Why it's probably a Mistake to Scrap Out Heavy Duty Vintage Washing Machines for Scrap Metal Cash!

The time has come to do some scrapping and deal with these heavy duty old washing machines that have been following me around for years! I was thinking they would be pretty good value to scrap out - but after this little adventure, I have changed my mind!!

Acetylene torch, using propane instead of Acetylene for a cost savings. I don't care what fastener it is, it's coming off

I agree with others. Retrieve the motor and wiring and the rest as scrap steel. I would of spent the time you took retrieving the barrels cutting the windings out of the 6 motors. I wouldn't of pursued the barrels to sell as separate items, but that is an independent decision. Great breakdown explanation and tips included. Have a tremendous week ahead.

Thanks Brad. Yeah, I did have plans to rescue some copper windings but I don't have time for that now. 1200kg of motors went to the yard today!

Hi Chris, an enjoyable and informative scrap out. If you can sell the barrels as fire pits that's good, but otherwise I agree, too much work to strip down. 👍

That was a lot of work, and like you say if there is no sale or use for the tubs, no point. Motor and wires only.

Fascinating subject. The note pad showing the numbers is key!. In my area(s) there are people advertise they have free scrap metal. They lure us in trying to convince us that their heavy appliances stuck in a horror movie basement are worth nearly the price of gold. On a good day, if you already have scrap in your yard, it normally isn't worth the time to scrap out. Scrap is easy to spot, but unless people sell bits, or melt parts down....it is too tough of a job vs other opportunities.

Agreed, especially with basic steel junk! It's also extremely important to avoid those horror movie basements at all costs! 😱😆

You reminded me when I was decided to scrap as much as washing machines as possible but the household ones. In NZ the Fisher & Paykel is the dominant brand and the outer barrel is made of plastic which presented the challenge of what to do with it. On the flip side I've managed to sell several shafts and shafts and rotor sets as wells as the lids (one lady lost the lid on the moving between houses). And I bought a tin sniper to cut the cases as I have a 98 Impreza to curry the scrap LOL so when I saw you jumping I was like "I did the same!!". I still I feel like collecting a few parting them out as I see people getting rid of them just because the one wing of the agitator broke or the balance switch is rusty.

Yeah, there is certainly good money in parting them out for sure! The trouble with washing machines is that they accumulate very quickly and can take over a yard in no time! 😱😆

Great Vid Chris! Agree with your assessment. Also, every time I scrap down a big appliance I hurt my hands. Not having a cut on my hands or arm is easily worth $100! I say, snip the power cord and keep moving.

@@TheUltimateRecycler Yes!...I've pulled up a lawn chair and already have my feet up waiting for the next show to start. Speaking of waiting...I'm having one of those big lounge chairs delivered so I can keep up with your videos. If you see the delivery truck, just have them set it anywhere. I'll unwrap it when I get back with more pizza.

I would be tempted to use the inner and outer tubs together as a fire pit, and the inner tub would become full of ashes it could be removed and dumped, then reinserted into the outer “sleeve” also would provide good airflow for the inner in to hive some separation between the layers.

Do you come across any mercury switches on any of the appliances you scrap out, and what do you do with them. Here in Minnesota, all mercury switches have to be removed from the appliance before scraping.
