competing in the swimming contest or whatever. Anyway, all that said, you don't need to think about all that to dislike anime, no one who likes had to know about all this to like. The dialogue is corny and it's part of the charm, part of the style. Sorry for the wall of text.

The base meaning of the word "anime" is just "Japanese animation", but sometimes the word is used by some people with a different connotation that I think refers more specifically to certain kinds of shonen anime. For example, if a non-Japanese show has many characters with flashy colorful hair, I would say that it's "so anime", even though not all animes have characters with flashy colorful hair, just certain kinds of animes that most people think of when they hear the word. In this video, RSG 2 clarified that he thinks it's definitely possible that there may be a Japanese animation that can be considered as high art (that he hasn't seen yet), as he said at the following timestamp: 7:59.

RSG isn't a fan of how unsubtle most anime are, and I think I've got the primary reason why: most anime are written like this because of inner monologues. The biggest hurdle to getting non anime watchers to try anime is those. Even I hated monologues for a long time, as it has been ingrained in me as a sign of lazy writing, and most of the time it is. That is until I tried reading manga and realized why so many anime are like that. I think monologues exist because many manga and light novels rely on them as part of their narrative. And it's not like it's optional; you'd lose much of an integral part of the story if you stripped them away. Shows like Cowboy Bebop don't use monologues because they're anime originals and have no source material to fall back on. It's probably why the dialogue wasn’t as in-your-face as the other anime he’s watched. In fact, it's very common for anime originals to abide by the "show, don't tell" principles of storytelling. That's because they are bound by the mediums they're trying to adapt. I'd wager some adaptations do need inner monologues; otherwise, it'll just be a poor adaptation, like The Promised Neverland anime, for example. It removed all infodumps and monologues from the manga in favor of a very "show, don't tell" approach, just like Arcane and Avatar, and fans of the source material hated it. Removing all the internal monologue from the manga ended up removing all the mind games that the manga was famous for, making it just a generic horror thriller in their eyes. A lot of anime do internal monologues poorly, like Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titan, and Demon Slayer, for instance. But there are a lot of anime adaptations that need monologues in order to be somewhat successful. Well, that’s my two cents, at least. I'm pretty curious about his more intricate thoughts on anime at large if he ever makes a video on the subject. RSG, if you’re reading this comment, keep up the good work on the videos man.

I do think you would need to watch whole shows before you can actually judge them. especially before marring anime as a whole with poor writing. you opinion of if it is or isnt bad is irrelevant to what I am saying here and not what I am getting at, I just mean on a critical level, its better to understand what you are reviewing as a whole as opposed to only taking a look at a part of it. Kinda the only thing I can mention here as the rest you are on point with. an example could be trying to review the halo games as a whole but you only played the first level of the first game, You could certainly say the writing in the first game is poor but the writing in the 2nd game enriches the first. Not a perfect example I know but hey, Im just a guy in the comments section.

I understand what you're getting at. But I was not labeling the animes as a whole. Only their writing. Which the writing isn't something that "gets better" or relies on the bigger picture to work. I would never score or give conclusive thoughts on something I haven't completed.

@@ZAGON117 yo I made a mistake in my comment. I edited it but what I meant to say is that I would never give conclusive thoughts on something I haven't finished. On your question I think it would depend on the story. But most of the time it wouldn't matter. Writing isn't just thr constancy of characters. Think about it like execution. Writing is how a meaning is being conveyed. It is obviously very complicated and not something I could just explain in a few sentences. I think most of the time in anime, the meaning the show is trying to convey is done so reduntantly that the characters themselves end up feeling artificial. It's one thing to watch someone make out of character decisions and it's a whole other thing to watch a bunch of cardboard cut outs. I hope that makes sense

@@RSG200Id call code geass in as an example here, the thing is just themed around war and how the cycle will repeat again and again. characters will sound bland sometimes but some poor dialogue or some elements will be pushed to get the message across. What is key to focus on is the impact it leaves on those who watch it, if a story does get its message across in an emotional way, then does that give credit to writing, or perhaps you would refer to it as storytelling? Maybe it makes the impact far weaker. (Ill point at kung fu panda 3 here, Po tricking kai in a cheap way makes the whole thing have less value and feel rushed.) I know they go hand in hand but the distinction is important. In code geass case, I feel like the mecha fights are all window dressing to what the writer was trying to convey to people. Often it is quite heavy handed in that respect. I would be interested in having your opinion on the show as a whole if you ever did watch it. I am not really critiquing your video directly anymore (as you did agree clarify my issue with your video) I am just striking up a bit of a chat. I feel you and I think similarly.

not gonna lie, if we're talking about good writing, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is peak example; i can't think of a show better than this and no, just because a show has 50 times more episodes doesn't mean that the writing is good if it's filled with a crap ton of filler- so don't go saying that One Piece or Dragon Ball has better writing than Frieren, because it doesn't-

I get his point on anime as a lot of anime has no trust that their viewers have reading comprehension (probably true). But dismissing a whole show based on the first episode is kinda unfair. The first episode of a show usually has a lot to do. They need to explain the world, introduce characters and keep ape minded people watching. So they are usually structured differently from the rest of the show. Id say give a show at least 3 episode before making a judgement. Also berserk does not have any good adaptation. If you want a story read the manga

Your videos are always entertaining even when i disagree with some of the opinions and logic. Arguing objectivity for inherently subjective aspects like "good writing" using the basis of personal preferences isn't a good foundation for proving anything other than bias. Trying to judge entire shows of the first 20 minutes/first episode is not exactly a concrete thought process. Before you can critically judge a piece of media's writing one should at least do the due diligence to understand the goal/purpose of said media and how it was formated in said industry. Otherwise you're just trying to fit everything into the same box without understanding the myriad of different writing styles and their purposes. TL;DR: I can't lose to ignorance.

yes and no. The first episode of a series sets up the entire show and the way the show is written so it is a good indicator of the writing quality for the show or at the very least the first season. But the first episode is mainly set up for the story and is unable to cover any character arcs so it can't encompass the entirety of what the author is trying to do with their characters. Many series maintain the same writing quality throughout the entire show while others decline or improve so it depends on the show but in the case of what RSG 2 was trying to emphasize, it was effective, at least in my opinion.

Your point on Anime is pretty stupid. 1) Anime are as different as any form of media. You admitted that you generalized too much, but at face value even in this video you watch some episodes and declare that most anime have bad writing. Spoiler: every media with thousands of hours per years have a lot of dumb shit. 2) anime for me is the same as animation. The only difference is in what place is produced, and there are many japanese, and some are good at writing and some are bad. 3) Maybe the adaptation is different, but i read Monster, and yes, sometimes is pretty dumb, but overall is truly good. All the arc of mains characters are good. The detective, johan, politics etcetc. Sometimes is naive, but that's the nature of any media that have a very big "scope" and you have limited time to create a piece of media. It's near impossible to see a WB like Lotr because Tolkien literally spend his life to create that, but it's unreasonable to pretend that accuracy in any fantasy, and imo nuance in politics is even more complicated. Also BB have some shitty premise, and some dialogue and situations are flat out stupid. The police and Walter brother in low are so fucking stupid. But overall it's good. Side point: Anime many times are very theatrical, and yes, that can be very cringe sometimes, especially in show like AoT, but it's not *really* bad writing, it's lack of nuance of what you want to do with a story. Sometimes AoT is grounded, some times Shakespearian, and that's bad imo, but in case of Mob, well, it is coherent and tell you what it is about and how in their first episode. I enjoy theatre, I am one of the few that actually go to a theatre and watch Swan Lake and enjoy all of it, but if someone tell me that it's shit because there's no dialogue and the ballet was tiresome, than that person is simply in the wrong place. Ofc its an hyperbolic example, but i hope that you get the idea And now, some good anime with imo very top notch writing: -Revolutionary girl Utena. Here i kinda cheat, it's a very flowed masterpiece, sometimes to slow and sometimes to fast, but some characters arc are just so fucking good, with nuance in something like teen sexuality and gender role back in the late 90'. Also the director, Kuniku Hikurara, is a fan of Lynch, and holy if we see that. -Miyazaki, Takahata and Satoshi Kon whole filmography. No explanation here lol. -All the Anime that Yuaasa directed. Anime like Kaiba and Ping Pong can be exaggerated in some situations, but it's only served for style and animation. Sorry for my English
