Why lakes and rivers should have the same rights as humans | Kelsey Leonard

Visit TED.com to get our entire library of TED Talks, transcripts, translations, personalized Talk recommendations and more.
Water is essential to life. Yet in the eyes of the law, it remains largely unprotected -- leaving many communities without access to safe drinking water, says legal scholar Kelsey Leonard. In this powerful talk, she shows why granting lakes and rivers legal "personhood" -- giving them the same legal rights as humans -- is the first step to protecting our bodies of water and fundamentally transforming how we value this vital resource.

I watch many TED and KZread videos yet I still get surprised sometimes when I see how many people dislike a video. Just because we still have human rights violations (Native Americans know that better than most), that doesn't mean we should not approve of something like this. We need deep changes in our society, and the way of living. All of that requires a shift in our habits and thoughts. The amount of people disliking this video says that we're not ready for that yet. How sad...

Never forget African Egyptians were the first to have slaves called the Israelites. Slavery was invented in Africa. Africans invented slavery. More money = more problems, more responsibility. What’s sad is the flood of globalization from England and Africa has polluted the water 💦 Blacks/whites/blacks/whites/blacks/whites it’s a chess game. The old Greek pathos to persuade by emotions. Greek is just a row boat distance away from Africa. Stop being polluted by pathological stories about poor African slaves. Don’t buy it. Don’t get polluted. Remember, protect and preserve your indigenous culture, heritage, language, food, land. North American region is the promised land and pathological lies about slavery is the pollution.

Incorrect. Rights are not packaged with responsibility. If we confer more and more rights of personhood onto animals with greater sentience, like say an orca or dog, does this mean we can haul in a killer whale into court because it damaged our boat? Yeah. That's not how rights work, bud.

I do not own a kidding. Jokes aside. That's not how rights of personhood works. More and more, animals are gaining rights of persons, which gives them more and more protection. Has conferring rights onto animals somehow made parrots vulnerable to SLAPP suits? Or crows to laws against theft? Conferring legal personhood onto an entity means certain laws on treatment apply; your suits talking point is a "hilarious" non sequitur that doesn't.

yes I would. the problem is too much capitalism not the lack of this superstitious nonsense. she even mentions corporate personhood as a justification, there's your problem. at the very least companies should be forced to give workers half the board seats, like in germany. strengthen the EPA, overturn theocratic rulings like the hobby lobby case which she also mentioned. all water sources should be publicly owned, no more private property.

Like you I disagree with the attempt to make water have the status of "Personhood". However there is NO NEED to attack the speaker because she is using eloquent words emphasize the water issue. The essence of her point is... 1) Maintain clean water for all the people around the world to enjoy. 2) Make clean water accessible for all people. 3) To not be wasteful of "high quality" water and to not take it for granted. The point of her talk is to direct the attention towards manufacturing companies, steel mils and many other production companies that commit waste disposal malpractices. Finally she point towards people IMPLICITLY when they go to a beach or camp by a lake and they are contaminating the lakes by leaving trash on the floor.

I tried, I really tried to watch this with an open mind. With TED being the TED I respect, I thought it was going to talk metaphorically about human rights for water, as in how we should respect this precious resource like we respect our fellow man. But when I hear "...water is alive, it can hear, it holds memories, so I brought a water vessel up with me today because I want it to hold the memories of our conversation", how can I take this seriously? This is straight up Phoebe Buffay thinking that her mum is alive and well living in the form of a stray cat. Had to stop at the 3 minute mark as I felt that both my IQ and my respect for TED was declining with every minute I was watching this video.

While i disagree with some of the things said - like having a vessel of water on the podium to keep the memories - many things that she said were correct. Water should have the right to non-exploitation. It should be illegal to just put whatever pollutants into water that you want. And YES, it should be very illegal that Nestle is starting to buy rivers and bodies of water to have exclusive rights. This is not okay. Water is the single most important thing for life on earth. We need to realize this and stop polluting it and make clean water for everyone one of the Top priorities in fighting the climate crisis.

THAT's my FAVORIT subject!!! 😘 - THANK YOU!!! 💗 And it is a linguistic subject too - I think.. - we have a.. notion (in Russian for ex.) - 'Living' and 'inanimate' (/'un-living'.. ) Nature... - when it is a nonsense: all Nature can be only 'living'.. So, all the living 'things' - (it is also a wrong expression(( - not 'things', but... 'essencies' .. /'entities' .. - 'natures'.. - Should have equal rights for defence of their existence and.. a well-being .. ✌️💗🌞🌈🌊🌱💚💕🙏

P.S. - I said 'linguistic' - I did mean a matter of the MINDSET indeed... So, mindset - is first.. But changes in linguistics when we 'talk' about Nature are necessary - the way we talk - is subconscious, but it influences our conscious way of thinking much... - I think this could be the 'turning' point... 🙏🌈💦🌱💚🌍💗

@@jetstream222 My point is you can have protections that actually make sense. It's not a useles sentiment to not want to legitimize corporate personhood and religious lunacy. Also things were never optimal and nature wasn't respected we just didn't have the ability to exploit it at this scale.

  • @jetstream222

Shway The odds of successfully stripping away corporate personhood at any level as opposed to dragging well-founded concerns into the light of modernity makes any dangers of possible “legitimization” a fundamentally moot point. Taking our society’s past and current ecological track-record into account. Harkening back to a time when the innocuous local river held the same essential permanence and recognizability as the McDonald’s logo, or any legally respected entity, may just impart the modicum of “religious fanaticism”, held by the like of Apple vs Android fanboys, necessary to address an increasingly important and pressing issue. So unless you’re great-grandchildren can afford a SpaceX ticket to Mars my point is that one supports billions of years of needful biodiversity and the other drives profit. Otherwise, my bad, and tell them to sell their property near the coastlines.

The heavens and the earth will pass away but the words of Jesus WILL NEVER PASS AWAY and MOST unbelieving humans will not be in eternity enjoying our inheritance of the NEW EARTH with JESUS ruling and reigning. He's coming as a THIEF in the night and taking His faithful few OUT with His light for a season and DARKNESS will flood the earth. That time is almost here. JESUS said BE READY. The Bride makes herself ready, watching and praying always that she may be accounted worthy TO ESCAPE (Luke 21:36), as did Noah and the rest of the EIGHT total people who were saved. Jesus said FEW there are who will be saved! Thankfully, there will be more than 8 this time, but the question is-- will you be among them?
