NGL, I totally thought you were going to say _Coraline_ . With that said, why is “female protagonist” something special these movies have in common? Women make up roughly half the population, so there’s nothing particularly special about them - it’s like lumping _SpongeBob_ and _Harry Potter_ together just because they both have a male protagonist.

I feel like this is a really wasted opportunity to talk about how the adoption system *actually* screws people over. Kids who never get adopted don't just get a free apartment and a shiny new job handed to them, they gotta figure a lot of shit out on their own and it's scary and hard. If you're going to have an orphan character with the entire premise being that she's incredibly unlucky... maybe show the actual bad parts about being orphaned?????? idk. strikes me as kind of an odd choice.

You can't expect much as they can't even show alcohol n stuff anymore in movies it's been watered down this generation of movies is hella weak so I can't expect much and neither should you

There's a fable about determining the nature of "luck", which begins when a farmer's horse runs away. The village sympathizes, saying it's "bad luck." The farmer replies "Maybe." Eventually, the horse comes back, and brings two horses with it. "What good luck!" the village cries. "Maybe," the farmer replies. When trying to break the new horses, the son falls off and breaks his leg. Bad luck? Maybe. While the son is healing, the army comes through looking for recruits, but the son is passed over due to his condition. Good luck? Maybe. Good and bad luck may feel as such in the moment, but only time will tell how these passing instances actually affect our lives. I just feel that if you're going to make a film literally about luck, there's so many avenues to explore about how luck manifests, and for creators so renowned for elaborate storytelling and world building, there were a lot of missed opportunities.

Monsters Inc. had a message beyond "monsters collecting screams", and that's why it worked. "Laughter is more powerful than fear" is a great message for children to learn. Still can't figure out what Luck's message is.

honestly the machine wouldve worked great if bad luck is more a byproduct of good luck. it would make sense to distribute the bad luck as well because why would you hold unto that in on concentrated pile.

the adoption system and what happens to kids at 18 is such an important subject, and i was hoping when you mentioned her story that they'd dive into that more but.. yeah. disappointing

Nah dude, gotta talk about Sam's butt.

My biggest issue with this movie honestly was how ungrateful she seemed for the things she DID have. Like all the good things that she did have didn't matter because she only focused on the negative, and while that could've been the point they didn't expand on that at all. Granted I watched it with my little sister while half asleep so I may have missed a few things, but even my little sister who is 14 years younger than me said "at least she's not homeless, at least she has friends". When an 8 year old calls your movie out on the bs, there's a problem.

This reminds me of that scene in Zootopia where Judy first gets to the city and is tricked by someone she was trying to help, is bullied at work, eats gross microwave carrots, and gets stuck in wet cement. THAT was a well done, kid friendly presentation of real bad luck and when Judy just keeps going to work despite everything, it makes her so much more relatable and interesting to follow. I haven't seen Luck yet, but it sounds like something like this could have done alot for the story and character growth.

Yes !! Zootopia is underrated as a movie because people just went "lmao furries" and ignored it. It's a super good movie and it has a MUCH better message of endurance without trying to, especially when it deals with like the concept of racism and stuff (i say concept because they're animals not people). This movie feels kind of hollow cuz it just doesn't talk about like real struggles like poverty and stuff and how actually shitty the foster system and growing up is, it's just like "whoops dropped my sandwich ://" it sounds like someone who's been upper middle class their entire life wrote this lmao. My family's low class and I think they could've been so deep with the implications of good and bad luck and enduring and it wasn't ://

I'd RATHER watch The Cat Returns.

We watched this movie with my kids, and we enjoyed it thoroughly. There was nothing me or my kids did not quite understand and they would love some toys based on luck, and I made the whole thing up. I have no kids neither apple tv.

I never even heard about this movie until yesterday and I watched it. The main female protagonist Sam was a bit corny like she was this bootleg version of Anna from Frozen. The Luck world was generic but interesting. Probably the best part of the film was Bob. So it seemed like an okay movie to me but it could have done it better.

The facial expressions were so dulled compared to the excellent voice acting. The voice would be filled with emotion and the face of the character would be giving NOTHING. I’m so glad you reviewed this movie. I felt the exact same way about it.

It wasn't just the facial expression, it was *all* of the character animation. The movements were so subtle and bland, and a ton of shots just had the characters standing there and doing nothing with their bodies. Animation like that is supposed to be exaggerated.

Honestly, I wish the film didn't have the whole "mc transports into a fantasy realm revolving around this one specific theme" plotline and had the whole film take place in the real world. The most engaging parts of the movie to me was the cat-chasing scene and watching her deal with her unluckiness in her day-to-day life. You can still keep the talking cat and the lucky coin plotline, you can still have her realize that life is less about luck and more about how you react to the events that happen to you. It would have also made it easier to develop the relationship between the mc and the little girl, something I felt was a bit undercooked in the actual movie.

Yeah have the first act focus on how bad her luck is, maybe even show how she is so use to minor bad luck she plans around it (sidesteps a falling plant or something) but that it doesn't stop her from suffering big things (application to college did send due to glitch or not having enough money after her luck breaks something expensive). Have her find the cat and coin, gain good luck but have to make a deal with the cat on who gets the luck each day.... Yada yada yada, they lost the coin during a hand off and slap stick adventure of two unlucky characters tracking down and losing the coin over and over (probably lose it in an old ladies lose change because of course). Find the penny and have good luck again only to find out they didn't actually have the real lucky penny when it shows up again at their doorstep. They realize they need a better outlook on life not a lucky penny and that they have overcome through hard work. Hand penny to girl, girl finds parents. END

I felt the same way. When I saw the trailer I was interested in seeing how her day to day was playing out and when they introduced the luck world I was disappointed and felt right away it would be a lackluster viewing experience. The fantasy world takes a lot of focus off the characters, at least in this film :(

I do like how they animated the black cat and his vocal direction. It’s really hard to animate cats and I love how they did it.

I get the feeling there probably was an earlier draft that had Sam go through hell in order to endure as you said. However, since Lasseter is in charge at Sundance now he probably said "no please change it " since he said something similar during the early production of Zootopia

Zootopia is a good movie but the earlier drafts used to be REALLY dark it had a strong concept but I think toning it down may have been a wise choice However with Luck, it was a very poor choice. Especially since it is ABOUT luck, that is the capacity for good and bad things to happen, they should have leaned into it and taken full advantage Wasted concept, really a shame

It would have made a lot of sense that Sam actually has "real" bad luck in her life. She was never adopted and so they kick her out of the orphanage and she needed to survive on her own living on the streets. To her see having many breakdowns crying and screaming that she just completely hated her existence until one day she meets Bob. That right there is could have good character development. I mean she just can't get like a shiny new apartments and a job *snap* just like that! And it's all sunshine and rainbows for her! The real world isn't a nice place and that's what the film failed to taught.

With full respect to the artists who worked hard on this film, unfortunately the overly-safe aesthetics just couldn't bring me to care, personally. We're so far into the age of CGI animated movies that shooting for the "classic" Disney/Pixar-esque look tends to feel generic now. Which is kind of ironic, considering at least 3 out of the 4 recent Pixar films (haven't seen Lightyear yet) tries to break from that with their attempts to push character designs and visual aesthetics. ...And then you have The Bad Guys, which is still probably one of the most impressive executions of aesthetics for a mainstream film release in recent years. High fidelity 3D is nice in some regards, but animation is so much more fun and memorable when it pulls elements from its 2D roots.

I also love how The Bad Guys managed to make a Snake have human characteristics without giving him arms and legs. Like scenes where he's using his tail as a hand and even managed to play the guitar in one scene, which I still find entertaining.

I loved watching the scene of that lucky world thing just because of how easy it is to mock on how boring the world is, despite this clearly trying to be framed as the stereotypical sweeping, grand introduction of this fantastic new world. The juxtaposition was fucking hilarious to me.

“Privileged bad luck” sums it up perfectly

Kinda wild they didn't take the more obvious route of "someone's good luck usually results in someone else's bad luck."

In terms of her having privileged bad luck, let’s also not forget to point out that she must have a lot of baggage to deal with that could affect her perspective on the world and therefore can make things a lot harder for her. She seems to be psychologically normal, not any signs of complex PTSD or anything else you can get from not having consistent and trustworthy caregivers your whole life. Like I know what kind of trauma I’ve run into with a conventionally relatively decent family life that I’ve been trying to recover over the past 10 years or so I can only imagine what kind of crap someone like her would have to go through. But nope, she is pretty much mentally healthy and clean

She is a innocent optimistic person. Which is one of the rarest type of person. You can be a optimistic you can be innocent but both is really hard to fine in people. Most become bitter through experience. Most people harden their hearts so they won't get hurt again. Some become greedy in their selfish because of how the world has taken from them.

I think Luck would have worked better as a children's novel, since runtime is not an issue with a book and you can cram in more exposistion without dragging down the story.

Dang it, when I saw the black cat, I thought it was clever that they used it as a lucky cat. Because black cats never get adopted because of the negative association, so I thought this could be a turnaround for a commonly colored type of cat that's been done dirty by society for so long. But nope

When Saber started talking about the cat and the penny, I thought "oh cool, a matagot maybe? that's going to be interesting" but no... they couldn't even bother with digging into parts of the history and lore surrounding black cats and maybe give it a nice, happy, kid-friendly twist with a "hey, actually, this cat isn't unlucky nor evil but it's the way the people treat them and talk about them that makes them seem that way". It could have been great if we had some kind of adoption for the black cat at the end, seeing how it seems to be the source of the plot (with the child at the beginning).

@@hybrid09 That'd be so sweet; the kid and the cat get a happy home together. Kinda makes me think the MC isn't even necessary or maybe they should've aged her down and gotten rid of the kid. Though MC just muddling her way through her new adult life with her newly adopted cat while finding her found family sounds ten times more interesting and less messy. I like the idea of the talking cat and then the Luck Dragon just being a new pal who helps her realize that she's just as lucky to have a different network of support and she's much luckier than she realized which isn't to say she can't have bad days but maybe MC also helps out at the local soup kitchen and the cat shelter to give back. IDK. Sounds like the problem is they handled luck the same way a lot of media tries to handle clumsiness...

We had a very gentle, intelligent black cat named Lucky for nearly 19 years. Silly superstitions do nothing but harm, and the distraction of them masks actual problems.

Everyone who's faced anything hard in their life (serious illness, losing someone, losing their house to natural disaster) is rolling their eyes so hard at Sam's "bad luck"

It's bizarre that they, out of the blue, changed Sam's outlook on life from "Bad luck sucks and life would be better without it" to "Actually bad luck is necessary because yes". Babe is right in that it brings nothing but misery right up until the end, where she's suddenly wrong and the antagonist for trying to make the randomizer pour out nothing but good luck. They could've very easily avoided this issue by showing that bad luck makes people adaptable and resilient, and a complete lack of bad luck makes you unable to cope with even the smallest of inconveniences. They tried to introduce this concept at the very end with the bad luck creatures at the bar, but they don't showcase it properly, nor does Sam have that epiphany moment that would fit this concept.

Reminds me of a short film, "Jinxy Jenkins and Lucky Lou". Its about two people, a man with horrendous luck and a woman with extremely good luck, and the're both miserable! The man is miserable because nothing ever goes his way, and the woman is miserable because *everything* goes her way and she's bored out of her mind! They meet, hijinks ensue, and for the first time both start having fun as things start going well for the man and for the first time the woman has a little excitement in her life. Its on KZread, highly recommend giving it a watch!

There was a Lindsey Lohan movie called "Just My Luck" that dealt with this same concept in a really interesting way. I haven't seen it in years but I remember it was sort of two people who had extreme luck/unluckiness and they kept swapping and trying to get the good luck back. It was really cute and a part of it was accepting bad luck when it comes and facing the good and the bad as a couple which was really sweet

I'm glad you brought up Eugene from "Hey Arnold" as an example of a 'bad luck' character. Considering all of the crazy stuff he dealt with in that show and hearing how mildly inconvenient this movie's lead's bad luck is (haven't seen the movie yet btw), I don't see why they didn't go all out with the latter. Although, I wouldn't mind somebody editing clips of this movie to have Eugene's scream in it.

@@Brigeb20 What about the scene from "Eugene's Bike" where after his bike gets destroyed, he starts to scream bigly and looks like a Peanuts character as the camera pans out.

The Danganronpa video games did a great job of tackling lucky characters as a concept, the character Makoto Naegi embodying the exact example of persevering through bad luck that you mentioned, and the character Nagito Komaeda portraying the extremes of bad and good luck in a really interesting way. Within the universe of the game, there is implied to be such a thing as levels of innate luck by birth, as well as a luck cycle, which impacts how lucky characters are overall - with levels of luck sometimes being really unbalanced. These precedents lend themselves to some very compelling character development in my opinion, and thus I think the games make much more effective use of luck as a concept than this film did

@@juno9876 This movie didn't do a good job of utilising the main character's extreme bad luck in an interesting way. I thought that the Danganronpa games did make interesting use of extreme luck as a character trait, so I thought I'd bring up the ways in which Danganronpa made effective use of luck as a narrative tool where this film failed to. Danganronpa overall hasn't much in common with this film, but the concept of luck and a character who is deeply impacted by it it is relevant to Danganronpa, since characters like that are consistently significant throughout three of the main four games. Why shouldn't I make these comparisons, when the entire concept of the main character is very similar to that of Makoto and Nagito?

I like the concept of bad luck as I love the show Milo Murphy's Law. That's enduring bad luck. Things literally fall apart around him and get set on fire but Milo's backpack has everything to figure it out, and he is one of the most positive characters in the show in terms of attitude.

The fact that she isn't homeless makes the whole point of being alledgedly "unlucky" non existant.

Thank you. I'm glad someone acknowledged this. Luck is my movie of the year because that part of Sam's life, almost perfectly reflects my own. And personally I think Saber is a dick for thinking Sam didn't have it that hard.

@@murderman8578 You have to go to University or College in order to continue receiving support after ur 18th birthday. Sometimes they also ask you to work and contribute to rent but not in every situation. Personally they paid half of my rent, and expected me to work at least 30 hours a week and attend part time schooling that also took up to 30 hours per week.

They also like to limit you on with who and where you can live if they're offering any support. I wasn't allowed to get a regular apartment and was rushed into a room and board situation that put my safety in danger because they didn't look into it enough and almost took my funding when I moved out and into an apartment with my boyfriend, even though I was following their rules regarding school and a job.

@@shaniachevarie2780 more like it's the writers fault for not actually depicting her life as that hard. Besides being in the system her whole life and aging out, there really isn't anything that happens to her or that she feels that really shows the audience that it's been hard. It's just meh. They have the concept, but they did almost nothing with it.

What suprised me was that Sam never questioned her own bad luck and lack of good luck. In the movie universe Sam is the most unlucky person, she then finds out that there is a place that produces good and bad luck, yet she never questions why she never have good luck? As for the good luck and bad luck I though there would be some ''good luck would loose its meaning without bad luck'', like if everyday you found 1000 dollars it would at one point not be good luck anymore it would just be the norm.

I find this issue with a lot of kids films where they're too scared to deliver on the emotions they're setting up. For example, if they want someone to get to a super low point in their life, they don't actually set it up very well, they just kind of imply that this vaguely bad thing hurt the character in some vague way. I like films such as "UP" that are willing to absolutely bash in a character's emotional state before building a backup through the plot. I think that it is important for kids to watch their heroes get beaten to a pulp because it makes their comeback feel all the much better. Would Luke becoming a Jedi feel as awesome if he didn't lose so hard in The Empire strikes back, even losing his hand? I don't think so. I feel like studios need to stop being scared of what they're showing the kids, and let kids feel emotional damage, because it makes the story feel a lot more meaningful. Another prime example is the first Sonic the hedgehog movie. We don't actually see Sonic's caretaker die on screen, probably because that would have been a bit too bloody to show kids, but he literally loses his home and only caretaker within the first 5 minutes of the film. That film literally takes his emotions, rips them apart, shakes them, throws them into a blender, and then bashes their metaphorical kneecaps, so it feels all the much better when he Powers up and defeats eggman at the end because you can tell that he's actually fighting for something instead of just fighting because the plot demands it. Every time he looks sad, you feel sad with him. That explosion of rage at the baseball field? That resonated with audiences' souls, because they know that he went through unimaginably hard pain at such a young age. If you want to make audiences feel for a character, show them the character hurting, and then show them the character persevering. Don't just make a bunch of cheap shots of bad luck, and then claim that this is some kind of big character changing moment. The only times I've ever seen an audience cry, get goosebumps, cheer, etc is when they see a character that they care about being put through trials and tests and persevering through them, because that is the centerpiece of the hero's journey. Sorry if this was such a long rant, but I am a very passionate writer and I hate when half baked stuff gets force fed to children instead of studios pumping their time and money into truly awesome stories that can shape a generation's childhood.

While hearing the "Why not just give the whole world good luck?" thing, something came to mind that I think would've been way more interesting, and actually help a lot with world-building. So, if you give good luck to everyone, that means even bad people will get good luck. Bad people will be able to accomplish bad things by getting lucky during bad moments. So you have to give bad luck to them, right? Well what if they can't do that? And that's where the randomization comes in. They can't choose who gets what. They can only choose whether it's good or bad luck. It'd be better if it isn't just relegated specifically to "persevering through to bad luck" but rather "how you react to luck" as a whole. Because someone isn't quantified by how lucky or unlucky they are. It's how they react to the good and bad luck in life that makes them who they are. Bad luck is not needed to appreciate good luck. Luck as a whole is unfair. There is no reason that you were chosen, it just happened. There are infinite things you can explore with the topic of luck. Heck, I think just destroying the entire luck dimension as a whole would be a better ending. There are these magical beings that are dealing bad luck to the people of the world. Even if they're dealing good luck as well, it's not worth the pain and suffering they are inflicting upon people. Give the protagonist a chance to get rid of her bad luck and only have good luck, but then over the course of the film, let her realize the bad luck that others are going through as well. And when she finally gets the chance to get rid of her bad luck, have her decide to say no. Have her step up and tear down the luck machine. Luck will always exist as a part of life, but she can at least stop these magic creatures from inflicting more luck on the world. I just keep rambling on and on, and I would develop my thoughts further, but I'll stop here. Man it sounds like there was a lot of missed potential to craft an actually interesting story here, but it just... came out really generic.

Actually, that would’ve made a much better midpoint of the movie. All bad luck is removed when the option is presented, so when the main character goes back they immediately realize the value of bad luck existing. Then the dragon who suggested the idea goes rogue with the “but it’s for the greater good” mentality and the mc has to go back and stop them to bring order to the world or something along those lines. Maybe have the “good luck” for the little girl be not ideal (like a bad family comes along and takes her in) and so the mc has to bring bad luck back to help her somehow. Maybe the main character (if you haven’t noticed I forgot her name) weaponizes/uses bad luck to her advantage in the climax of the movie to really hone in the “but she perseveres” idea.

I agree with your concept because it makes sense for the world building. We know about how luck is distributed and where it comes from but, what makes it different for how the audience views the subject of the movie, obviously one would have to be an older child in order to keep interest in the concept of luck. (Most kids are just told when something is lucky/unlucky and don't necessarily "see" it for themselves.)

It's a contradiction, because not every crime is victimless. And if you're the victim of a crime, then that's pretty unlucky. But getting away with crimes is pretty lucky. Perhaps the dragon was wrong in her assumption that we didn't need bad luck, otherwise the universe would have actually imploded. Paradoxes like that are unsolvable. Or, maybe, luck is subjective.

Sam’s design very much reminds me of what happens when a creator is overly paranoid about making a mary-sue so they try to make the character as plain and generally relatable as possible. But then all you get is a boring, forgettable character.

However, Mary Sues are just as bad as bland characters. Bland characters are boring because they're repetitive due to how often you see characters act like them. Mary Sues are boring because they win all the time with no effort, which is boring. Having a mix of characters like these can sometimes be better than doing an in between as it allows for contrasting.

I feel so disappointed. This movie could've been so memorable if it actually went full on into the theme of "bad luck happens to us in life, but we can't let it stop us, we have to keep going". This is something that is great to tell to kids, to teach them to be strong as they're growing up. Fight through all the bad times you're going through. But... They executed it so BADLY. The way they executed it is so underwhelming that it legit makes me so mad that it could've been way better. I think the main issue I have with this: They focused way too much on the fantasy luck world. I mean, sure, obviously you can still world build for this place. And I think it's personally cute! But with the serious message this tries to deliver, they really should've focused a lot more on the real world aspects of what's "REEEEALLY" bad luck. And to obviously balance it out would be the cutesy luck world she goes to with the cat. It's just... They didn't get this balance right. It seriously sucks that it all feels unbalanced like that. That being said: I love how cute the kitty is.

Or you could make this premise around a character that's essentially Ferris Bueller, somehow getting out of situations by the skin of their teeth, and the luck people go after them because they're causing some kind of imbalance. I find that way more interesting.

Can I also just say that I hate that we're in this era of animation where movies look absolutely beautiful and have zero substance? I'm looking at you, Lightyear. This seems to have the same problem. Makes me miss Newgrounds. Sure, the animation quality was questionable, but there was so much heart and creativity behind those projects.

I don't think they look "good" in artistic sense, just technologically well built. The character design behind the characters in Luck is nothing substantial, I could see those characters in any generic animated movie and wouldn't even recognise them. The colours are okay, the lightning is okay.. everything is just "okay" if you know what I mean?

I literally have gotten indie animation jobs in the 2020s thanks to Newgrounds, how dare you imply it’s no longer relevant! Also, check out the more recent animations that tend to get Front-Paged-the standards for the site have definitely improved quite a bit, and arguably help the KZread animation scene too since many animators (myself included) upload on both sites.

So there's some times when I get worried that a movie I'm going to see has not so good ratings with saberspark. But I do take a chance and watch them to judge for myself. And honestly I thought this movie was very sweet and very wholesome for such tough subjects. I didn't mind that it was "safe". I like the plot, the voice actors were great, and overall story was really good. I really like that black cats are good luck in other cultures such as chinese, irish, and other Asian countries. I like that they played a lot with the good and bad lucks of different cultures. To me that was super fascinating. And honestly, you don't get a lot of stories with kids aging out of the foster care system. To me it was a really surprising element. I hope they do more playing around with subjects like these and in light-hearted fashion.

To be fair the main character did experience BAD luck when she became an orphan

When I first saw the ad, I was struck by how similar to the modern Disney female faces looked, and was extremely confused by the fact that it WASN'T Disney.

I was also confused I was like cool Disney and Pixar are making a new movie about luck interesting. And then I found out it wasn't from Disney

Honestly the original idea for this movie was WAY more interesting. Origninally it was pitched as Bad luck and Good luckl being at "war" with each other and Sam being the one to stop the war and broker a peace treaty. Then Jon Laister (or however u spell his name) came in and changed it completely.

@@Chloe_thefoxstudios Well, to be fair, that's why generally the story for a movie, or series, is not made by a single person, but by a team behind it (who generally don't even have the merit they deserve) helping to create the story, to avoid things like this. The other thing is that maybe he is not as creative as before, and now he is more for the money than for creativity and story telling, I think it could be several things

One of the few animated films I watched this year was Belle. Definitely wanna see Saber watch this one as the animation and music is beautiful but the story and pacing is really weird and the plot definitely didn’t go where I thought it would

IMO, it might've worked better if the world hadn't been divided - if it was just 'luck'. Cos the thing is, luck is subjective and many different cultures have different opinions on what is lucky and unlucky; For example, the black cat is seen as *lucky* in some parts of the world where white cats are unlucky. They could've had it more vague and IMO with Sam, maybe having her jsut be kicked out of the orphanage might've made the 'determination' message stronger cos being *homeless* is truly B A D luck. And when she goes to the luck world, she might've learned that it isn't *luck* that will save her, but determination and community spirit (aka, finding support and suchlike). I think that would've been more impactful.

Or perhaps the luck world itself is weirdly, irrationally culturally segregated even though all the stuff they're making is the same stuff. Purple stuff? Blue stuff? Just different unrelated crystals grown around the same actual metaphysical luck which is random and uncontrollable. The luck world has its own good luck / bad luck culture, its own luck racism or whatever, where what they're making doesn't make a difference the way they think it does.

Honestly I agree with Saber here! I think it would maybe have been not only easier for younger audiences or understand but also hit the theme better of enduring if Sam had like actual bad bad luck. Like getting struck by lightning but still surviving! Or whenever she walks it’s always raining or something! I mean look at the animated short film with this similar idea. That dude had like BAD BAD luck.

The idea that bad things NEED to happen feels so icky and is an awful message. The world CAN be better, it's just about whether or not people put effort into making it better. But that requires money and empathy, so instead we're fed this "Life isn't fair" myth as a way to cope.

I'm gonna push the point that this movie could say something actually meaningful if it didn't pull punches: in a story about luck and how bad luck hypothetically matters, why can't this explore the concept of a meritocracy? Case in point, there **are** people in the world who fail upward and get by on nothing but their incredibly good luck, and very often those people are the absolute **worst** ! I can totally see an alternate version of this idea where the antagonist is Sam's polar opposite: someone born so lucky that they have no reason to self-examine or learn how to be a decent person. You don't need to go the extreme of "oh well its good that some people are so unlucky that they get cancer actually" to see the point that if you want to improve yourself in a meaningful way, you need a lot more than just good luck on your side. Privilege as a concept is entirely about the advantages of being born in the right circumstances, how is that not about luck? Nobody wants to be unlucky, but how we deal with our hard times is what builds our character - something that this movie seems to have a concerning lack of, because it's too busy trying to justify its existence.

Yeah, like Gladstone Gander in the recent Ducktales series was handled much better, I think. Edit: And you're absolutely right, the fact they sidestepped privilege is a huge disadvantage to nuance and the story itself. Ducktales also kinda does this but I'd say overall their stories are more fully developed (which admittedly they have a whole series to do that in but when we're first introduced to Gladstone and then the episode when he lost his good luck, that covers most of it in one hour when combined.)

An excellent idea. And this is the problem with almost everything in Hollywood: ALMOST NO ONE IN THE ESTABLISHMENT CAN WRITE A GOOD STORY ANYMORE. Even when the technical aspects are perfect, a lazy or bad story DOOMS it. A clever addition to your idea: Sam defeats this lucky antagonist by redirecting the consequences of her own bad luck via Rube-Goldberg-like domino effects.

It could’ve been interesting if you had an opening with her narrating, going “People say I have bad luck. Like, REALLY bad luck. But personally? I don’t believe in bad luck. Or bad luck for that matter. It’s all in the perspective of things and knowing how to deal with the situation you’re in!” *meanwhile a montage of bad things happening to her is playing* And it’s like, that’s her “super power”, in a way? That she’s really actually unlucky BUT she doesn’t let it get her down and therefore refuses to accept that that’s just how her life is. Maybe she’s even like “Okay, so maybe I do believe in luck. Not bad luck, but good luck. And yeah, my life hasn’t been easy, but I believe that all I need, is one lucky break!” And that’s what she’s trying to achieve with the coin. Both for herself but also for Hazel or other people, like, maybe she has another kid who already got adopted who really wants to play baseball well so they can get a scholarship ship but they’re not quite good enough yet, and the moral of that part is that using luck to “cheat” won’t make them a better baseball player, so when they run out of luck, they can’t do as well as they want to, or suddenly Hazel is flooded with adoption offers, and she can’t seem to connect with any of them, cuz they weren’t interested in a child, as much as a doll they could prance around or something? Or that, the black cat is “unlucky” because he thinks he is, so he’s amplifying his own feelings of being unlucky??? I dunno, I guess I’m rambling.

If you want to see this kind of message done well, I highly recommend the short film "Merry Madness" by Dead Sound. It tells far more elegantly that bad things and good things go hand-in-hand and you need both to overcome obstacles, and to truly live. And then its sequel "Scary And Strange" gives the vital caveat that _you shouldn't use the importance of bad things in life as a reason to stand passively by in the face of suffering._ Which Luck completely misses in its over 90 minutes of screentime.

@@gracekim25 I think Perspective swap would have done this movie better Start in the luck world with the cat get all the exposition out of the way, way faster that way would have done alot to streamline and focus on the more personal conflict later on and the morals would be the unlucky cat understanding why the yin and yang is needed but also have a glitch be found. IE Yeah CEO we got some major bugs the distribution of luck is uneven we got the super lucky and the super unlucky. Its causing problems.

The way you describe this film kind of reminds me of Milo Murphy's Law, I recall you never got into Phineas and Ferb but basically it was the next show Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh made. The premise was around the titular Milo Murphy, a descendant of the namesake of Murphy's Law, who wherever he goes things would always go wrong. He's kind of similar to how you describe Eugene from Hey Arnold: despite facing constant adversity in his life, he always manages to be upbeat and positive about his condition (yes, Murphy's Law is an actual condition here). However, it kind of eventually goes into territory where they start explaining how Murphy's Law works and it's all based on "probability ions" or some shit (they reveal that Phineas and Ferb have similar ions but for positive probability, which IMO just totally fucks with PnF as a show but that's another story, also yeah Phineas and Ferb crossed over with MML and the show basically since then became reliant on PnF, Doofenshmirtz even moves in with the Murphys... anyway as said that's another story). Basically, they kind of started to explain the "logic" of it and it just made things more confusing, and you also had even with the cartoony nature despite things being quite exaggerated Milo and the people around him never end up with anything THAT bad happening for the most part, and if it does it does feel resolvable. It's kind of confusing and messy for me, lol.

I think the problem is that they made bad luck their own thing instead of bad luck just being the absence of good luck, like cold is the absence of heat. And that a person has an amount of luck designed at birth at random or something like that. Then rant about how that's unfair and the dragon saying that "luck was never about fairness" and the character realizing that life is just unfair and that there will always be people more lucky than you but also people more unlucky, but besides that doesn't dictate how bad or good your life is going to be, just that your life is what you make of it.

How tf could they do absolutely nothing with a character based around having bad luck. There’s so many ways that bad luck can affect a character’s appearance, like not being conventionally attractive or if they’re accident-prone, they might have bandages. Their personality can reflect their situation by being cautious or pessimistic, or it can be inverted and be optimistic in the face of adversity. Instead, Sam has just absolutely nothing that stands out. It’s the key issue with the film’s dogma, there’s a complete lack of strong direction other than it superficially feeling like a Disney/Pixar film. I can still see a great deal of potential in manipulating a world of luck, but they had very little idea on how to tap into that potential with this film.

If you want magical realism done in animation, I suggest checking out The Tatami Galaxy and Night is Short, Walk on Girl. Both anime in similar styles with the same director, based off of books by the same guy, and with a couple of reoccurring characters between them and some shared themes.

John Lasseter only arrived at Skydance Animation during the middle of the film's production; so he wasn't able to give his full input on the film right away. But I firmly believe with the next upcoming films under his belt at Skydance, everything will be alright! 'Luck' is only the beginning!

Oh man, this is super weird cause I made a character years back cursed with bad luck. But it was BAD luck (burning her town down) to comedic bad luck and her story is about her ability to keep smiling and keep being a kind, optimistic person despite that.

one of the things i noticed while watching the movie, is that sam has literally no flaws whatsoever. she is entirely unrelatable. like, you're really going to try and tell me that she's given a magical lucky penny, and her first thought is "i need to give this to hazel!"? when her entire character is about how she has bad luck? you REALLY expect me to believe that she wouldn't at least wrestle with the thought of keeping the penny for herself? like, no dilemma of "i could keep this for myself and my life would get better, but maybe this little girl could use it more"? the argument could be made that the whole point of her going to luck world and trying to steal a penny + destroying the bad luck mixer, is the movie's attempt at making her do something 'bad', but it's not a selfish thing she's doing for herself. she's not stealing the penny so she can have it, or giving the whole world only good luck so she won't be unlucky anymore, she's doing it for other people. everything she does in this movie is for someone else, and it's incredibly hard to imagine myself in her situation and go "yeah, i'd sacrifice everything good in my life for other people even though my life kinda sucks, comparably". she's TOO good, it's like she's not even human. just some walking bucket of good morals that can do no wrong.

YES I COMPLETELY AGREE. her only personality trait is “nice person” and it’s boring she is not engaging at ALL. nice people can still have other personality traits and I agree I would be more interested if she took the penny because she’s fed up of the bad luck ruining her life. Like she did nothing memorable in this movie?? did she even get angry once??? i think she had a lil emotional “it’s my fault moment” but I mean it didn’t really hit because she had no consequences and no character actually told her “you ruined this” because it was her fault and she doesn’t even get told off?? but the cat was being arrested 10 minutes ago for lying??? like the audience is not going to engage with your protagonist if the protagonist does nothing. Why couldn’t we see something that actually makes sam realize the consequences of her actions?? why cant we see her arguing with the cat why isn’t she mad that he LIED TO HER AND MADE HER COME FIX HIS MESS. like this girl was so boring istg

I just thought it was really stupid that they didn't even make her think for a moment that "hey maybe I could give this the hazel and once she's adopted I can keep it for myself!' or that even by the end of the movie they don't end up getting a lucky penny to share or keep for themselves they just got to deal with having a I wouldn't say a crappy life but a inconvenient life which isn't exactly the greatest thing to live with

I don't actually mind that she wanted to give the magic penny to her friend, its kind of beautiful (to me, at least) that when someone is given phenomenal cosmic powers and their first instincts are "how can I help people's lives to make the world a less miserable place to be?". But I can see your point for how little of a character Sam actually is.

I know I'm late, but I think that the minor inconveniences SHOULD be there, and then there'd be something that would actually bring the protagonist down but also make her perseverance shine, almost like the Memory Dump in Inside Out, and have a sort of bigger road block that has already existed in the world to really play a role other than "oh look I'm in the world". Along with what some other comments said, the movie needs to also show how the system messes up orphans' lives from their line of work to their living situation instead of what was shown in the movie, which is pretty much false. They, specifically the writers, missed a lot of opportunities in making the plot better and have more major character development, but they did do an okay job from what I've seen from you.

Why did they bring heavy real world problems like never getting adopted into this if they weren't willing to explore those themes properly? Sounds like they should've stuck to the dropping your sandwich level of stuff instead. Then you could've had the lession be, "don't let the little things get to you". Characterize the main character as being in a comfortable position in life but plaged by minor misfortunes. Coworkers jokingly call her a harbinger of doom. Things break when she's around. Etc. She curses her luck and vows to reverse it, whatever it takes. Insert montage of her talking to tarrot readers and throwing coins in a fountain, only to show that the reader is a carnival hack and the coin bounces off the fountain and into a raindrain. Later in the movie, after some stuff I'm not being paid to write about happens, she realizes that with the minor inconveniences of her life came funny stories, bonding opportunities, and unexpected discoveries. She remembers getting all her friends to sign her cast, telling people about her day and making the whole room light up with laughter, her friends coming to cheer her up after a bad turn, etc. When she stops the dragon, she says, "Most of my best moments happened because of my bad luck. Without all that rain, none of those flowers would grow".

As someone who went through the foster system and never got adopted - when you age out, they do try to help you find housing (usually very low-income housing in a dangerous area, wherever's the cheapest they can find) and try to help you find a job because otherwise, you're literally just a teenager on the street. What are they supposed to do, just toss you on the curb with your backpack and say "Good luck! Sucks to be you!" They do try to help you with basic schooling, and some states will try to help with community college and stuff like that. That's not LUCKY, that's the basics of survival. I'd say she had a lot of bad luck to never get adopted and to be stuck in an apartment that's probably in a dangerous area (of course they wouldn't show the worse sides of this in a kid's movie) and to be entirely without a support system besides what little the government would toss her way out of legal obligation. The apartments aren't free, either - you HAVE to be working, and at least 1/3 of your income will be taken for rent, often higher no matter how crappy the apartment is, usually percentage based on your income. If you lose your job or whatever? Well, better find a new one fast before your rent comes due, if you can't pay it then you're clearly not putting in the effort, so have fun on the streets getting an even quicker ticket to the prison pipeline! You're INCREDIBLY lucky if they give you any kind of assistance for food or anything, either - you're going to be living just scraping by for a long time, and if you're really lucky maybe you can find a better job or qualify for assistance for higher education to get better work or whatever, but chances are that are very, very low. The vast majority of kids who age out of the system without being adopted or having support end up on the streets or in prison within a few years, if they don't just end up dead.

Wow, I got a lot out of this. And I agree, people's perception of good and bad luck can be pretty skewed. That said, I would have liked to see more of how our protagonist feels about this (like maybe explore how burnt out she is at work or more about wanting to know more about her real family) which would make her question whether she's lucky or not. You can still do that in a children's film just by changing the tone a little. Personally, that is the thing I'm more interested in than visiting the "world of luck". In a way, this kind of reminds me of Kiki's Delivery Service, and it's DEFINITELY NOT because of the cat.

Thanks for the input. When Saberspark mentionned the apartment, job and online education as "lucky" I was thinking "wait, is the US system so skewed that even those basic things are NOT a thing? I feel kinda reassured a little bit that at least those basics are covered somehow.

@@LeSarthois They usually at least make an attempt at them for a couple years, but after a certain amount of time - or if you manage to get an income source at or slightly above the poverty line - you're on your own. Here in the US, if you're on any kind of assistance and you manage to save up a penny over 2000 dollars - maybe saving up for a car to help you get to a better job, or to put a down payment on a better apartment, whatever - your assistance will be cut off, and if you are on assistance, they have a set amount that you get each month for everything you have to pay for. If you're on disability or social security assistance of any kind and able to work any kind of job, you have to send them your pay stubs every month, and whatever money you make from your job, they take out of your next month's payment, so unless your job pays you enough to get off assistance entirely you're literally better off NOT working because of the prices of gas to get to work, clothes for work, ect.

@@notationmusical Oh I agree, and maybe being put in situations with a potential boyfriend or something and really wanting to have someone to talk to about it, but without an adult support system like parents, grandparents, ect. in her life she has no one to ask, or seeing kids playing in the park with their families as she walks to work and having that sadness, or trying to learn how to drive but having no one to teach her - those would be interesting to explore.

Its basically about the same here in Canada for fostercare as I grew up in fostercare myself and aged out got put on disability too though I work on and off but can only make so much a month and it just helps only so much make any more than allowed you get cut off and have to support yourself off that job and like saving up is impossible cant save money up when everything is so expensive now these days.

Actually, in the US children who end up in foster or who get adopted are given some free college tuition by the government because they don't have parents to save up funds nor can work to make such savings (my friend had two adopted sisters and they got enough funds for an Associate degree) But alot of foster kids who age out of the system don't even get to college cuz they usually flunked out of school..or lose their important paper work (such as birth certificates) which you need to get an ID or driver's license.. and end up homeless Aging out of the system is alot of the time a death sentence (cuz the state basically makes you defend for yourself.. they help a little but after a while your very much alone)

Your talk about whether or not we actually need bad luck reminds of how often I have wished I didn't make mistakes, and how I don't care if that means I can never "learn from my mistakes," because I wouldn't make mistakes in the first place (not-so-incidentally, I'm also that person who would rather feel always middling than having big highs and lows)

It really saddens me about the current status of HBO Max. They're getting rid of lots of good content, the majority is animated

Dude In Finding Nemo, Marlin losses his wife and all of his children other than Nemo, in the opening act no less. I think they played it way too safe to not have anything really bad happen.

It kinda sucks that it was disappointing, cus I love the style of the animation. Still mostly main stream but I love how the cat looks and it's shape

Disclaimer that I haven't watched the movie (and don't really plan on it), but if they wanted to do the "what if we only had good luck" thing and have the message be that the world needs balance... Why not show the actual consequences of having a world with only good luck? Like have the luck dragon succeed in removing bad luck from the equation and then show how miserable the world becomes because of that. Great potential for comedy there too, like at first its great but after two weeks everyone is like "ugh I won the lottery AGAIN?!" And then the climax could be a daring mission with the protagonist and the cat and some of the side characters they met along the way going to restore bad luck. Idk just a random thought based on this and other reviews I've seen.

I feel like there should've been some personal stakes involved. Like Sam should've been caught between wanting to use the penny for herself, and using it to help give her friend a better life. Feels like there were no real emotional stakes in the story.

Orphan: doesn't get adopted Orphanage: gives it a free apartment in the city Orphan: man I have had luck!

The protag being super "unlucky" definitely reminds me of a character from Genshin Impact. His name is Bennett and he actually is the most unlucky character I've seen, but is relentlessly positive in the fact of it. He ends up making bad food that his buddies all eat on an adventure and they all get sick and end up getting stuck in a cave for like two days. Like little things happen to him just end up escalating everything. Would have been nice if maybe they did something like that for this character.

I'm really interested to see what films come out of this new studio, what with many talented people having left Disney for this.

I think to solve the issue of "what is 'luck'?", I think you need to separate the 'actions' and 'results' of luck. The bad luck that Sam has seems more like challenges to her smaller tasks or goals (that would only affect her actions). While the 'everything' she has is more of the result of her affected actions (and everyone else helping her out). Or you know, having many minor bad luck results is not the same as Big bad luck results (fate).

That last bit is really interesting! Imagine if she went on a journey to improve her luck, only to find out she was originally going to suffer the worst fate in history, and they've been helping her all along by doling out the bad vibes in manageable chunks of "bad luck?" Or even on a smaller scale, like stubbing her toe and spilling her coffee are a tradeoff not falling down a manhole later in the day. She complains about her misfortune until learning that she's had this whole network of magic beings frantically helping her however they can. That'd be one way to explore the theme of perspective.

Milo Murphy's Law did this concept a bit better (without the deep dive into the logistics of luck), but showing a character that faces constant unlucky events and displaying how they deal with that.

Tbh i think when i first saw trailer for this i was kinda interesting in the Protagonist being plain. Not an over the top design, not some wicked hair, most random ass eye color, just a human being, like most of us are. It doesn't help with that character standing out but its a nice thing to have a character that honestly looks like a person would in a crowd, hell perhaps it could have been even integrated into the plot [which sadly it aint unless you wanna count it as a bad luck to be plain]

This film really dropped the ball in character design. You should be able to look at the main character and see someone with bad luck. Fuzzy hair, broken glasses, band aids, clothes with bleach spots.

fr character design should be able to tell you about the character. You see someone with perfect hair, clean formal outfit and you’ll know the character is uptight and a perfectionist. You see someone with mismatched shoes messy hair and colourful outfit and you can tell they’re care free and clumsy. Sams design does absolutely nothing it’s basic and boring and u cant tell anything about her

I know a lot of people work on these films. I just can’t help seeing a connection between a head producer with a troubling history with women, and a character design more focused on being attractive than helping tell the story.

While I understand that Sam was being incredibly selfless in wanting a Lucky Penny to help Hazel get adopted and find her "forever home", I just don't understand why she needed to be unrealistically unlucky if she wasn't written to want the penny for herself. It just seems like they didn't want to write her to be a selfish character? But she was still incredibly entitled to demand that the cat give her a replacement penny after she lost his original one.

The reason I feel they made her so unrealistically unlucky, was to tie the fact that she hadn't been adopted with her unluckiness in her mind to give her even more drive to help Hazel. Speaking as someone who grew up in care... I know what it's like to feel absolutely cursed and the true meaning behind when it rains it pours, so just another world and character building, but in my opinion, actually a pretty good one.

she was just very bland. like give us a main character with FLAWS. sam is very formulaic she’s nice all the time never stands up to anyone and even though she is the entire reason for the land of luck falling apart she gets 0 consequences from the other characters. Bob however was almost sent away?? even though it’s sams fault they’re in that mess. I wanted to see her get angry lash out do ANYTHING to make me interested in her. I’m not saying nice characters are always boring but usually they have a trait other than just “good person” why couldn’t Sam be selfish? I would have been more interested if the movie she took the penny for herself because she was fed up of her life and wanted a new beginning. The little girl thing is cute but it’s boring. I just wish they actually went outside the box with sam :/

You can stipulate that the reason for Sam not getting adopted was cos she caused so many issues in those homes by being so unlucky (i.e. constantly breaking things, making a mess, etc.) but they don't blatantly show that so it's only a guess and not a confirmation. And regarding the penny thing, I think I would've liked it more if Sam initially wanted to have the penny for herself but later on, she chooses to give it to Hazel as a selfless act.

I haven't seen this one, but I definitely agree with everything you said! Espec the Eugene vs. Sam luck comparison! Eugene has REAL bad luck, and he's a great character! Awesome vid, as always, Saber! Missed your vids!

"The Land before Time" hits hard in the feels, killing off the main character's mom, and showing how he recovers from that and goes on to make a journey he would think impossible without her. My seven-year old brother was obsessed with that movie. We had no way of knowing that just after he turned nine, our Mom would be diagnosed with Cancer and die shortly after that. I really think that "The Land Before Time" helped my little brother (and me) prepare for that trial and eventually get through it. I think people do kids a tremendous disservice by only depicting a world in which the hardest thing that people have to face is their sandwich falling down or not being able to find their lucky penny. Even if they don't have to face significant trials until their adulthood, I think it can help give them compassion to understand that there are real trials in the world. We don't need to give them nightmares, but a hopeful cartoon is just the vehicle for helping kids to start to understand some of the significant challenges that millions of them are already starting to face. I haven't seen Luck, but just going off what you've written, it sort of reminds me of Inside Out, which I thought suffered from having a protagonist who led too privileged a life.

I feel like with the concept of luck there has to be a possibility of something pretty bad happening to the character the luck is happening to or the people around them so I definitely agree. Also I think death shouldn't be a forbidden topic in kids movies, like it doesn't have to even be graphic, if there's some sort of major luck involved there should be a major impact on the main character because of their luck (like other people could get hurt when their luck causes something really bad to happen). There should also be some way they deal with their luck (do they ignore it and try to brush it off as coincidence, or are they aware of it and fear it and try to avoid situations where they could cause major incidents?). If there are barely any steaks then there is nothing to really explore regarding luck.

@Mitch Johnson Something must be wrong with me then because I saw Land Before Time on Cartoon Network when I was 11(I'm 33), and when my mom had a stroke in April of that year, I was angry and distraught. Though in thinking about it, I guess seeing the scene of the death of Little Foot's mother did help because I'm not traumatized, and with my mom at age 70 and with one foot in the grave, I'm more at ease with it than I think I should be. As for doing kids a disservice by depicting softer adversities like losing a lucky penny or dropping a sandwich, or the privileged life in Inside Out? Being a writer myself, I've got a jaded perception on this. Since women and girls are seen as more emotional than men, they're underestimated in how much they can take when presented with adversity in a fictional setting. Hence why films aimed at them pull their punches when presenting adversity to a main character. Good thing I'm writing novels and comics, because I can get away with a lot more.

there are charcters that have gone through far worse and is something that shouldn't be quantify as oops lost my keys agagin.

The movie was good at the beginning but they really messed up the ending. The “Evil” Dragon wasn’t even evil, they could’ve made the world better. Also the talking cat! Everyone just accepts that it can talk at the end of the movie!?!

@@kitieriwhite7758 bots are accounts whose sole purpose is to promote something. my first bot encounter was about a year ago when i kept getting bots for flixzone (i don't know if they still exist). they spam comments/replies on videos in order to get as many people as possible to click on whatever it is. i don't work for youtube, so i can't answer why they're not doing anything about it. my best guess is that there's too many to take care of, as saberspark isn't the only channel who suffers from it. if you see a bot, don't click on the link, as it could take you to a virus, a p**n site, or some weird/random youtube video

I agree with that honestly. I actually enjoyed the film even though it was a little repetitive and the loss of the Penny seemed to be a plot hole.

I almost feel like the design is overdone atp. Everyone’s trying to capture that Disney 3d style that first debuted w Tangled (I think). It was super cute then and really refreshing. But now Disney is depending on it and companies outside of Disney/Pixar do it too. It’d be nice to see a different art style or face for once. Maybe some normal eyes lol.

I got Apple TV as a birthday gift when wolf walkers came out and kept it for Central Park

I really loved the design of the dragon lady. That was all.

Honestly, even though i will admit that Luck had it's ups and downs like all movies do i for one didn't think it was that bad. at least the story was kinda interesting, i mean a world where good luck and bad luck are made that's a world i would definitely explore if it were real.

I just saw a Pinocchio trailer in this video's ad. They didn't even show Pinnochio, and they made the fairy godmother black. Beyond that, the fact that Disney is spitting out another live action remake speaks volumes. Let's face it they can go forever adapting old movies they have if they just branch outside of the really old really classics.

Me and my friends watched this while very drunk and absolutely lost our minds when the cat was Scottish. In that moment, it was possibly the Funniest thing on planet earth. The film wasn't masterful, but I think for a studio debut it's quite good! An easy, nothing movie i can turn my brain off too and enjoy

I knew the movie was weak, but I couldn't put it into words until I read the comments and watched the video. The movie pulled ALL of its punches and it's really sad. You really want the theme of needing bad luck to hit home? Make her actually struggle, like Saberspark said. There's also a severe problem of "tell, don't show" with the worldbuilding; they just kept adding more and more things without spending any time on the characters and their internal struggles. Issues occur and/or are resolved not because Sam worked hard for it, but because it's convenient for the plot. For instance, I remember screaming internally for Babe the dragon to use the two good stones just to make Sam struggle, but no, she just gives up over one talk with her. It would've been WAY more compelling to see what would happen if the two good stones were put in place instead of just a dumb talk, to see the world actually go out of balance to prove Sam's point. I don't really mind all the worldbuilding, but if it only serves as an inconvenience rather than a direct attack on the character, there's really no point for it to be there.

"She has inconvenience bad luck" Literal abandoned Orphan, the worst luck she had happened long before the story began.

The Pirate Tinkerbell you brought up had more emotional depth than you describe imo

I also found it convoluted and frustrating. The runtime was way too long but the subject matter is heavy. Your back story to the production kind of explains it. The controversy behind the scenes affected the quality of the cartoon.

Honestly I felt like Hazel didn't deserve so much effort from Sam? She didn't care, and was literally rude to her like... Bro, you don't go "yeah but YOU didn't get adopted" on someone who literally spent their life waiting for it? And being disappointed and suffering trauma from this ? It's the main point that annoyed me in the movie... The main goal felt blend and just here to have one?

fr they didn’t even showcase their bond quite well. Like I feel the relationship between them could have been made an interesting dynamic and maybe having hazel show sympathy for sam would have made me actually want the penny for her. A bit of a “I wish you could have a door” moment where you feel for the characters. but hazel is consistently rude and I would have preferred sam just took the penny for selfish reasons because that would be way more interesting

I saw the scene of Sam and Hazel talking on the bed and Sam trying to assure Hazel and Hazel being like "but it didn't work for you" and thought how it was just doing wrong everything that the parallel scene of Encanto did amazingly. There's really nothing that endears us to Hazel or her bond with Sam like there is with Antonio and his bond with Mirabel. Hazel never shows any sympathy for Sam's plight*, only worries that the same fate might befall _her._ And then repeatedly asks for Sam to help with it. Contrast with Antonio's "I wish you could have a door," bringing empathetic attention to where even Mirabel herself doesn't. (*Not that it's much of a plight. As saberspark mentioned, her "plight" basically boils down to a bunch of inconveniences. Which suck, but she got insanely lucky where it could otherwise seriously damage her: she gets a free apartment, easily gets and keeps a job, keeps up with her schooling, is healthy and conventionally attractive, et cetera. The movie doesn't give us much to pity her for other than "oh man, rotten luck that your sandwich fell")

@@peeblekitty5780 ahh I completely agree and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who seen the parallel between this scene and the scene with mirabel and antonio. Hazel just comes across as rude the entire time constantly saying how “Sam has bad luck” which is true but the movie never really shows why Sam feels so attached to hazel? whereas in encanto we see antonio does worry his fate will end up like mirabel but he actually shows sympathy for her and also doesn’t treat her any different because of it unlike most others in the movie. That’s why their relationship is so endearing, kids are often the ones who don’t see people for their achievements or pitfalls they see them as a good friend who helps out. Hazel doesn’t even seem to like Sam that much and they don’t have any meaningful conversations despite that attempt at one. You summed up perfectly how I feel about their relationship

This reminds me of an animated music video I saw a while ago. There was a female character that was burdened with constant good luck to the point that she was upset that she couldn't have fun with her life, and a male character who suffers with extreme bad luck and is very paranoid and clumsy. When they meet, their opposing luck balances each other out and it's really sweet. Both characters had fun personalities and designs and weren't too simple, and it was literally just a music video.

I saw little plushies as prizes at an arcade and that was the only advertising or merchandise for this movie I've ever seen. I now realize why.

I love how i got an ad for luck while watching this video
