Why Lewis has won 92 F1 races - by Peter Windsor (1/2)

In his analysis of Lewis Hamilton's win in Portugal, Peter Windsor explains why Lewis was able to extract more from his Pirelli medium tyres than his Mercedes team-mate, Valtteri Bottas - and why this characteristic has been an intrinsic part of his record-breaking career. The first of Peter's two-part Portuguese GP review.

Now this comment may sound a bit harsh, and I do like this channel and genuinely enjoy most of these videos. But wasn't his whole theory and explanation here just oozing with smugness? As if Windsor here, at home, far away from the thousand experts and datastreams all working to add performance, as well as the firsthand experience from inside the car, as if Windsor has enough authortity on driving a Formula 1 car to literally lecture Bottas on what he's doing wrong? In addition to Windsor arrogantly thinking perhaps Bottas's "to whom it may concern, fuck you" message was actually directed at him and not for whom it was actually meant, the internet trolls who blast him as a little dog who laps up Lewis's scraps.

I believe Lewis' abilities are (still) terribly underrated. You don't often hear him speak of specific set up choices, and other technical aspects of tailoring and tweaking his car; he saves these discussions for his team. Lewis is a master of quiet deception - he certainly pulls off the appearance of being cool and nonchalant, but make no mistake, Lewis Hamilton is where he is because he has worked his butt off. @Desmond Griffith I really have a hard time with this point of view, it presumes that mankind has somehow regressed in the space of 70 years and so no driver today could drive those cars, of course they could, at its most fundamental, the core skills are exactly the same (there is no traction control in karting etc where they complete their apprenticeship) what has changed of course is the likely outcome of mistakes. Death was an ever present companion which thank god, or more accurately, Jackie Stewart is no longer the case. I contend that if Formula 1 returned to the cars of the 1950's (low grip allied to higher horsepower than tires could manage) contemporary drivers would initially be slower than the legends of old as they would no doubt be all too aware of the lack of seat belts etc but quickly times would drop as the other thing that is constant in humankind, competitiveness kicks in...

As ive said many times, it goes all the way back to his earliest years in karts, Lewis grew up driving with hand-me-down worn out tires given to him and his dad from other (more wealthier and well equipped) teams. And since he grew up with less he was forced to learn how to extract more, how to drive manage and win with bad tires. That was his rearing as a young driver. Growing up extracting more from less. what a better way to learn tire management. His advantage from early on was learning to win despite his car's disadvantages. SO in poor conditions, he always was far better than other drivers. Its rather a very simple concept, But its not one that they planned , it just one that their financial setbacks made possible. Never knowing the advantage they actually had from having less.

xevious2501. It's interesting that Lewis is always compared to Michael Schumacher, which I suppose is understandable, but not or rarely with any of the 'greats' from 'the old days'? I know everyone has a different view, so I'm not ashamed to make my comparison. Talking of Lewis' ability to go very fast and not rip the arse out of his tyres - or his transmission or engine or brakes - reminds me of my all time greatest racing driver (not just F1) and that is Jim Clark. I seem to remember Clark could do the same thing; preserve his tyres, engine, brakes and transmission. Every current driver who watches in car film of Jim Clark - at say the 'old' Spa - always wonders at how smooth he was. I actually remember watching him at various races - never F1 - and thinking he is actually a bit boring. So, in many ways, I think Lewis compares very favourably with my hero; Jim Clark. I know comparisons with drivers from the Clark era or before are a bit invidious, but one of my reasons for calling Clark the greatest, was his ability to do it in ANYTHING he was asked or allowed to drive. F1, F2, Saloon cars, Sports Racing cars even vintage cars. He once drove the ERA 'Remus' in a race (I think at Goodwood) faster than anyone had driven an ERA, ever. Lewis is similar. ALthough he doesn't t drive in anything else now, Lewis has driven NASCARs, BTCCs and many other performance cars and not just 'done well'. he has absolutely smashed it. Remember his lap in the Reasonably Priced Car'?

@@rogerwhittle2078 The greatness of a driver although relative to their day and age, the cars, the complexities difficulties are relative to their era. But still remains the larger picture. Past suffered from far worst conditions that today. never the less, those conditions were all they knew. Its not like their was better to be found somewhere else (unless an entirely different racing series) still. F1 in eras past has far few races, tracks were not as big. a season not as long. so even in that regard things were way different. Today cars are safer, but the physical demands on the drivers are beyond anything such drivers of the distant past could think of , let along the speed the precision, and duration of a season, and all teh races taking place. The conditioning of the physical body, and mental. so to each is own in regards to their era. Jackie Stewart came out his trap saying he believed lewis was not greater than drivers of era's prior, and its clear he even being a past steward has no idea of what these current drivers really go thru, because it all looks so easy. they make it look easy, but its not. Like any athelete, these people are simply greater than the average joe. they make it look easy.

It’s not one thing though, it’s every detail. Lewis knows he’s got a couple of tenths over Bottas and he knows exactly where on the lap he can nurse his tires to keep them in the optimal window whilst staying within 2 seconds, and just waits for Bottas’ tires to die. Combine that with his risk assessment to let Bottas and Sainz pass him in tricky conditions due to his overwhelming confidence he’ll retake the lead one conditions improve was just incredible to watch and process. I then remember watching him win in the wet at Silverstone by 1 minute 10 seconds while many of the other great drivers were pirouetting round the circuit. It changed how a lot of people viewed him. One more thing, I had the privilege to work for Louis Klemantaski a great motor racing photographer who triggered my interest in the sport, I asked him what he thought was the most important thing about motor racing and without hesitation he said tyres. For me, one statistic I think really matters is ratio of pole positions to race victories. For the seven drivers generally considered to be the greatest of all time, it looks like this More poles than wins 🇧🇷 Ayrton Senna: 1 pole for every 0.63 wins 🇬🇧 Jim Clark: 1 pole for every 0.76 wins 🇦🇷 Juan Manuel Fangio: 1 pole for every 0.83 wins 🇬🇧 Lewis Hamilton: 1 pole for every 0.95 wins More wins than poles 🇩🇪 Michael Schumacher: 1 win for every 0.75 poles 🇫🇷 Alain Prost: 1 win for every 0.65 poles 🇬🇧 Jackie Stewart: 1 win for every 0.63 poles This demonstrates that, while Senna and Clark were disproportionately good at qualifying, and while Stewart, Prost and Schumacher were disproportionately good in the races, Hamilton and to a lesser extent Fangio are the two most all-round great drivers of all time. They are the most consistent. Clark and Schumacher are next best all-rounders.

Hey Peter, one of my sons asked me that same question about Louis a couple years ago. “Dad why is Louis so good with that car.” This is how I explained it. Louis is an excellent communicator. He can talk to anyone anywhere, something not all drivers or athletes for that matter can do. Great communication starts with the ability to listen with awareness of what going on around you. So when people see his life style with different women and associating with people not from the industry he is learning how to adjust everything about himself to fit the circumstances. That being said, driving is much like being in a relationship. Racing is like being in a relationship with a crazy person. If you give the wrong input things can go bad quickly. When you muscle the car via the controls your luck wears thin you and your tires pay the price. Grip the wheel too tight and it’s like chocking the life out of your relationship. However, when your input is simply a pre planned suggestion and not a last second demand you are more apt to get what you need to be successful. I guarantee you that Louis holds the wheel loosely and gives pre planned suggestions rather than demands before cornering to keep the car flat. You might ask, do I race? No but I’ve have had a crazy Ex or two 😂 I have used that analogy to teach many Police Officers to enforcement ride.

Great description of Lewis Hamilton's talent IMO. Thank you PW. It has been mentioned before how Lewis evolves as the track evolves. He slowly takes in as much information about the track as he can and uses that info, when it counts, to put in pole laps and win races. As in any profession, there are going to be people who are exceptional at what they do. Not unlike MotoGP and Marc Marquez, in Formula 1 it happens to be Lewis Hamilton. Unfortunately there are always going to be sour grapes haters in this world as well. I don't know if Lewis Hamilton is the GOAT but he is on the list for sure and the greatest of our time. He is definitely a natural who has put in and continues to put in the work that it takes to be at the level he is at. He is also is part of a great team and is part of that team for a reason. Frankly I reckon that when Lewis wins the 7th title that puts him out there by himself. I have never counted Schumacher's '94 win as a true win as he had that brain fade to which he was susceptible and took Damon Hill out. Schumacher should have been disqualified and penalised because of that, but Williams for whatever reason didn't want to protest. Then when he did it again by driving into Villeneuve (though Villeneuve survived), what happened? They cancelled all his points scored and he finished last! Also apparently, Schumacher's car had a problem and wasn't expected to finish the race, so absolutely parallel situation to '94, so 6 WDC wins only (and 2 WDC wins to Hill)! So right now that puts Hamilton as the equivalent WDC GOAT, and with 7 wins he'll be out by himself!

Pretty sure if Daniel Ricardo for example was by chance in Lewis seat for these dominant years he would be the one looking at a bucket full of championships .
