There are certainly worse movies, but i think the hate was justly rooted in something deeper. The movie represented everything wrong with Hollywood, banking on cheap, uncreative, and cliched ideas while trying to justify its existence by throwing buzzwords, references, and celebrity voices. It was the ultimate demonstration of the disconnect between studios and audiences.

It says a lot about how much everyone hated this movie that my history teacher from the time, who was a very chill guy overall, said he saw it over the weekend and went on a rant about how much it sucked with the entire class cheering him on.

I mean, the film isn’t THAT bad in of itself, but it was such a cynical money hungry afterthought to its fundamental core, a living breathing joke about the lows Hollywood would stoop to fish out as much cash of the apathetic public as possible, but without the punchline. I didn’t hate it because its just not a film really worth having strong feelings for, positive or negative. I don’t consider it the worse film of all time because even that is way more credit than it deserves. Frankly I detest Ralph Breaks The Internet a lot more than TEM, because that film did everything TEM was guilty of along with shitting all over the previous character development and lesson from its predecessor. It was far more deserving of the hate TEM but it didn’t receive nearly as much flack.

1- Why object emojis are people. What they eat? Shouldn't house emojis be people too? 2- Why they need to scan themselves for each and every user. 3- This isn't "the world of emojis" but "the world of this nameless loser (hey kids he's just like you)" Does that mean there are millions of Genes? Or he's the only emoji in EMOJIKIND to ever fail his purpose? 4- What the hell is actually going on. Why they have houses and well society? If their only purpose is to be scanned and sent in messages. And how tf does that work? What if "Nameless Loser" wants to message some friend at 3 am? How do emojis know their user will use them? This isn't Toy Story like "The Claaaaw" they are totally aware their only purpose is to give "A E S T H E T I C" to the messages. But also funny how they think emojis ONLY exist in "Totally not WhatsApp with name of place ended in 'Polis', -Polis". Like... No? What if Alex is horny and searches on Incognito Mode using emojis? Are they DIFFERENT emojis? Because we hear that the Emoji-place-ended-with-polis Polis is the messaging app of Nameless Loser. What even is Textopolis? Because if you tell me a messaging app... It doesn't show ANYTHING about texting. And all the other Apps or Sponsors are way more clear what they are. My theory is that that place isn't the WhatsApp of the movie, but just the KEYBOARD.

The LEGO Movie is also basically a commercial but unlike the emoji movie, it holds up because it's easy to get immersed in the lego world. Lego Movie does good as a traveling multiverse movie AND characterizing blatant products. That major media didn't expect that, and had awkward reactions towards this success, was fun to witness. Many movies since have faltered in both, leaving Emoji Movie as this bland, nearly harmless film. It doesn't commit further narrative crimes, nor are its images as cherished as major IPs.

It was also really cool how they stuck to the hardcore rule that EVERYTHING in the lego world had to be made of legos. The CGI was really creative because they couldve easily phoned it in with mediocrely realistic effects of water, dust, lasers, etc, but they didn’t. Really believable concept especially considering it takes place partly in the imagination of a child.

Exactly, The Emoji Movie plays into the narrative that "Princess" is a negative. Plus it makes no sense since we SEE female Emojis (Smiler and Gene's mom) aren't Princess Emojis. So Jailbreak's whole conflict over "girls can only be Princesses" is contradicted by the movie itself.

@Planet Zoidstar They really where audacious to play up the feminist woes of girls being undervalued and unrepresented, when the main villain is a POWERFUL WOMAN, I would almost believe they where intentionally being subtlety tongue in check, but that would imply the script writing process wasn’t an afterthought to the main objective. (money obviously). Like, it’s totally fine if you want your girl power message, but at least be smart and consistent about it. It doesn’t even make sense to the actual function of the things they are advertising (emojis), most of the facial emojis are designed to be gender neutral, the movie just decided to make most of the emojis default male for an easy predictable romance subplot and a hamfisted feminist message that they weren’t even consistent with.

I feel like this movie could have done better if they it more like Sausage Party (Emoji Party)? Maybe have a message about social media addiction, how emojis are essentially a symptom of not being able to communicate with people the "traditional" way, and you could also make jokes about a lot of our apps are pretty much just legal spyware with how much data they collect. However, I think that may be too on the nose for their sponsors.

I think the irony in this movie is that Sony actually had a pretty decent opportunity to make a movie about mental health and how kids often use their phones to escape from their problems. Instead of actually making a good movie that talks about those issues in a healthy way, we instead just got a bunch of corporate shilling with a generic kids movie story to boot.

The emoji’s have their epic quest like kids movie characters normally do, so they can tell Alex to just put down his phone for 5 seconds and talk to his parents about what’s bothering him in a constructive way, with words, not with smiley faces.

They could've fixed the inconsistency with the emojis and how they function simply by establishing that the world exists within a server that connects to all phones, rather than just the one. It would better explain how the Meh emoji could accidentally create a unique face that gets sent to other devices. Maybe change up the story to make Meh into a glitch similar to Penelope from Wreck it Ralph, and the conflict could be the Smiler emoji trying to use Meh as a backdoor to access the server and take control of it, or maybe some virus entity is trying to reach the root of the server to destroy it. Still a pretty cliche story, but has greater stakes since destroying the server would not only delete the Emoji world, but would also have an impact in the real world as well.

The Emoji Movie is a cinematic masterpiece, truly the absolute pinnacle of human creation everything pales in comparison to this work of art. The plot is beautiful it has me gripping my seat for the full length of the runtime every time that it blesses my screen. When they found themselves in Candy Crush, I felt nothing but pure euphoria as Candy Crush is easily the greatest thing to bless the video game industry. The Just Dance scene made me get up in the theatre to boogie to the beat as I hoped that my efforts would be enough to get them through. Every time the scary evil emoji, Smiley came on-screen with her killer robots I was terrified, I was extremely scared and hoped that they would not get the good guys. The protagonists are the greatest to ever grace the big screen, with Gene, Jailbreak, and Hi-5 synergizing to form the greatest team of heroes since Paw Patrol. Gene is very relatable showing the audience that they can aspire to be whatever they want and that it is just everybody else holding them back from reaching their potential. Gene is an amazing character and the way he gets back up every time he fails is truly a work of art, his becoming a yellow piece of candy in Candy Crush was also very funny. Hi-5 voiced by James Cordon is absolutely hilarious, James Cordon is already a very, very funny man who gives me uncontrollable side-splitting laughter. In this movie, he is somehow even funnier everything he does is hilarious, and he clearly deserves to be in the V.I.P section at the start of the movie, and anybody who cannot see that is an idiot. Jailbreak is just another addition to the great characters seen throughout the film, her goals are mysterious and unclear, yet she helps Gene and Hi-5 on their honorable quest. She is an amazing hacker and super cool emo girl which makes the plot twist of her being the Princess so much better. The plot twist was the greatest ever seen in cinema on a level that has never been seen before. There as so many more amazing characters that I could write about such as Gene's parents but if I were to write about every good character in this piece of true cinema I would be here forever. The best part of this movie is the truly hilarious side-splitting humor, I touched on this briefly when mentioning the greatest comedian ever James Cordon, but I fear that I did not truly do the humor justice. Therefore, I will continue to write about the genius behind the comedy in this movie which is only to be truly comprehended by the smartest of all individuals. An interaction between the Poop emoji and his son is a notable example of this, Poop: Okay, Son, what should we do after the potty? Poop's Son: Should we wash our hands? What should we do? [They both start laughing] Poop: We're number two! Even while writing this, I am laughing, the genius behind that joke is perfect and every aspiring comedian should be taking notes. This is but a glimpse, a small window into the comedic genius and beauty behind the comedy throughout the film. The Emoji Movie is truly God's greatest gift towards humankind, we are truly not worthy of such a perfect gift as The Emoji Movie.

edits: grammar mistakes I think most of the anger started off in the animation/art community because a creative film (Popeye) was cancelled for this obvious cash grab. it definitely hit a sore spot of how corporations are always going for things that make money, rather than letting something artistic and different do it’s own thing. others then started to dog pile on the hate and it grew into everyone hating the film regardless if they watched it or not. it’s great that many people ended up hating it though, since now the company is letting itself have some more creative films (mitchell vs the machines and spiderverse 2)

I don't know if that really was his decision like he claims it was or if Sony forced him to do it while claiming it was his decision, but yeah, the reason Popeye is only in the form of line-art and not fully rendered is partly because of Tartakovsky himself, not The Emoji Movie. That film was just an easy target because, well, along with being a bad film, it was also announced around the same time Popeye's cancellation was revealed, hence why everyone was so quick to blame it without doing any actual research. Emojis are free, compatible and easy to use, but Sony decided to use that as a leverage to target kids (let's be honest, most of the viewers were kids) to buy/play whatever games/products the respective companies were willing to pay them to be blatantly advertised. Not only was the movie subpar in general, but its shameless corporate decision to market their movie as a kid-friendly flick but shove a whole bunch of shady advertisements only adults will pickup is what made people hate it.

You know what could have been a fun idea? If all emoji were a people, instead of a person. So you have a community of Smile emoji, one for Meh emoji, one of thumb-up emoji etc. And the emoji don't have a single emotion, that's just what appears on screen. When you send an emoji, you're actually sending an individual from that community to another phone. And each phone communities will be richer or poorer depending on the user and which emoji they use the most. So on one hand you can have your protagonist go from rich to poor and poor to rich by having him sent to different phones, and on the other you can show the personality of the phones' owners by showing which emoji they use more/less.

I remember hearing the discourse online about this movie. In one of the few instances of "I'll see for myself" out of me, I actually gave the movie a watch (pirated, of course). I went in with as blank a slate as I could, gave the movie a chance. But from scene to scene, I just got more and more bored. More insulted. This movie wasn't the abhorrent amalgamation of sin some reviews had made it out to be, but it was just as pandering and insulting. Hell, the movie even starts off shitting on its target audience, gen Z, in the first 3 minutes. I never fully finished watching it. At the last five or so minutes when the dance party happened, I just shoved the phone i was watching it on across the table. I was freaking done. So, were we too harsh on The Emoji Movie? No. No we were not. It got everything it deserved.

I'll still never forget that Sony cancelled a wonderful looking Popeye movie, one that was going to be directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, to focus on making THIS! Honestly, that's where my hate started, and this was long before The Emoji Movie was even released. Then I saw the Nostalgia Critic's review of it later on, and just the fact that they scrapped something way better for THAT just because "money" made me angrier. I'd honestly would've rather had a beautiful movie that might not have made as much as they want, but had a giant amount of love put into it (as well as it potentially gaining a cult following) than a bad movie with WAY too much money put into it that shamelessly put product placements everywhere, was all over with their message and was just "Ripoff Inside Out but w/Phones" anyhow.

Looking back at it the whole "Girls only get to be princesses as emojis" really was a kinda weird approach of female empowerment, because I am a woman myself and I don't think I ever looked at a regular emoji (or smiley) in my life and actively associated it with the male gender by default. Emojis/smileys have always been inherently gender neutral because they literally just convey a damn emotion or a certain concept. Ironically this movie *itself* was the one claiming that every neutral looking face is automatically male and something needs to be explicitly female coded to be able to represent a woman. Because apparently something is only female if she wears makeup? I will not pretend like I remember what emoji selection existed in 2017 but at the very least regarding the regular emojis available the lack of female representation was a non issue because emojis didn't represent men either. Or was this about the professions? Where there already alot of profession emojis in 2017? 6 years is a century for technological development, I can't tell anymore

  • @HikariMichi42

    @HikariMichi42

    4 ай бұрын

I completely agree with you. By the way, I looked it up. It appears that in 2015 (when the movie first went into production), profession emojis were mostly non-gendered/gender-neutral, and princess emojis were indeed among the few explicitly female emojis at the time (one of the explicitly male emojis being Santa Claus). There were also not many profession emojis on the whole. So that must be what the movie is referring to. But when the movie finally came out (in 2017) this reference had already been rendered obsolete, as many more profession emojis had been introduced in the movie's production time and all were available in both male and female versions (gender-neutral versions of all profession emojis weren't introduced until later). Prince emojis and Mrs. Claus emojis had also been added. So that's a great example of why making a movie based on a current trend isn't the best idea. Innovations can happen very quickly, instantly dating your movie and alienating your audience. (I found this out by looking at relevant timestamps from the Unicode website in the Wayback Machine, I thought that would be the quickest and easiest way to answer your question.)

First of all, I just wanna say that fart joke in the opening title was _perfectly_ timed. As for the Emoji Movie, the word "meh" perfectly sums it up. It's not the worst movie I've ever seen, but its probably the most thoughtless and cynical. There's not a single unique or creative idea to be found, in either the visuals or the writing. None of it is bad or incompetently made, but it's all so generic looking; every scene looks like it could have come from a commercial for an app, or maybe for car insurance. Mr. Enter summed it up well: character you design when you don't know how to draw telling a story you tell when you dont know how to write. Patrick Stewart as Poop was amusing, though. I could tell he certainly had fun voice acting.

I heard that they wanted Jordan Peele to voice the poop emoji. He was so insulted that he went on to quit acting and became a horror movie director

It's weird in retrospect how I have never seen this movie, but I have fond memories of it solely from memes and people like Jacksfilms spending 2017 clowning on it.

This is the film that Channel 5 (British TV network that is currently owned by Viacom) decided to play during Her Majesty's funeral! Whether that makes the film better or worse is entirely an exercise for the viewer.

It's ironic to me that the Sony president said that the Emoji Movie was built for people under 18, since in my experience, teenagers were the biggest and meanest critics. I was in high school at the time and good God, it was the school's favorite punching bag for a good few months. They insulted it in ways the even harshest critics couldn't dream of.

I think that The Emoji Movie had zero chance of being good, and I'll explain how and why. Emoji are not narrative characters. They are only characters in the sense that "!" and "?" and "&" are characters. They're pictorial representations of abstract concepts, from clouds to handshakes to Belgium. An angry emoji is meant to represent anger. A smile is meant to be smiling, and so on. If you decided something like "What if the devil emoji actually baked cupcakes in its spare time, and enjoyed the music of Mozart?", that would ordinarily be a little bit of character development and a good thing in any medium... Except here, it wouldn't work. Why? Because in developing the emojis, you erode what they stand for. For instance, if I showed you a picture of Naruto, what would you think? Now, I'm not going to make a claim here about how good or not Naruto is as a series- that isn't the discussion. You would know the character and tell me all about him, or you would legitimately not know the character and you'd be unable to say anything. But that's what a narrative character is. Emojis are the opposite. If you have an emoji that's a hamburger, you know what a hamburger is, and it's pretty unambiguous. This is the reason why anything that hypothetically got adapted into a movie, whether it's Final Space, or Bluey, or anything else has at least the _possibility_ that it could be good, so long as the character exist to be characters, and to have a role in their own stories. They have fundamental chances, however small, to be good. I don't think The Emoji Movie had even this. I'm going to risk putting my foot in my mouth here, because while you can argue something like Batman appearing in The LEGO Movie may have been corporate shilling, and Batman got his own spinoff movie, well... Batman's a character, isn't he? That's kind of why it works, because despite all the "I'm Batman!" jokes, well... Yeah, they actually had to do stuff with him in spite of how we likely all know a lot about the character. So, apologies for a long post, but that's my opinion on how and why I don't think The Emoji Movie could ever have had any chance of being good, on account of character development working against its core concept. Doing a movie on almost anything would ordinarily never hurt it to try and flesh out and develop its characters, whether it's Paw Patrol or Bob's Burgers or whatever else. But here, it does, and I would claim it's extremely conceited and arrogant for anyone with a creative soul and artistic integrity to have ever thought The Emoji Movie could have worked.

It might work if the characters were "generic" emojis whose faces morphed into the specific emojis that represented their mood. For example, their faces would normally be yellow. If they were angry, their faces would turn red. If they were feeling shitty, their heads would morph into poop emojis. They might have slight differences to differentiate one character from another, but their faces would still be round or roundish and yellow.
