Setting Boundaries for Yourself and Others

Ойын-сауық

We often receive the behavior we are willing to tolerate, but what does that mean for our daily interactions?
Communication is the clearest way to let someone know how you are feeling. When meeting with someone who you feel is being rude, we may try to give outward signs of our discomfort, but we can’t guarantee they’ll understand unless we tell them directly. And obviously, this isn’t easy.
There aren’t many people who love confrontation, and even some that do anything they can to avoid it. We’re always so afraid that if we bring up something that we want changed, or share something that’s hurting us, that we’ll destroy that relationship. But more times than not, confronting these things head on and setting these boundaries won’t hurt the relationship but will strengthen it.
This isn’t just relevant for our relationships with other people either - it’s relevant to our relationship with ourselves. How many times have we made personal goals or aspirations but never changed our behaviors to make them possible? We get the behaviors that we’re willing to tolerate, even within ourselves.
St. Ignatius of Loyala had an exercise where he would imagine two sides, the side of the evil one and the side of the Lord. In this exercise, he would look at his decisions and choices for his life and decide, based on which side they fell on, who he would ultimately join: the evil one, or the Lord. By birth we belong to the evil one, but by baptism we belong to the Lord. Each side is battling for us to come over to their side, and if we are striving to be on the Lord’s side, then we have to recognize boundaries for ourselves that we can’t tolerate.
This battle does not need to be fought alone-in fact, it can’t be. We must rely on the infinite grace of God, which he is longing to give us every second of our day. What are the behaviors we need to remove from our lives for the glory of God?

Ah! How painfully true this is. A few years ago, I allowed a man (a Catholic man, wonderful in many ways) ghost me, and then come back. I shouldn’t have allowed this first time. We went around the mulberry bush a few more times with the same pattern of behaviour- ghosting and me allowing him back. Each time we were back on, I was filled with anxiety about when he would just one day decide to disappear. Each time, I was more and more careful with my behaviour, less and less free, just to avoid a ghosting. It didn’t change the inevitable - he ended up ghosting me once and for all (well, it’s almost 3 years, so it’s been the longest stretch)... point is, when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

As long as the person who is setting the boundaries does it respectfully and calmly. I had a friend scold me big time when she didn’t appreciate my opinion. So then I started keeping my opinions and thoughts to myself, thinking that is what she wants. After many months had gone by, she then tells me that she is interested in my thoughts and opinions. So now, I try to avoid saying anything that I think is going to make her mad. It may not seem like it after reading this but other than that she is a good person and a good friend. I have just accepted this is just how our friendship is. I am fortunate to have several good friends that welcome my thoughts and opinions. Some great points made but you have to choose your battles and often bide your time. When we tolerate bad behaviour, we sometimes have to look at the greater good. It takes true wisdom to navigate around some people and sometimes turning a blind eye to an offense is the better course of action. Proverbs is full of wisdom about dealing with quick tempered fools. We have to always try to be wise, patient and discerning.

So true! Picking up grandson at preschool today, we wait in line outside, a twenty something mom allowed her 6 year old to pummel her and she just let him. He wanted her attention and she kept talking ignoring him. I had to turn away. Needless to say my grandchildren do not hit me, not after the first time.

How does one deal with adult children and grandchildren who should know what is right and wrong and do what they want anyway - I am talking prostitution to earn money, bisexual activity and promiscuity, drug addiction, no formal school since junior high ( Grade 7 ) - so many issues I can’t begin to name them all? They have all been brought in the Church, but only one out of 5 claims to be Catholic. Do you simply tolerate everything and do what you can? Without our help, 2 would be on the streets. I know you are discussing smaller matters, but I never know if what my husband and I tolerate can be changed. We are talking years of behaviour - with promises to change. Or do we continue to pray for them and be there for them? My daughter thinks prostitution is a valid occupation. My granddaughter claims bisexuality and lives accordingly. They both ( no surprise ) say they are “ spiritual “ but not religious. This has been discussed with priests and with them, so prayer is my hope. And not to cut them out of our lives.

Pj Smith, never give up hope and continue praying. Try your best to discern what God wills you to do in each family members situation. Don't act unless the way is clear and clearly from God. Pray and trust that God hears every one of your prayers (throughout all the many, many years) and is answering all of your prayers in the most loving and best way for each family member. Wait on the Lord and trust Him completely concerning your family. Be at peace. All is well. Remember, with God, nothing is impossible. Remain in God's peace. Trust God. This is what I have learned in my experience, I hope it helps.

I don't want to be like that. I made those boundaries for myself. I needed this video to remind me. Thank you, Father Mike. I'm going to write the behaviors down that I want to change in myself. The level of tolerance for each person varies according to different situations. For instance when I'm with family I am more intolerant with the little imperfections I see in the behaviour of my close ones because reconciling with family is easier. But when with the people I come across at work, I have no choice but to show more tolerance with them and so I behave accordingly. Even if some things that they do may not be proper or if it annoys me, I'll have to patiently bear with it because it is necessary to be in good relationships with them if you have to survive there and it will give a clearer vision about what your work looks like so that you can function more efficiently.

I have trouble setting boundaries and when I finally do, the two closest people in my life do not respect them anyway and I have a hard time with the confrontation that always comes about afterwards. This is true to a certain extent. But when people are powerless they don't always have the choice to not tolerate certain behaviors or abuse. For instance an elderly patient who has impaired mental capability can be abused or someone in a coma, vegetative state, an unborn child etc. There are varying degrees of power one has. That's why it is necessary for all of us to look after the vulnerable and keep close watch so that they are not abused or neglected. We need to not tolerate abuse of others who can't defend themselves.

Child of God as I was praying. God ministered to me in a revelation as I view your profile, to see things around you, I saw blessings but spiritual attacks holding onto them, in prayers, i saw a woman in the realm of the spirit monitoring and plotting delay in your life, with an evil mirror, with a motive to destroy. But as I speak to you now her time is up, for God immediate intervention in your life, Render a seed offering with Anything you can afford or give to the motherless, sow it to ( EGHOSA ORPHANAGE HOME ) in Edo state nigeria before 2DAYS with faith, as I Rise my hands towards heaven and pray for you they shall serve as point of contact wherever you are, you will receive double portion of grace to excel and total restoration of breakthrough in your life and in the life of your family. Ask for their acct details and help, call the MD in charge of the orphanage to get their details on WhatsApp or call them now on +2349046099547 Tell him I sent you. For it is not by might nor by power but of the spirit saith the lord (zechariah i4:6). You shall testify to the Glory of God in your life. God bless you

I set the rules for my daughter and she still lies. I cut off her money at college. Rules were explained and she opted to dishonor her parents. Will not tolerate disrespect:
