Canada Post considers eliminating daily mail deliveries

As Canada Post grapples with substantial losses, it is contemplating a significant revamp in the way Canadians receive their mail. As Tina Yazdani reports, one option on the table: bidding farewell to daily deliveries.

They are corrupt like Politicians, as Canada is a public sector economy, not a private sector. Canadian Politicians and CEO's pass down their wealth & status to their families and people of interest i.e., nepotism & favoritism. The 85% remaining Canadians get shafted.

What this report fails to mention is that the corporation has spent multi millions upgrading their fleet and is planning an expansion at one of their biggest sortation facilities. If the volumes are down and they are reducing delivery, why the investment and expansion if there is no revenue? Corporate executives and managment continue to recieve bonuses while carriers are fighting for a decent living wage. Typical crown corporation propaganda.

A standard negotiating tactic is to threaten jobs of workers. That is probably what this is. Mail is an essential service used by seniors (who will constitute 25% of our population soon) and rural areas that often have no chioce. Let's remember that Canada Post was once solely owned and delivered by the Government of Canada before it was a crown corporation. Perhaps the time has come for our government return to that function if Canada Post the crown corporation is unable to do the job.

This video resurfaces the philosophical argument for the federal government's retention of crown corporations (state-owned enterprises)- which typically exhibit the following characteristics: (1) Reduced consumer choice and domestic competition from private sector alternatives, while being shielded from market forces like bankruptcy and continue in operation despite poor economic results, with taxpayers and customers bear the costs of poor service (2) A lack of transparency in (and accountability for) operational performance, political nepotism and decision making, political interference in decision making and resource allocation, and (3) Collective bargaining arrangements with trade unions which often usurp management prerogatives to be nimble and flexible in adapting to changing market conditions, and in so doing breeding operational inefficiencies and a lack of innovation.

And I'm wondering why the Trudeau government won't divest its shareholding in this costly and ineffective albatross of a state enterprise.

I worked summers in the post office when I was in college. I find it shocking that an organisation that was designed to carry and deliver over 95% of all postage and parcels in Canada has evolved so little in the face of competition. Letter traffic has dwindled to a pathetic trickle since email and texting. Parcel deliver has been championed by the courier companies. The Post Office actually thought that delivery flyers and other useless nonsense would bolster their bottom line. The Post Office needs to compete with couriers if it is to survive. With all of it real estate and assets being paid for by the public I really do not understand why that is as great a challenge as it is when facing for profit private companies.

Canada Post needs to charge corporations a fair rate. Companies get bulk discounts which provide them almost free shipping while the end customer gets hosed, both in personal mail rates and with the fact that the companies that get the discounts don't charge the customer the lower rate but rather the full rate as extra profit

We don't have mail on Sundays already and it's not an issue... why not reduce it to 3 times a week... I mean if the letter is urgent, the sender would use an Express postage anyways so... we should be doing away with letters anyways... less paper, less chances of it getting lost... Why hold on to things just for old people, it's keeping us from progressing as a society.

Perhaps if they delivered their packages to condos and apartments rather than leave a notice to go pick it up and not even attempt to deliver they would not be seeing losses. The government can mandate they actually deliver.

PM Harper had CP in a surplus position before Lustin' decided to make the easy decision and cave to those who live in the 1950s. This deficit is completely on his shoulders and is one of the endless things that Pierre will need to waste time addressing once he takes office. But I do thank CTV for allowing comments as our Taxpayer-funded Conservative Bashing Corporation doesn't want to know what Canadians think. Ever ...

We need mail twice a week max and there should be no more home delivery. If the financial reality of the situation is that they either cut back or discontinue operations altogether, then they should make the cuts. I'm sorry some old people will lose a friend in their mail carrier, but change is an inevitable part of life.

why is the service so bad? why do I have to go 3 k to my mail box why is Canada post so expensive. I hate using Amazon but most delivery's are free. Years of over paid staff, undeserved executive bonuses over generous pensions and poor working practises. UK mail has improved since it was sold off. 1 from South of UK to Scotland 3 days for similar in Canada.
