Why many Canadians believe they don't get carbon tax rebates

Believe it or not, millions of Canadians just got their quarterly carbon tax rebates. And yet, many Canadians who are eligible for the rebates don't believe they receive them, according to recent polling by the Angus Reid Institute. CBC's Robson Fletcher explains.

I am in BC and have paid this tax for15+ years and no rebates. My last gas bill had $36 carbon tax plus GST which equated to 23% of the whole bill. BC is now in trouble as last year they had to import 20% of their power requirements. Depending who you talk to BC is in serious trouble with their grid and even the limited plans now will not be enough or in time. BCUC just said no to a gas pipeline in the Okanagan which because of this will limit housing as there is simply not enough power available to handle growth in that area. This on top of the province with the highest cost of living and housing affordability and their so called drop in GHG is emissions has become so laughable except that it is so painful financially.

Ironically, BC has had to import power this past year because of the drought that affected the province in 2023 and that drought is because of climate change. Isn't it interesting that climate change deniers are suffering under the effects of climate change even as they complain about all efforts to mitigate climate change? After all, the world's personal transportation is the source of about 20% of global emissions. I wonder what it will take to wake those deniers up to the importance of ALL of us doing our part? I guess it's just easier to complain about finally having to pay for our pollution, than to do anything about it.

The point of the tax is to hurt Canadians, otherwise it won't change behaviour. So either some people aren't getting the rebates, or the tax is being offset, and they do get them, but it doesn't feel like it. Which would be ideal, other than for the political blowback that will hurt the Liberals in the polls. The Liberals can't have it both ways, if it isn't hurting, then it won't be working. In reality, some people are getting them who don't use much gas. I am low income, and also low travel, It is also the case that some rich people are getting them, if they are high net worth, and low income. So the system is probably to some extent a mess.

‼Regarding the Canada Carbon Rebate program. If you live outside a Census Metropolitan Area CMA, you are entitled to a 20% supplement to the rebate. Unless, like myself, you do not have Canada Post Service, so are forced to get mail service a Post Office with a Postal Code that happens to fall within a CMA, then CRA sees you as ineligible for the 20% supplement! As the entire program is based on Postal Code! This effects not only myself, however likely THOUSANDS of Canadian taxpayers. I have written to my Conservative Member of Parliament, John Barlow, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, the Liberal Minister of Revenue and the Commissioner of the CRA regarding this issue/oversight, but have yet to receive a response from any of them. I have received the 10% supplement in the past two years, however have been determined to be ineligible for 2024! If you live in a rural area close to a CMA and do not have Postal Service, check your Canada Carbon Rebate notice, you also may not be getting what is owed/promised to you by Justin Trudeau and the NDP Liberal collation

See It makes sense, but the rebate doesn’t cover consumer inflation due to carbon tax. Furnature, groceries etc, all have skyrocketed, and the grocery rebate quite is not close to being adjusted for it in 2024. Direct carbon use and purchase like gas sure it’s SOME of it back, but inflated assets from burdened industries it’s not even close.

Trucks are getting bigger RVs are getting longer so it's definitely not working as a behavioral change? So if the tax isn't going to the help the environment! Isn't working as a behavior change? So Carbon taxes are actually worse for the environment!

Did you even know that large oil/gas production volumes and resulting financial profits mean large crown royalties that drive provincial budgets? Your position would be aggressively mocked by Alberta, Sask and east coat provinces where oil/gas production is wanted. Alberta has only a 5% PST in part due to it resource revenues.

The carbon tax is given to eligible Canadians. From what I understand if Canadians are well off then they will not receive a cent. Farmers receive a couple of dollars from what I saw why well I don't know. I think it's Canadians who are living on the edge of poverty that receive a reasonable amount of money from the carbon tax rebate, and I think it's in the hundreds ever, so often. Taxes would have to be done to get the carbon tax rebates, and I don't know if it's all over Canada, or only certain parts of Canada that receive the carbon tax rebates.

This video makes the point very well. Even if 100% of the amount collected is handed out as rebates, the system introduces an administrative cost that is born by tax paying Canadians. True revenue neutrality is impossible in this context. The carbon tax initiative is a wasteful policy with goals better achieved by other means.

  • @perllyngrenn2100

@perllyngrenn2100 Did I, at any point, imply actual functional policies would be cheaper? The carbon tax is wasteful because it incurs cost without actually working. You want to legitimately reduce carbon intensity and overall emissions, try working towards converting shipping fleets to nuclear power. Try moving forward with geothermal power solutions. Try including geothermal HVAC in the rebate schemes for Canadians living in places air to air type systems are insufficient.

It only fails because people are so damn stubborn and apparently don't care that their kids and grandkids are going to live in a crisis world! And those two changes you mentioned.... they are doing those things (funding research and development in geothermal companies and carbon capture, like they just gave $91 million to that geothermal company in Calgary for example) and the funding is coming out of the carbon taxes with the majority of the cost being born by industries that have to pay carbon taxes on their massive emissions. And most people aren't living in a situation where they can install a geothermal system anyway so they decided to put money where the average homeowner can make changes. Better windows, better doors, more insulation, , better home sealing, mechanical and renewable energy systems. Did you take advantage of any of that? We did. Our EV, our solar panels, our new triple glazed windows, our attic insulation...... What did you do? Anything?
