Why Love Is More than a Feeling

Ойын-сауық

What if we were to make all our decisions solely based on how we felt in the moment?
You may be familiar with the four types of love: eros (love of desire), storge (love of affection), philia (love of friendship), and agape (self-giving love). While each of these forms of love are good in their own way, they have to be accounted for correctly.
Eros is the most temporary of all the loves. Feelings and desires are fleeting. So when we try and make decisions that are based on these desires we have, they’re bound to fail before we even make them, just because eros is so fragile. Imagine choosing your spouse, or your vocation, or your profession based on how you felt about it 5 years ago. Would you be happy with the outcome?
Eros has its place in our life, but we need to make sure we’re acknowledging the more important elements, especially when making decisions. Eros is fleeting, but the agape love God has for you isn’t. Focus on the things that last, and attend to the feelings that don’t, and enjoy the life God has laid before you.

don`t put that much attention of your circumstances, which is just a product of thought / Devil, like in the book of Job. Focus on the Lord instead & fast and your life will flourish. No attention to Devil destroys Devil, so just laugh about it. take it as a joke ("what is NOT") and offer it to God ("what is"). In faith difficulties vanish.

I think we all have to admit that when we have a crush on someone, it is more or less due to the appearances, body languages, and manners of the person, but of course as the friendship and relationship grow, we must go beyond the appearance and mere friendship into a commitment grounded by faith in God.

I think that having a crush is easy. It's impulsive, short term, often starts from the things you stated (Can be other causes too), and isn't something that lasts on a long term permanent basis. Love is well beyond that, it's long term, everlasting term I'd say it should be, isn't always sunshine rainbows pretty, involves sacrifice, is often tough, but is all the more rewarding. A crush will get you a one night stand fling or short term relationship, love will get you a strong everlasting relationship. Remember, to really have a strong everlasting relationship, we need God, and... GOD IS LOVE!

I have on only a few occasions felt physical attraction for someone not my husband since I got married. Did I act on those feelings? Nope. The love that I share with my husband is much deeper than mere feelings. Now, I did tell my husband about it, but that is also part of our relationship that we trust each other enough to share things like this. I would feel guilty about it if I didn’t tell him, because I would be hiding something. We don’t hide these feelings when they happen. We talk about it, clear the air, and remind each other how much love we really have together.

Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are. Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two. Louis de Bernières, Corelli's Mandolin It’s my favorite quote about love.

I agree with the message, but I would like to add that while eros is fleeting, it can be brought back in a good relationship. It is possible to fall in love with your spouse over and over again. It can be a conscious decision. I find the best way to do it is to stop and think about the reasons why you love your spouse. Observe the small details that make her/him cute and beautiful. Remember the romantic moments you had early in your relationship.

To all those reading this wanting to marry someone of another faith(or of NO faith): don't do it. I did and 10 years later, while we are still married, it hasn't been without extreme pain and suffering. It's a reason its a rule. Please. Just pray about it and get good guidance. Even a partner who says they don't care if you practice your faith, kids change everything. Your spouse can change and become more militant about their own beliefs (or in my case, lack of belief). Just don't do it. Trust me. Every choice you make has consequences and marrying someone who isn't on your level with faith, has big ones you cannot even fathom right now. The amount of suffering that is AVOIDABLE is not worth it. Yes, conversion stories like St. Monica's happen, and yes, God can do anything, but conversion comes within the heart. God won't force someone to accept Him. Please heed my warning out of love and charity - make another choice. Don't even consider becoming engaged to someone unless you know for certain you're on the same page about raising children in the faith. God bless you.

Mine was protestant and then he went full atheist. Now, of course people will say "Well Catholics can lose their faith, too". Yes, that's true. That said, you'll have way more in common with a PRACTICING protestant than any other religion. Have conversations about children (how they'll be raised - and don't give an inch on raising them Catholic, that's your duty, we either believe it's the true faith or we don't), roles in the family, etc long before engagement. Besides, the dispensations you'll have to get from your bishop vary if it's another baptised person or a non-baptised person.

People entering into the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony please, please, please, listen to him!!! I can not implore you enough! If you and your future spouse don’t align on any one point of the things Father says are important, please don’t get married. God will provide for you trust Him with your future! You owe it to your children and your grandchildren NOT to marry badly. After 28 years of abuse and suffering I can honestly say I wish I had heard any of this and been better advised but I wasn’t. I now am alone, broken, and struggling to see the good in any of my life. My children and grandchildren deserved better than what they got. And I myself, I deserved to be loved honored and cared about. If you expect to have a happy marriage, you must fight against your own ego and trust in the Lord with all your heart! May God in His infinite wisdom counsel your heart and mind and give you right reasoning. God bless you!

I wish I could give you a hug!!! I'll pray for you and your family. On the other side of the fence, not knowing love from a man and not having a family is hard. While we want to protect our future children from a bad marriage, it's also hard when you don't have a marriage. I'm a 37-year old virgin.

@@arcoiris890 Thanks. There are many people who consider being a virgin for so long wrong, but look at the people who've made bad choices and had to go through divorce. I wouldn't wish that to anyone. Besides, if God doesn't send anyone my way, I can't lower my standards to accept someone, who doesn't walk the same path to Christ, just to say I have someone in my life.

This video is everything! One of the reasons why I don't watch the Bachelor/Bachelorette franchises is because it portrays unrealistic romance expectations that go against the Catholic perspective of love. As Catholics, the type of love we should strive for is agape love, and I'm glad Father Mike talked about this!

I am really needing this. Over the years, I've always made this mistake of following Eros blindly and it led me to terrible relationships. When it happened, I wasn't trying to be Christian and no one even stopped me. Every time a break up occurs (and so far it has always been initiated by me) I think I learnt my lesson, but soon after I fall in love deeply with someone and dive right in without much thought. I can never resist it. Please pray for me.

As he's speaking this ... the song Marry You by Bruno Mars is playing in my mind. - Love this song~ however, the song is fun. Living it to that Fr. mentions here is very true. My late husband and I did all the firsts together. No feeling can make me "feel "like I'd want to enter into marriage again. Simply because I've loved and been. Love is more than a feeling indeed... we endure through love all the good and all the bad, it intertwines into so much more, we become aware of it's endless depth with presence. Feeling is something to that we can feel with anyone, but endless depth and presence in love... we can not. There is indeed divine providence and will to the very graces of this truth that entitles us in our relationship in marriage or togetherness. Feeling is only an expression to that love extends us in our depths of soul and self. - I think we need to hunger for the presence of depth in love not for the feeling of. - Great words from Father. God Bless ... and people feel the music, but live to do the dance. Just sayin...

Thanks for this video Father. I can’t help but notice how for the past few days, in the Bible in a year podcast, the Psalms you read differ by a verse from the corresponding day in the Bible in the year plan. I think the mismatch was the time we were reading Psalm 119. If I remember correctly, you first read Psalm 119:1-55 on the day the reading plan showed Psalm 79. God bless you for the awesome things you are doing and may His grace sustain you.

I agree with you Fr. Mike. People should also use their brain to determine if the reason why they love someone more than their wife or husband. They shouldn't push it off to the side. I don't want to give you more work than you already have😁 so just a suggestion. If an adult 35+ asks you in confession what the feeling they have for someone else means just say "the feeling is spiritual and they should use resources they have to come to a good decision about their life. Resource means connecting the dots in their life that might have brought them here to feel this way, is their really something negative going on in my life, and say a priest can't help you it is out of my scope bc theirs more to it than the bible, philosophy or theology". God bless Fr. Mike. Anna

I think Fulton Sheen put it best when he told his tv audience that a diet of romance novels and frivolity will lead to much unhappiness. My addition to this is the warning of being sucked into a ship. With reality tv and fictional serials, there are active fandoms out there with contingencies for one ship over another. Looking back on it now, I see the same dynamic among the sects in Catholicism. They all want to be on the barque of St Peter, but there is only one.

I think people think I'm just a cynic because I totally agree. While love as an emotion is great, its not sustainable and often spews reality. Whenever I'm laughing at a rom com because they have these emotions and drop their lives hardly knowing anything about each other, its because I connect love with charity and marriage with both romance and practicality/ connection.
